Common Area Setup
Supermarkets must be well organized in order to extract the most money from your customers and maximize efficiency and profits. This is how to set up the play area for yourself and your fellow players.
-
Stack the Miel, Inventory, and Employee cards marked MA in a location easy to reach for all players. These cards make up the "Supply."
-
Place the Starting Current Prices card here.
-
Stack the Sales Forecast cards in the following order, facedown from bottom to top:
- 13 Year 2 Sales Forecast cards (shuffled)
- Fiscal Reporting card
- 7 Year 2 Sales Forecast cards + 2 Current Prices cards (shuffled)
- One random Current Prices card
- 9 Year 1 Sales Forecast cards + 2 Current Prices cards (shuffled)
This forms the Sales Forecasts Deck.
-
Take 3 unused Year 1 Sales Forecast cards and place them face up next to the Sales Forecasts Deck. This is the Sales Forecast Display. Cards here are said to be on display.
-
Return the rest of the Year 1 Sales Forecast and Current Prices cards to the box.
Individual Player Setup
Place the Starting Player Reveal Reminder card in front of the player who most recently went shopping.
Then all players do the following:
- Take 7 One Miel cards, 2 Food Inventory cards and 1 Clothes Inventory card to form their facedown Draw Pile.
- Take another 8 One Miel cards and place them in their Bank faceup.
- Place 1 Junior Salesperson face up in their Supermarket.
- Shuffle their Draw Piles and draw a Hand of five cards.
Play Area Terms
- Supermarket - This is where you will play inventory and employees. Cards here are always face up and can be stocked, sold, or otherwise used for their card text.
- Hand - Your Hand represents the resources currently available for you to use, and should be kept hidden from other players.
- Draw Pile - This represents resources not yet available to you. Whenever the game instructs you to draw cards, always draw them from here. Cards in the Draw Pile are always face down. Players are not allowed to look at the cards in any player's Draw Pile, including their own.
- Warehouse - This is your discard pile, and represents your stored or unavailable assets such as busy Employees, non-liquid Miel, and inventory in transit. Cards in your Warehouse are always face up.
- Bank - Any time you receive Miel, the cards always go into your Bank. Only Miel cards (One Miel, Three Miel, and Ten Miel cards) can be placed in your Bank. These cards are always face up.
Gameplay
Now you're ready to run your supermarket! Just need to take care of a few legal details: please sign here, here, here, here…
Play begins with the Starting Player who takes their turn. Play then proceeds to the player on their left, who takes their turn, and continuing onward around the table.
Each player's turn consists of six phases, which must be performed in this order:
- Starting Player Reveal
- Actions
- Cleanup
- Draw
- Reveal Sales Forecast.
Phase 1: Starting Player Reveal
If you are the Starting Player, you must reveal a new Sales Forecast card from the Sales Forecast Deck and all players must resolve its effects if a Current Prices card is revealed.
If doing this would cause there to be more than 5 Sales Forecast cards on display, replace the one with the lowest reward value. In case of a tie, the player to the right of the Starting Player chooses which one to remove.
Phase 2: Actions
During your turn, you may perform any or all of the following actions, in any order:
Get new stuff!
- Purchase - Move any number of Inventory from the Supply to your Warehouse, paying the costs.
- Hire - Move ONE Employee from the Supply to your Warehouse, paying the cost.
Prepare your stuff!
- Stock - Move any number of Inventory from your Hand to your Supermarket.
- Standby - Move any number of Employees from your Hand to your Supermarket.
- Withdraw - Move any amount of Miel from your Bank and place them into your Warehouse.
Use your stuff!
- Sales Forecast Action - Play a Sales Forecast Action card from your Hand.
- Use an Employee Ability - Move that Employee from your Hand or Supermarket to your Warehouse.
- Sell - Move ONE Inventory from your Supermarket to the Supply, and receive an amount of Miel as stated on the Current Prices card.
Actions Explained
Purchase/Hire - Purchasing and Hiring are very similar. Pay the cost of any amount of Inventory cards or a single Employee card by spending Miel cards from your Hand and returning them to the Supply. The purchased Inventory or Employee cards are placed in your Warehouse.
Players may only hire ONE Employee per round, unless it's through the use of the Recruiter Staff ability.
