How do I use a hero who sits in another player's group?

The hero's owner must first spend a help action to connect the groups; then you help the hero card on your own revealed card, and the combined group can use the hero's ability. The owner uses the help option on that card and the two decide who receives the effect. You cannot help the hero directly without the owner.
