Does Chieftain's Clothing stop me from splitting damage?

The designer's reading: the cloth is treated like a human, so damage from one card cannot be split between the cloth and humans, but damage from separate red cards can be, including onto the cloth. He notes he may be wrong, as he did not write the rules.
