Setup
- Open the Recipe Book to the scenario you want to play. We recommend starting with Recipe #1, and then moving on to the next recipe once you've won.
- Place the Market and Storage board to the left of the Recipe Book and place the Market token on the 'Start' space on the board.
- Shuffle the Customer cards into a single, face-down deck. Place this to the right of the Recipe Book. During the game, you'll draw from this deck and place the cards on the area above the Recipe Book. Leave this area free, so you can add Customer cards during the game.
- Shuffle the Equipment Breakdown cards into a single, face-down deck. Place these to the right of the Customer cards.
- Shuffle the Employee cards into a single, face-down deck. Place these to the right of the Equipment Breakdown cards. Then, draw 3 Employee cards to show a face-up display.
- Flip the box lid upside down and place the Pastry sheets inside.
- Place the Action tokens in a general supply pile.
- Place the Money tokens in a general supply pile.
- Place the Round marker on the round 1 space.
- Then, refer to the scenario specific setup instructions. They will explain in detail:
- Starting Money - Take it from the general supply and place it in your personal supply.
- Starting ingredients (Action Tokens) - Place these in the storage area of the Market and Storage Board.
- Victory Conditions for Standard and Gourmet Special Scenario.
- Any scenario specific rules, which will also explain if the Objective token is needed.
Gameplay Overview
Each game takes place over a series of rounds, usually between 4 and 7 (each scenario indicates the number of rounds). Each round includes the following phases and steps:
Phase 1 - Preparation
- 1.a Employees Come or Go - Based on the day's Schedule Notes.
- 1.b Prepare Ingredients - Take Action tokens from storage and earn from this week's employees.
- 1.c Equipment Check - Based on the round details.
- 1.d Increase Market Share - (Optional) You may spend to increase the Market Level.
Phase 2 - Opening Time
- 2.a Customers Arrive - Based on the Market Level.
- 2.b Make the Recipe & Serve Customers - Respond to customer demands and prepare the recipe as described at the foot of the page in the Recipe Book.
Phase 3 - Closing Time
- 3.a Check Customers & Update Market - Based on how many satisfied customers were served.
- 3.b Pay Employees - Pay wages to your employees.
- 3.c Repair Equipment - (Optional) To reduce risk of breakdowns.
- 3.d End of Day - The round ends, and you move the Round marker one space to the right.
These phases will repeat each round until the last round is played. At that point, you will check your victory conditions to see if you won the game!
If you are required to make a payment you cannot afford at any point, your business must close, and you lose the game. This may happen when you have to pay employees, you incur extra costs from equipment failures, or a scenario specific cost.
Phase 1 - Preparation
The steps in this phase happen before your business opens for the day. You always show up early to make sure your shop is ready for success!
Step 1.a - Employees Come or Go
Check your Schedule Notes to see if any employees are added or removed on the different days.
- Add an employee. Select 1 employee from the face-up display, or you may draw blindly from the top of the deck. If you draw from the face-up display, then replace that card with another card from the deck. If there are multiple 'Add an Employee' icons, you resolve them one at a time. Place them in your personal area to show they are active.
- Remove an employee. Select 1 of the employees that are active, and place them underneath the deck. You can no longer use their abilities.
Employees will stay with you the whole week, unless they are removed by the Remove Employee icon.
Employees provide two benefits: they help you gain Action tokens each round, and they grant an ongoing effect which may trigger at different moments during the round (as indicated by the icon). However, they must also be paid a wage at the end of each round.
Each employee card shows: Name and Wage; Ongoing Special ability and icon indicating when it triggers; Tokens collected.
Card effects are triggered at these times:
- During Prepare Ingredients
- During End of Day
- During Customers Arrive
- During Make the Recipe & Serve Customers
- During Check Customers & Update Market
In this example, Day 1 has two employees added. It will be very common to have multiple employees start on the first day. There are no changes on Day 2. On Day 3 you will remove one of your employees, and then add another employee.
Step 1.b - Prepare Ingredients
Collect Action tokens from storage and employees. There will be Action tokens in the storage area, either because of setup, or choices from the previous round. Take them from the storage area and add them to your personal supply.
Then look for Action token icons on your employee cards. For each icon, add the corresponding tokens to your personal supply.
In this example, you will gain a size 2 token from this employee.
Step 1.c - Equipment Check
When you see an Equipment Check icon in the Schedule Notes, you must check for an Equipment Breakdown. To do this, draw one Equipment Breakdown card from the deck for each icon and add them to your personal area. Draw cards one at a time. There are 2 cards for each piece of equipment. When you draw the card, you check for matches:
- If the equipment card does not match one that has already been drawn, then do nothing. Simply add the card to your personal area.
