Game Elements

Park Map

Use the red side of this two-sided board for the normal game and the gray side for the easy game. The easy game uses a simplified version of the board.

Attraction types:

  • Ride: includes the ride name (to learn more about each ride, see About the Park), points, puke factor, ride type icons (dark ride / water ride / roller coaster), and thrill level (mild / moderate / extreme).
  • Featured ride: the names of these featured rides appear in lights, and include the ride icons mentioned above.
  • Restaurant
  • Show
  • Shop
  • Transportation
  • Guest Services: Bonus Mission Cards
  • Photo Booth
  • Empty attractions (easy game only): you can walk through these attractions but cannot visit them.

The four areas of the map are "Vila Festera" (Party Town), "Barranc de les Llegendes" (Legends Canyon), "Camp Putrefacte" (Putrefied Pastures) and "Ciutat Calavera" (Skull City). The map also shows the Fatal Fireworks Show, the Park entrance, and gateways between areas.

Waiting Area

Use the red side of this two-sided board for the normal game and the gray side for the easy game. It contains the Round marker, the Puke-O-Meter, the time tracker sections, the points scored for taking a photo with the Zombie Queen in each part of the time tracker, the points at which a show occurs on the time tracker (show times), and the Zombie Queen Break Room.

Score sheet

The score sheet has: rides and shows in each area, medals, coins (for shopping), First Aid costs, Zombie Queen photos, a T-shirt for puke stains, and the final score section.

Red sections on the score sheet (coins, First Aid costs, and some boxes in the "final score" section) are not used for the easy game.

Time cards

Time cards are split into 4 sections, one for each area on the map: "Vila Festera" (upper left), "Bosc de les Llegendes" (upper right), "Camp Putrefacte" (bottom left) and "Ciutat Calavera" (bottom right). Wait times appear in three sections: one wait time for the featured ride, and another for all other rides. An Under Maintenance sign appears in the fourth section.

  • The Under Maintenance sign indicates that that area is under maintenance this round.
  • Wait time for all non-featured rides in an area.
  • Wait time for the featured ride in an area ("el Passatge del Butoni" in "Bosc de les Llegendes", "Arros Bomba" in "Camp Putrefacte", "Rapids la Riuà" in "Ciutat Calavera").
  • The card also indicates where to place the Zombie Queen for this round.

Wheel of Paella

Ride side and Show side. The ride side has the Security guard and puke inhibitor numbers. The show side has 5 paella ingredients. Note: A traditional Valencian paella includes the following ingredients which appear on the Wheel of Paella: chicken, rabbit, snails, tomato, and broad beans.

Assembly: 1. Put the base together. 2. Attach the plastic rivet and Wheel. 3. Put Joan Monleón on the Show side.

How to Play

Normal game: The complete strategy game lasts 4 rounds (approximately 60 minutes).

Easy game: The easy game is perfect for beginners or your first game and lasts 2 rounds (approximately 40 minutes). All red text in the Game Rules only applies for the normal game. Ignore it when playing the easy game.

Setting Up the Game

  1. Put the four pieces of the board together to make the Park Map. Place it on the center of the table, picking the red side for the normal game or the gray side for the easy game.
  2. Place the Wheel of Paella and Waiting Area next to the Park Map.
  3. Shuffle the time cards. Draw the first 4 (or 2 for the easy game) and stack them face down in the center of the Park Map. Put the other time cards back in the box. Flip over the first time card in the stack.
  4. Place the Zombie Queen in the spot marked on the time card you flipped over.
  5. Place the 2 Under Maintenance tokens at the 2 gateways to the area indicated on the time card.
  6. Randomly place one show time token face up on each show.
  7. Each player picks a color and takes:
    • 1 Quick Guide. Pick the side for the version of the game you are playing: red, normal game; gray, easy game.
    • 1 score sheet.
    • 1 visitor of their color to place at the Park entrance.
    • 1 timekeeper of their color to place in the Waiting Area at the beginning of the time tracker (indicated with a zero). Mix all timekeepers, draw them at random, and place them as if they were standing in a line. The first player in line starts the game, followed by each player based on their spot in line.
    • 1 puke token of their color to place at the beginning of the Puke-O-Meter in the Waiting Area.
  8. Shuffle the Shopping cards and place them face down next to the board. Deal each player 2 Shopping cards from this deck.
  9. Shuffle the main mission cards and deal 2 to each player. Shuffle the bonus mission cards and deal 2 to each player. Each player decides which cards they wish to keep. A player must keep one main mission and may keep as many bonus missions as they wish (zero, 1 or 2). Discard the remaining cards.
  10. Create two stacks of cards with one bonus mission per player in each stack. Place each stack near one of the Guest Services areas.

