Components
- 24 cards
- Back: Actions
- Front: Photographs
- 20 animal tokens
Setup
The oldest player, the first guide, prepares the game:
A. They shuffle the cards and place the deck within everyone's reach.
B. They place the game box in front of them and put the animal tokens inside.
C. Except for 7 or 8 tokens that they will leave in the box, they throw the rest onto the table in front of the players, making sure they don't overlap and that there is at least one of each type.
How to Play
- The guide draws the top card from the deck and looks at the pictured animal (lynx, deer, wolf, owl, or turtle).
- They announce aloud the action indicated on the back of the top card of the deck. This is the action they will perform. They give the players a few seconds to observe the animals, then ask them to close their eyes.
- With the players' eyes closed, the guide performs the action on one of the tokens representing the animal on their card.
- They tell everyone to open their eyes and, going clockwise, starting with the player to their left, one by one, each player must point to the token they think has been moved. For the disappear action, they must name the animal that has disappeared.
- As soon as a player gives a correct answer, they take the Photo card and begin creating their album by placing it in front of them.
- If no one guesses correctly, the guide keeps the card for their own album. They show the card along with the token that has been moved.
- Finally, the guide passes the box with the tokens to the player to their left, who begins a new turn as the new guide.
The Actions
Here are the 4 actions and the responses players must give:
| Action | Move | Mutate | Appear | Disappear |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guide action | Move a token at least 3 fingers | Flip a token | Place a token from the box onto the table | Put a token from the table back into the box |
| Response | Show the token | Show the token | Show the token | Name the animal |
The Famous Bear
The animals get very excited when the Famous Bear appears!
- The guide must collect all the tokens placed on the table and put them back in the box with the others.
- As at the beginning, they will shuffle them and drop them onto the table, except for 7 or 8 that they will leave in the box.
- They will also set aside the Famous Bear card.
- Then they will play their turn normally.
End of Game and Winner
The Photo Safari ends when the draw pile is empty.
The player with the most photos in their album wins the game.
Everyone Wants a Photo of the Famous Bear
In this variant, when the Famous Bear appears on top of the drawing pile:
- The guide keeps the card until the end of the turn.
- As in a normal turn:
- They collect all the tokens.
- They drop them onto the table (except for 7 or 8).
- They announce the action aloud and ask the players to close their eyes.
- They perform the indicated action on the photographed animal.
- When asked to open their eyes, everyone plays simultaneously. As quickly as possible, each player points to a single token or announces the name of the missing animal aloud if the action is Disappear. You cannot point to the same token as another player.
- The first player to point to the correct token or announce the name of the missing animal collects both photos: the one of the animal and the one of the Famous Bear. If no one guesses correctly, the guide adds both photos to their album.
What if the guide cannot perform the action? They must discard the card and draw the next one.
Animal Tokens
The animal tokens depict: Athene noctua (little owl), Canis lupus (wolf), Cervus elaphus (red deer), Lynx, Testudo hermanni (Hermann's tortoise), and Ursus arctos (brown bear — the Famous Bear).