- If the equipment card matches one that has already been drawn, then this machine breaks down!
Equipment Breakdown
If a piece of equipment breaks down, then you must resolve the breakdown effect on the card. This is resolved instantly. You cannot pay to repair a broken down piece of equipment.
The breakdown effect is triggered when the same piece of equipment is drawn a second time. The breakdown effect is only resolved once, even though two cards are drawn to trigger the effect. After the breakdown effect is resolved, then discard both cards.
In this example, you have two equipment cards drawn. A third is drawn, which matches the Proofing Cabinet, and means the breakdown effect is triggered on the Proofing Cabinet.
During the Closing Time Phase, you will have the option of repairing any pieces of equipment that haven't broken down yet, gaining you instant benefits. You will find more details about this later on in 'Step 3.c Repair Equipment'.
Step 1.d - Increase Market Share (Optional)
You may optionally spend money to increase your market level. You may update this as many times as you like during this step. This will increase how many customers arrive each day, starting today.
Moving the Market token forward one space costs the amount shown on the next step. If you want to increase it multiple levels, you must pay the cost for each step.
Moving the token forward two spaces will cost 2 money (1 + 1).
Be careful! If you have more customers arriving than you can serve, then you risk losing the market share you just paid for! Invest wisely.
Later, Step 3.a (Check Customers & Market) will describe how you can lose market levels.
Note: Remember you may increase your market share level on your first day, if you wish.
Phase 2 - Opening Time
The steps in this phase happen once your doors open for the day. It's time for you to sell pastries to your arriving customers!
Step 2.a - Customers Arrive
As the day starts, your customers will arrive first thing in the morning and line up outside the window! Check the current market level on the Market & Storage board and take the corresponding number of customers from the deck. Place them in a face-down pile on top of the Recipe Book. These are all the customers that will come today.
Then, deal 3 cards from this deck and place them face-up in a row. Those will be the first customers that you can serve.
The current market level shows how many Customers will be dealt into the face-down deck. Each customer card shows a customer order and reward options. As described in Step 2.b, you will be able to select one.
Step 2.b - Make the Recipe & Serve Customers
During this step, you will create the recipe, place Action tokens, and serve customers. This will be the core part of each day!
The instructions for each recipe are at the foot of the page in the Recipe Book. The recipe will be broken down into the following steps:
- Fold the pastry sheet.
- Place Action tokens to fill customer orders.
In most recipes, you will do these steps several times. Each recipe is different, so be sure to follow the directions closely!
Pastry Step 1 - Fold the Pastry Sheet
First note if this step requires you to use a timer. If a timer is needed, before you start folding you must start the timer. With the timer running, you must complete this step within that time.
Not all recipes require the timer, and the timer is only for this step.
Note for the Shop Owner: Set your phone timer to 30 seconds. You must move quickly to satisfy your customers! However, if that time is too stressful and dampens your enjoyment of the game, then you may set the timer for 45 seconds or 1 minute, or longer. You are now the boss of the pastry shop, so you may decide to 'wake up earlier' and allow for more time!
The recipe will tell you if you need to use a new pastry sheet, or if you should fold one that you are already using.
If this is the first step of the round, it will be a new pastry sheet. Later in the round, you may fold a pastry sheet you previously used.
Each symbol on a pastry sheet corresponds to a type of flavor. There are five types of flavor: Salty, Savory, Tart, Sweet, and Spicy. Every Pastry Sheet has a 5x5 grid of icons on either side.
Now to fold the pastry! The recipe will have a diagram and a text description of how to fold the pastry sheet.
Each recipe will be different, but we can review some common types of folding. In some cases you are required to make more precise folds: your initial fold and the result must match what is in the diagram. To make this fold, you must first fold over a row from the edge, and then a row from the opposite edge. In other cases you may fold the pastry sheet in any way you wish, as long as the end result matches the required grid size.
After you have completed the folding, this step ends. If the time runs out before you finish, you must finish the fold as quickly as possible and end the step.
Pastry Step 2 - Place Action Tokens to Fill Customer Orders
After you complete the folding, you must place Action tokens to fill the customer's orders.
Each customer in line outside of your pastry shop will have an order that needs to be filled.
To meet these orders, you must place Action tokens on matching icons on your folded pastry.
Action tokens have different sizes, and may cover one, two, three or even four icons at the same time. For example, a strawberry token can be placed on a single space, and other tokens can cover 4 spaces each with unique shapes.
You will use the Action tokens you currently have in your personal supply. You cannot take tokens from your Storage board! Place them on the folded pastry, and when the customer's order is filled you will collect the rewards.
These are the rules for placing tokens:
- Action tokens cannot go beyond the edge of a pastry.