Game Play

Paella Park is played in turns and lasts for 4 rounds (2 rounds for the easy game), which represent 8 hours at the amusement park. Game play is not clockwise or counter-clockwise. Each turn:

  1. Identify the active player by looking at the Waiting Area. The player in the last section in line is the active player. If multiple players are in the same section of the Waiting Area, the first player in line in that section is the active player.
  2. The active player takes one action and moves their timekeeper forward one section on the time tracker for every 10 minutes spent to complete that action. If a timekeeper ends up in a section with other timekeepers, place it at the end of the line in that section.

After each action is complete, follow the instructions above to identify the active player. Keep playing until the round ends.

Example: The active player is in section 30 of the Waiting Area. On their turn, their action takes 20 minutes. Move their timekeeper forward 2 sections and place it in section 50. As another player's timekeeper is already in this section, place the active player's timekeeper behind the timekeeper that was there before.

End of the Round

When a player reaches the last section of the Waiting Area (minute 110), they continue moving forward from the beginning of the Waiting Area (minute 0). The last turn in the round begins when the final player goes past section 110.

At that point, the player finishes their action. Then, the board is reset for the next round:

  • Time card. Discard the current card and flip over the next one.
  • Zombie Queen. Place the Zombie Queen in the spot indicated on the time card you just flipped over.
  • Under Maintenance tokens. If necessary, move the Under Maintenance tokens to the gateways to the area indicated on the time card you just flipped over.

The end of the game is triggered when the 4th round (2nd round for the easy game) ends. (See End of the Game.)

Actions

The active player takes one action:

  • Walk around the park
  • Grab a seat at the Fatal Fireworks (last round only)
  • Visit an attraction
    • Go on a ride
    • See a show
    • Visit Guest Services
    • Grab a bite at a restaurant
    • Go shopping
    • Catch the Zombie Queen at a Photo Booth

Walk around the park

Visitors walk around the park by moving from one attraction to another. Attractions are connected with lines. Visitors can walk around the entire park, including in the area that is under maintenance. A visitor can move up to 10 attractions, as long as they are all connected, and can never move forwards, then move backwards, on the same turn.

NOTE: In the easy game, you can walk through empty attractions, but cannot visit them.

Two Transportation attractions with the same name are also connected. For example, a visitor can move from "La Panderola" in the Vila Festera area to "La Panderola" in the Ciutat Calavera area.

Calculate how long it takes to walk around the park based on the distance between attractions:

  • 1 to 4 attractions: 10 minutes
  • 5 to 7 attractions: 20 minutes
  • 8 to 10 attractions: 30 minutes

Example: Enric's visitor is currently at the "Tombatossals 4D" ride in the "Barranc de les llegendes" area and wants to walk to "Cagallons per sèquia." He moves to "L'albufera Calavera" and then to "L'albufera Calavera" in the "Camp Putrefacte" area. Then, he continues to "Regals La Figa Ta Tia" and ends up at "Cagallons per sèquia." He has moved a total of 4 attractions, taking a total of 10 minutes, and moves his timekeeper one section forward on the time tracker in the Waiting Area.

Grab a seat at the Fatal Fireworks

At any point during the fourth and last round (second and last round for the easy game), you can make your last move of the game by grabbing a seat to see the Fatal Fireworks, the mascletà mortal. To do so, place your visitor in the highest scoring empty spot at the Fatal Fireworks Show. Each of these spots scores a different point value at the end of the game (1 / 2 / 3 / 6 / 10). Remove your timekeeper from the Waiting Area; you have made your last move of the game. If you go past section 110 in the Waiting Area during the last round of the game, you cannot "Grab a seat at the Fatal Fireworks."

