What if I take a Contract/Load die but can't take the contract (not enough dice)?
One player's reading, consistent with the rulebook saying the contract is optional and loading is allowed from contracts you hold.

You still take the die and simply cannot take that contract. Taking the contract is always optional, and you can still load containers from contracts you already hold, up to the row's value. The generic back may need fewer dice and may still be possible.