- If the pastry is folded in a way that only half the icon is visible, then you cannot place a token on it. (This will only be relevant for certain scenarios and only those scenarios will allow a fold that shows half-icons.)
- Action tokens cannot be placed on top of, or overlap other Action tokens. They may only be placed right on top of the pastry sheet.
- It is possible for Action tokens to be covered by the pastry sheet when completing a recipe, and if that happens an Action token may be placed on top. The main requirement is that a token must be placed on the pastry sheet itself.
- If you have multiple pastries with visible icons, you may still place Action tokens on them. In this way, you can place tokens on multiple pastries to fill a customer order.
Remember that actions are performed after folding. You may place as many tokens and fill as many customer orders as you wish.
Important: Special Action Tokens
- Strawberry: covers one Pastry icon.
- Raspberry: covers one Pastry icon, but counts as two of that icon.
- Blueberry: covers one Pastry icon, but counts as three of that icon.
For example, one Raspberry Special Action token on a Tart space is enough to fill a customer's order requiring two Tart icons.
When you place tokens to fill a customer order, you then receive one of the rewards at the bottom of the card, which is either money or tokens.
The money is added to your pile of earnings. The tokens are taken from the general supply, and is placed on the Storage board. Action Tokens gained from customers are not placed into your personal supply and cannot be used this day.
Remember you may only select one of the rewards! Then, place the customer aside in a discard pile so they are not confused with the active customers.
The tokens are limited by the supply. If there is no token of that shape left in the general supply, then you must take the money reward instead.
You may fill more than one customer order at a time when placing tokens. This may be useful when using larger tokens, because you can use some icons for one order and others for another. However, you cannot 'save' some icons to use later with new customers.
You must use icons immediately to fill one or more orders from customers that are already in the queue.
For example, with one placement the player places an 'L' shaped token to gain two Salty icons and a Sweet icon. They can use one of the Salty icons and the Sweet one to fill a first order, and then place a Strawberry to earn a Tart and fill a second order (using the left over Sweet icon from the 'L' piece).
In this step, you may place as many tokens as you wish. You will probably have tokens left over to use in future pastry steps.
After a customer is satisfied (and discarded) then you replace them with another customer from the day's deck. If this deck runs out, then the customer is not replaced.
Important: As we said, you can't save icons to use later with new customers. So if you draw new customers to replace the ones you discarded (or if you grab a new pastry sheet) you lose any unused covered icons!
Further Pastry Steps
You follow the recipe steps from left to right, which means you may end up repeating steps 1) folding and 2) placing Action tokens several times. Move to the next step when you wish to. This is usually when you have run out of space to place Action tokens on the current pastry and need more.
When you do this, you may end up with several pastries. For example, the next set of steps may have you grabbing a new pastry sheet while the other one is still in play.
Important: As you continue to play the round, you will be able place Action tokens and fill customer orders by using any of the pastries or a combination of icons on any one.
Remember: Although you may place Action tokens on multiple sheets to satisfy one or more customer, the moment you choose to take out a new sheet (or refresh the customer line) you lose any unused covered icons.
If at any point you run out of Action tokens to place, your round ends after you fill all possible customer orders.
You may not master the art of baking (or folding) in your first few attempts... and that's okay! With a little more experience and by increasing your market share, you'll soon be able to make the most of every recipe you come across.
After all pastry recipe steps are complete, or you have run out of tokens or customers, then this phase ends and you move to Phase 3.
Leave any remaining customers that were not served face up or in the deck.
Phase 3 - Closing Time
The steps in this phase happen after you have served your last customer for the day. It's time to close up shop, pay your employees, and get some rest before the next day!
Step 3.a - Check Customers & Update Market
If any customers remain in the deck of the day or the face-up display without being served, count them up. You lose 1 market level for each of these unserved customers.
Note: Your market level cannot fall below the 'Start' space.
The discarded satisfied customers and any customers left face-up or in the deck are all shuffled together and placed at the bottom of the main customer deck.
Step 3.b - Pay Employees
Each one of your employees has a wage. You must now pay the total of all their wages.
If you cannot pay, you lose!
Step 3.c - Repair Equipment (Optional)
You may now repair some of your equipment that is in danger of breaking down. Each card has a repair cost to it.
If you chose to repair it, remove the card from the game and gain the benefit for repairing it. That piece of equipment can no longer break down.
Note: You may, if you find it useful, repair a piece of equipment even if its matching card has already been repaired. Sometimes it is helpful to activate the special ability again by doing this.
Step 3.d - End of Day
Move the Round marker one space forward. If this is the last space on the round track, then the game ends and you should check your victory conditions! Then, clean up your personal area:
- Return any tokens on your pastry sheets to the general supply.
- Return the pastry sheets to the box lid in a random order. Ideally, when you draw a pastry sheet from the box lid you should not know which one it is.