Example: Esther's visitor is at Records El Donyet and her timekeeper is in section 100 of the Waiting Area during the last round of the game. Esther decides to end her day at the park. She moves her visitor to the highest scoring empty spot at the Fatal Fireworks Show (10 points) and takes her timekeeper off the Waiting Area board. This is her last move of the game.

Visit an attraction

You can only visit an attraction when your visitor is at that attraction. More than one player can visit an attraction at the same time.

Go on a ride

IMPORTANT! You cannot go on a ride in an area that is under maintenance, i.e. when Under Maintenance tokens are placed at the gateways to that area. You can only go on each ride once.

Before you go on a ride, decide if you want to cut the line. Check the time card to find out how long the line for that ride is and decide whether or not you want to cut the line. If you decide to cut the line, say how many minutes (10, 20, 30, 40 or 50) you want to cut off your wait time, up to the total wait time for that ride.

Then, spin the ride side of the Wheel of Paella. When it stops, follow these steps in order:

  1. Wait times. If you decided to cut the line, either:

    • You did not spin a Security Guard. Congratulations! Subtract the number of minutes you announced from the time on the time card to calculate your wait time for this ride.
    • You spun the Security Guard. Bad luck! Add the number of minutes you announced to the time on the time card to calculate your wait time for this ride.

If you decided not to cut the line, your wait time is indicated on the time card. In either case, move your timekeeper one section forward in the Waiting Area for every 10 minutes of wait time.

WARNING! Don't try to shave too much time off your wait! If you spin the wrong number, you might end up waiting a long time for your next turn. However, if your action does not take any time (zero minutes), you remain the active player, and take another turn.

  2. Puke. Every ride has a puke factor between 1 and 5. Subtract the puke inhibitor number you spun on the Wheel of Paella from the puke factor. If the result is higher than zero, you puked! Calculate the difference between the puke factor and the puke inhibitor you spun, and move your puke token that many spots forward on the Puke-O-Meter. You cannot move your puke token backwards.

If you puked, regardless of how many spots you moved forward on the Puke-O-Meter, you puke all over yourself and another player of your choice. Draw a puke stain on the t-shirts on the score sheets for each player that got puked on. Players lose points for every puke stain at the end of the game.

NOTE: In 2-player games, players only puke on themselves.

If your puke token gets to the final spot on the Puke-O-Meter (First Aid), cross off a First Aid station on your score sheet and move your timekeeper forward in the Waiting Area. The wait time is indicated on the First Aid station you just crossed off. At the end of the game, subtract the number of points indicated on every First Aid station you crossed off from your final score. The penalty increases every time you get First Aid.

You cannot go on a ride when your puke token is at the First Aid station on the Puke-O-Meter.

Example of going on a ride:

  1. Eloi's visitor is at "Cagallons per séquia," and he decides to go on the ride. Since the area is not under maintenance, the ride is open. Eloi sees that the wait time is 20 minutes and tries to cut the line by 10 minutes.
  2. He spins the Wheel of Paella and gets the Security Guard and puke inhibitor -2.
  3. He got caught trying to cut the line! He moves forward 30 minutes in the Waiting Area (20 minutes + the 10 minutes he tried to cut). Since the puke factor on the "Cagallons per séquia" ride is 3 and he spun a -2 on the Wheel of Paella, the difference is 3-2=1 and Eloi pukes. He moves his puke token 1 spot forward on the Puke-O-Meter.
  4. Eloi decides to puke on Enric and draws one puke stain on his own score sheet and one puke stain on Enric's score sheet. Then, Eloi crosses off the "Cagallons per séquia" ride, which is worth 4 points, on his score sheet.

Normal game only (red text)

The following passages are printed in red in the rulebook (normal game only; ignore them in the easy game): the 4-round length; the puke token and Puke-O-Meter setup, and the puke rules (puke factor, puking on players, First Aid); setup steps 8 to 10 (Shopping cards, main and bonus missions, Guest Services stacks); the Visit Guest Services, Grab a bite at a restaurant and Go shopping actions; spinning the Wheel of Paella after a show; mission, Shopping card and coin scoring; and the First Aid penalties. This list was derived from the text colour in the PDF, so treat it as a guide.

