Spielziel (Goal)

Each of you starts the game with twelve Phasenkärtchen. Whenever you can lay out cards showing four identical animals, colours or things, you may turn over the matching Phasenkärtchen.

The first player to turn over their tenth Phasenkärtchen is the winner.

Spielmaterial (Game Contents)

55 playing cards:

  • 48 cards (each with four different animals, colours and things)
  • 7 Jokers (= stars)

4 Phasenkärtchen sheets (Stanztafeln, punch sheets):

  • each with 12 Phasenkärtchen in one colour

Spielvorbereitung (Setup)

Shuffle all 55 playing cards and place them face down in the middle of the table as a stack. This is the draw pile (Nachziehstapel). Turn the top card face up beside it; this is the first card of the discard pile (Ablagestapel).

Each of you receives:

  • 4 cards from the draw pile, held so that the other players cannot see them;
  • 12 Phasenkärtchen of one back colour. Lay these out face up in front of you, sorted by the three categories "Tiere" (animals), "Farben" (colours) and "Dinge" (things).

If you are fewer than four players, the surplus Phasenkärtchen stay in the box.

Spielverlauf (Course of Play)

The youngest player begins; play then continues clockwise.

When it is your turn, first take one new card. It may be either the top card of the face-down draw pile or the top card of the face-up discard pile. You now hold 5 cards.

You may then lay out exactly 4 of these 5 cards face up in front of you, if with them you can fulfil one of your Phasenkärtchen. How this works is explained in more detail under "Die Phasenkärtchen" below.

As the last action of your turn you must place one card face up on the discard pile. You must do this always, even if you have just fulfilled a Phasenkärtchen!

Then the next player clockwise takes their turn. They too take a card, may then fulfil a Phasenkärtchen if they can, and must finally place a card on the discard pile. And so on.

Die Phasenkärtchen (The Phase Cards)

Each player has the same 12 Phasenkärtchen:

  • once each of the 4 animals;
  • once each of the 4 colours;
  • once each of the 4 things.

If, after taking your 5th card, you can lay out 4 cards with the same symbol (or Jokers; see below) in front of you, you may then turn over the matching Phasenkärtchen; it is now fulfilled. The 4 cards must always all be laid out at once.

Example: Laura may turn over her "Rot" (red) Phasenkärtchen if she lays out exactly 4 cards that show a red paint splash. The other symbols (animals or things) on these 4 cards are meaningless in this case.

Push these 4 cards face up under the discard pile. Place your 5th card on top of the discard pile. Then take 4 new cards from the face-down draw pile. The next player's turn comes.

Hinweis 1 (Note 1)

As soon as the draw pile is empty, take all cards of the discard pile except the top card, which stays face up as the first card of the discard pile. Shuffle the remaining cards and prepare them as the new face-down draw pile.

Hinweis 2 (Note 2)

You cannot fulfil a Phasenkärtchen that has already been turned over. So, when collecting your cards, always pay attention to the symbols, so that you still need them for your remaining Phasenkärtchen.

Joker

The star (= Joker) can replace any animal, any colour or any thing. A player may use as many stars as they like (even 4 of them) to fulfil one Phasenkärtchen.

Example: With the cards shown, Sarah could fulfil either her "Hase" (hare) Phasenkärtchen or her "Geschenk" (gift) Phasenkärtchen by laying out the corresponding 4 cards in front of herself.

Spielende (End of the Game)

In this way you play in turn until one player has fulfilled and turned over their tenth Phasenkärtchen. The game then ends and this player is the winner.

Variante für jüngere Kinder (Variant for Younger Children)

If you are still very young, you may agree before the start of the game that each player holds only 3 (instead of 4) hand cards. In this case a Phasenkärtchen is fulfilled as soon as you lay out 3 identical symbols.

You can also combine both forms of play: older children and adults play with 4 hand cards each and must then lay out 4 identical symbols to fulfil a Phasenkärtchen; the younger players play with only 3 cards and 3 identical symbols.