- Any remaining tokens in your personal area are discarded to the general supply as well. They are not moved to the storage area.
If this is not the final round, you then start the next day using the same phases and steps.
End of the Game
After you have finished your last round, it is time to determine whether you have won!
If at any point during the game you failed to pay a penalty, then you lose the game. Otherwise, refer to the winning conditions to determine if you won the game.
Each scenario in the Recipe Book will have a specific victory requirement. Most often you will be required to earn a certain amount of money. However, the requirement may also be the number of customers, or using icons in unique ways.
Each scenario will also have requirements for a Gourmet Victory. This level is harder to achieve, but is worth striving for as you continue to explore the game! Note that there is both a Standard and a Gourmet Victory. After you win a Standard Victory, try to earn the Gourmet victory!
Additional Scenarios
There are many other scenarios to discover in the Recipe Book. We suggest exploring the recipes in the order they are presented, moving on to the next recipe once you have successfully completed the previous one.
In general, the difficulty of the scenarios increases from the first recipe to the last. However, it's your Recipe Book, and like all cookbooks, you can explore it at your leisure.
Example Round
You are starting the first day of Recipe #2, in the Preparation Phase.
1.a - Employees Come or Go
You check your schedule notes, and see that you gain two employees.
You decide to draw 1 from the face-up display, and another 1 from the top of the deck.
1.b - Prepare Ingredients
Next you take Action tokens from storage and collect tokens from your employees.
Since this is the first day, all your tokens will come from the initial setup and your employees.
1.c - Equipment Check
Check the schedule and look for a breakdown icon. There is one icon, which means you draw 1 card.
Since you need two cards for a match, it will not cause a breakdown.
1.d - Increase Market Share
You have the option to spend money to increase your Market Share.
You feel like taking a risk, so you begin by increasing the Market level by 1 and start with 5 customers.
2.a - Customers Arrive
The shop is now open for business! You check your market level: 5 customers. You deal a face-down deck of 5 customers and then draw 3 into a face-up display.
It's time to make your pastries!
2.b - Make the Recipe & Serve Customers
First, check the first step of the recipe... and then select a sheet and lay it flat on the table.
Now you place tokens to fill the customer orders. However, you are limited to placing tokens on the central 9 squares of the grid (3x3).
Your first placement serves a customer who wants a 'Tart' and a 'Spicy' pastry. Once they are served, you discard them and select the reward.
You choose to add the token into your general supply.
With that customer served, a new one arrives. This one wants a Sweet, Tart and Spicy pastry.
You see a way to complete two customer orders at the same time. You can place the size 2 token and the size 3 token to serve two customers.
Between the two tokens, you are able to get the two Savory icons that the customer on the right needs, and then the Sweet, Tart and Spicy icons the other customer needs.
You choose to gain the tokens from both customers. You are hoping to serve a lot of customers in this round!
You have now satisfied 3 customers. You draw another customer from the deck.
There is only one left, which gives you two customers remaining to be served this turn.
You notice that you have two tokens left.
With the middle section mostly filled, you cannot fit any more of your tokens there. So, it is time to move to the next step.
You must now fold in the two opposite sides. You may rotate the pastry before doing so.
Pay close attention to your remaining tokens and your customers before folding the pastry.
When folding, you may cover up Action tokens that are already placed.
You place your remaining size 2 token to cover the two Salty icons that are next to each other. Thanks to your clever fold, these icons are perfectly matched to fill this customer's order!
You choose to take the money from this customer.
Then, you place your last token. It covers one more icon than you need, but that's okay. You have now fulfilled your last customer!
This customer has some very flexible tokens as a reward, so you choose to take the tokens.
Now that you have placed all of your Action tokens and there are no customers left, you close your shop for the day!
3.a - Check Customers & Update Market
You now check if there are any customers left in the day's deck or the face-up display. Through clever play, you have served all of your customers. If not, you would have had to reduce your market level for each customer left.
Taking the risk to increase the market on your first day has paid off!
3.b - Pay Employees
Now, you must pay your employees. In this case, you must pay 5 money.
With the money you had during setup and the amount you collected from customers, you can cover it without any problem.
3.c - Repair Equipment
Next, you may decide to replace any of the faulty equipment.
In this case, you decide to pay the 4 money to replace the Window Display.
With your extra tokens, you were planning to increase the market share level anyway, which is the reward for replacing the old window display. And now you no longer risk a collapsing window display!
3.d - End of Day
With the day over, you must now move the Round marker forward and prepare for the next round.
However, both of your employees have powers that activate in step 3.d!
Unfortunately, neither of them trigger this round. But they will be very useful in the future.
You are now ready for Day 2!