Get a medal for being the first player to visit all the attractions in an area

If you are the first player to visit all the attractions (rides and shows) in one of the park's four areas, cross off the medal for that area on your score sheet and score a bonus at the end of the game! Only one player can get the medal for each area.

See a show

You can only see a show when your timekeeper is in a section of the Waiting Area with a show time (0, 30, 60, 90) that matches the show time token where your visitor is.

You can see a show even if the rides in an area are under maintenance.

All shows last 20 minutes. You can also go see a show early. To do so, move your timekeeper forward to the section of the Waiting Area with the show time token, then move it an additional two sections forward to account for the 20 minutes the show lasts.

After you see a show, cross it off on your score sheet. Every show you see is worth 7 points.

Spin the Wheel of Paella: All shows are presented by the legendary Valencian TV host Joan Monleón, whose game show featured a 6-foot-tall paella-shaped roulette wheel. After crossing off the show you saw on your score sheet, flip the Wheel of Paella to the show side, name an ingredient, and spin the wheel. If it lands on the ingredient you named, draw a Shopping card.

You can only see each show once.

Example: Esther's visitor is at the "Moros i Cristians" show, where the show time token is "60." She decides to see the show. Since her timekeeper is in section 50 of the Waiting Area, she moves her timekeeper forward three sections (30 minutes total: 20 minutes to see the show and 10 minutes because she showed up early). Then, she crosses off the show on her score sheet to indicate she has seen it. She flips the wheel to the show side, says she hopes to spin a "rabbit," and spins the wheel. It stops on the rabbit + snail, so she draws a Shopping card from the deck.

Visit Guest Services

When you visit Guest Services, draw 2 bonus mission cards from the deck at that Guest Services location. Keep 1 and place the other at the bottom of that deck. You score points for all completed missions and lose points for all incomplete missions at the end of the game. Using this action takes 10 minutes. If there is only one mission left, draw it and keep it. If there are no missions at a Guest Services location, you cannot use this action.

Grab a bite at a restaurant

You can grab a bite to eat at any Restaurant. To do so, reset your puke token back to the initial spot. This action takes 10 minutes.

Go shopping

You can go shopping at any Shop. To do so, cross off one of the five coins on your score sheet, move your timekeeper forward 10 minutes and draw 3 Shopping cards. (See Shopping cards.) Do not show them to the other players. Pick one, place it in your hand, and put the remaining two cards at the bottom of the Shopping cards deck.

Catch the Zombie Queen at a Photo Booth

The park's mascot, the Zombie Queen, moves to a different location every round. If you are both in the same spot at the beginning of your turn, you can decide to take a photo with her. Cross off the number of points you have just scored: 3, 6, 9 or 12 points depending on where your timekeeper is in the Waiting Area. Move your timekeeper 10 minutes forward in the Waiting Area and place the Zombie Queen in her Break Room near the Park entrance; she will not go back out into the park until the next round.

Example:

  1. The Zombie Queen is at the "Monòlegs de la Delicà de Gandia" show. Enric's visitor is also there, and he decides to take a photo with the Zombie Queen.
  2. Since his timekeeper is at minute 80 in the Waiting Area, he scores the 9 points indicated on the Waiting Area board, which he writes on his score sheet.
  3. He moves his timekeeper forward to minute 90.
  4. Then he puts the Zombie Queen in her Break Room.

