- 1 Sea board
- 30 Ice Chunk tiles: 18 Snowy tiles, 6 Sea lion tiles, 6 Frosty tiles
- 12 Sea lion tokens (6 small Sea lions and 6 large Sea lions)
- 4 Wooden Penguins
- 1 cloth bag
Object of the Game
Play cooperatively to get 4 penguins to hop along connecting Ice Chunks to the iceberg before all the Ice Chunks tiles have been played.
Happy Penguins Mode
In this game mode, Sea lions on Ice Chunk tiles do not have any effect. They are peacefully resting while the penguins are having fun. You will not need the 12 Sea lion tokens.
Setup
- Take the Sea Board, 30 Ice Chunk tiles, the bag and the 4 penguins from the game box.
- Place the box in the center of the table with the Sea Board placed on top of it.
- Take 9 random Snowy tiles:
- First, place 4 of these tiles in a row on the Sea Board. They must be placed as far as possible from the iceberg bridge.
- Place the 5 other tiles on the remaining space on the Sea board.
- Tiles must not touch each other and must not be hidden or partially hidden by the iceberg bridge.
- Put all remaining Ice Chunk tiles in the bag and place the bag next to the Sea board.
- Place the 4 penguins on the Ice Chunk tiles furthest from the iceberg bridge (1 penguin per tile).
TIP: Do not place penguins too close to the edge of ice chunks or they will fall too easily!
The player who does the best impression of a penguin will play first, then the game moves clockwise. If you are playing a solo game, you can use these multiplayer game rules.
How to Play
On your turn, you must carry out the following actions in order:
A. Draw a tile (mandatory)
Draw an Ice Chunk tile from the bag (without peeking!).
B. Slide the tile on the Sea board (mandatory)
Choose one of the two sides of the iceberg bridge and slide your tile under, then push it slowly until no part is sticking out. Important: Once you choose where to slide this tile you cannot move it to another starting point.
When a new ice chunk is slid onto the board, other ice chunks may be pushed back out of the board from underneath the Iceberg bridge. Just finish pushing your new ice chunk under the Iceberg bridge then push the other ice chunk tiles under the bridge, back onto the Sea board. Ice chunks should never stick out of the box from under the Iceberg bridge.
When Ice Chunk tiles stick out, then fall off the other 3 sides of the board, leave them on the table for the remainder of the game.
Tumbling Penguins
During your turn, a penguin may fall off the Sea board when your new Ice Chunk is slid onto the board. Finish pushing the Ice Chunk tile in until no part is sticking out. Place the fallen penguin on one of the free Ice Chunk tiles that is the furthest from the iceberg bridge. If this happens, your turn is over and you cannot move a penguin. It is the next player's turn.
No cheating! You cannot touch any tiles on the Sea board. Tiles can only move by being pushed by other tiles.
C. Move a penguin (optional)
If you want, you can move a penguin to bring them closer to the iceberg.
- A penguin can hop from their Ice Chunk tile to one next to them. These 2 tiles must be touching.
- You can only move one penguin per turn.
- There can only be one penguin per tile.
If you move a penguin onto a tile that is partly covered by the iceberg, you can move that penguin straight to the iceberg. This penguin has made it back before dark!
Note: Sometimes when hopping onto a new tile, the tile a penguin was on might fall off the Sea board. If this happens, place the penguin on their new tile and leave the fallen tile on the table.
IMPORTANT: Just like in the Setup, the position of penguins on ice chunks is important to keep them from falling later on when the tiles are pushed. Think carefully before placing a penguin on a new tile as you will not be able to move it until the next turn.
If you cannot move a penguin or do not want to then your turn is over.
D. Slide (optional)
When a penguin hops to a Frosty tile, they can slide and move forward one extra tile as long as the two tiles are touching.
Successive slides are possible if multiple Frosty tiles are touching each other.
Careful! There can only be one penguin per ice chunk! This means that if a penguin wants to slide, they can only slide onto an ice chunk without a penguin already on it!
Once all the actions have been completed, it is the next player's turn.
End of the Game
The game can end in 2 ways:
- The 4 penguins reach the iceberg: Congratulations! You have worked well together to win the game!
Or,
- The Ice Chunk tile bag is empty but there are still penguins on the ice chunks: Oh dear! You did not succeed this time and you have lost the game.
Try your luck again and see if you can get all the penguins to the iceberg before nightfall!
Sea Lions Adventure Mode
This game mode is played in the same way as the Happy Penguins Mode, but this time Sea lions will get in the way of your mission!
During Setup, take the 12 Sea lion tokens from the box and group them by size. Place them near all the players.
During the game, each time a penguin hops onto a Sea lion tile, take the matching Sea lion token and slide it on the Sea board the same way as the new Ice Chunks tiles. If all the Sea lion tokens have been used, you can collect the Sea lion tokens that have fallen from the box.
Blocked
When a Sea lion is blocking 2 ice chunks from connecting, as illustrated in the example below, penguins cannot hop from their ice chunk to the other since they are not touching.