EXAMPLE: Alicia has five One Miel cards in her hand, giving her a total of 5 Miel to spend. She plays all of them to buy one Appliance Inventory card (3 Miel), one Security/Thief Employee card (1 Miel) and one Food Inventory card (1 Miel). She places the five One Miel cards that she spent back into the Supply. The three cards she purchased go into her Warehouse.
Stock - Players place an Inventory card from their Hand into their Supermarket. Inventory must be Stocked in order to be sold.
Standby - Players play any number of Employees from their Hand into their Supermarket. A maximum of one of each Employee type can be on Standby at any given time.
Withdraw - Move any amount of money from your Bank into your Warehouse.
Sales Forecast Action - Players play any number of Sales Forecast Action cards from their Hand, following the instructions on the card text.
Please note that Sales Forecast requirements and rewards cannot be reduced below zero, even through the use of attached Sales Forecast actions.
Use an Employee Ability - Choose an Employee from your Hand or currently on Standby in your Supermarket. Resolve either the top or the bottom ability text and move them to your Warehouse, unless specified otherwise by the ability text. Some employees (e.g. Security) have a constant effect so long as they are on Standby.
Fulfillment - To fulfill a Sales Forecast card, players must use a Salesperson or Junior Salesperson Staff Ability, before performing the following steps in order:
i. Choose one Sales Forecast card. ii. Return the number of Inventory stated on the Sales Forecast card from their Supermarket to the Supply (including any added by the Sales Forecast Action). iii. Take the amount of Miel listed on the Sales Forecast card in the Reward section and place it in their Bank in either One Miel or Ten Miel denominations. iv. Place the Sales Forecast card and any attached Sales Forecast Action cards and the Salesperson in their Warehouse.
EXAMPLE: Ching Yi wishes to fulfill this Sales Forecast card which has been modified by a Sales Forecast Attachment. She returns a Junior Salesperson on Standby in her Supermarket to her Warehouse, then returns 1 Food and 2 Clothes from her Supermarket to the Supply. She receives 14 Miel for doing so.
Sell - Take an Inventory card from your Supermarket and return it to the Supply, then take a number of One Miel cards equal to the sale price of that Inventory as listed on the Current Prices card and place it in your Bank.
Players may only sell one Inventory card per round.
EXAMPLE: Briana has a Clothes Inventory card in her hand that she would like to sell. She looks at the Current Prices card and sees that the selling price of Clothes is 4 Miel. She returns the Clothes Inventory card to the Supply and receives 4 One Miel cards which she places in her Bank.
Phase 3: Cleanup
Discard any unused cards in your Hand into your Warehouse.
Phase 4: Draw
Draw 5 cards from your Draw Pile into your Hand. If your Draw Pile has fewer than five cards, draw as many as you can, then shuffle your Warehouse and form a new Draw Pile. Draw until you have five cards in your Hand.
Phase 5: Reveal Sales Forecasts
If there are fewer than 3 face up Sales Forecast cards, reveal Sales Forecast cards from the top of the Sales Forecast Deck until there are 3 face up Sales Forecast cards.
If a Current Prices card is revealed during this phase, resolve its text, and then place it so that it covers the existing Current Prices card.
If the Fiscal Reporting card is revealed, place it next to the Starting Player Reveal Reminder Card. Resolve the text of the Fiscal Reporting card at the beginning of the Starting Player's next turn.
Component Limitations
One Miel and Ten Miel cards are considered to have a limitless supply.
All Employee, Inventory and Three Miel cards are limited in their quantity.
In the event that there are not enough One Miel cards, players should convert 10 One Miel cards in their Bank into 1 Ten Miel card to replenish the Supply.
Ten Miel cards may be converted back to ten One Miel cards at any time.
Game End
It's time to face the moment which makes every business owner quake in their suspenders - audit.
When the Fiscal Reporting card is revealed, this card will instruct you as to when the end of the game will occur. This ensures that all players have exactly the same number of turns.
Winning the Game
The best* thing about Capitalism is that there's only ever one winner!
*see terms and conditions
To determine the winner, all players perform the following steps:
- Total all Miel in their Bank, Hand, Warehouse, and Draw Pile.
- Total the cost of all Inventory in their Hand, Warehouse, Draw Pile, and Supermarket, and add that amount to their Total Miel.
The player with the highest Miel total is the winner.
In case of a tie, the winner is the player with the highest total cost of unsold Inventory.
In case of a further tie, the winner is the player with the highest number of Employees in their Warehouse and Draw Pile.
In case of a further tie, the winner is the player furthest from the Starting Player.