End of the Game

During the fourth round (second round for the easy game), after all players have grabbed a seat at the Fatal Fireworks or gone past the last section on the time tracker in the Waiting Area, the game ends and scores are tallied. All players add up the points they have earned and write the total on the bottom of their score sheet. Score points for:

  • Rides and shows you visited: Add up all the points for every ride you went on (which varies from ride to ride) and the shows you saw (7 points per show).
  • Medals: Add up all the points for medals you earned for being the first player to visit all the attractions in one of the park's four areas. The number of points varies from area to area.
  • Photos with the Zombie Queen: Add up all the points you earned for taking a photo with the Zombie Queen (3, 6, 9 or 12 points per photo).
  • Spot at the Fatal Fireworks: Earn points based on your spot at the Fatal Fireworks Show (10, 6, 3, 2, 1 or zero, if your visitor is not at the Fatal Fireworks Show).
  • Missions: Each player reveals their main and bonus missions. Score points for all completed missions and lose the number of points indicated on the mission card for every mission you did not complete.
  • Shopping cards: Score extra points for souvenir cards. (See Shopping cards.)
  • Coins: Score 1 point for each coin you did not spend to purchase Shopping cards.
  • Puke stains and trips to First Aid: Lose 1 point for every vomit stain on your t-shirt. Lose the number of points indicated on every First Aid station you crossed off.

The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the highest total score for shows and rides wins. A tie for total shows and rides is not broken further.

Shopping Cards

You get Shopping cards at the beginning of the game, by purchasing them with coins at a Shop, or if you luck out when spinning the show side of the Wheel of Paella. Keep your Shopping cards in your hand and play them to use special actions. Shopping cards can only be played on your turn and are discarded after use.

  • Souvenirs (Zombie Doll, Balloons or Lollipop): Keep Souvenir cards in your hand for the entire game, and score 3 points for each Souvenir card in your hand at the end of the game. If you have a set of all 3 souvenir cards (Zombie Doll + Balloons + Lollipop) at the end of the game, score a 5-point bonus.
  • Wheel of Paella: After spinning the ride or show side of the Wheel of Paella, play this card and move the wheel one space clockwise.
  • Fast pass: Play this card when you go on a ride and decide not to cut the line. This card reduces that ride's wait time to zero for your turn.
  • Electric golf cart: Play this card at any attraction to immediately move to any other attraction without spending any time.
  • Puke pills: Play this card at any attraction and reset your puke token to the beginning of the Puke-O-Meter without spending any time. You must play this card at the beginning of your turn, before taking an action.
  • Wrench: Go on any ride in an area that is under maintenance without waiting in line. Play this card when you are at the ride you wish to go on.

Mission Cards

If you complete all the tasks on a mission card, you score points at the end of the game. If you do not complete all the tasks on the card, you lose the number of points indicated on the card at the end of the game. There are two types of missions:

  • Main missions: You only have one main mission per game.
  • Bonus missions: You can accept as many bonus missions as you'd like during the game (including zero).

All mission cards have between one and three tasks to complete.

Sample mission cards:

  • Score 3 points at the end of the game if you rode the "Cremà Exprés." If not, lose 3 points.
  • Score 8 points at the end of the game if you rode at least three rides with a moderate thrill level and took a photo with the Zombie Queen. If not, lose 8 points.
  • Score 18 points at the end of the game if you rode at least 6 rides of any type and saw both the "Tirisiti" and "Glorieta de la Banda" shows. If not, lose 18 points.
  • Score 9 points at the end of the game if you rode at least 5 non-dark rides. If not, lose 9 points.
  • Score 6 points at the end of the game if you have a Balloons Souvenir card in your hand and saw the "Monòlegs de la Delicà de Gandia" show. If not, lose 6 points.

About the Park

Paella Park takes you on a thrilling ride through a fictional theme park based on La Fallera Calavera ("The Zombie Queen"), a card game that draws on Valencian culture and folklore. Read on for a description of each of the shows and rides in the park. You do not need this information to play, but the detailed descriptions of every attraction will make the game more fun.

Mascletà mortal (Fatal Fireworks). This ear-shattering pyrotechnics show recounts the death of the Zombie Queen. Cap off your day at Paella Park with this dazzling finale. Show up early to grab the best seats!

Note: The mascletà is a fireworks show that traditionally takes place during the Falles festivities in Valencia. A number of firecrackers, called masclets, are linked with fuses and fired one after another, creating a thunderous, bone-shaking pyrotechnics show.

Ciutat Calavera

Attractions in the medieval-themed "Skull City" regale you with stories from the late Middle Ages, Valencia's golden era.

  • El Tio Sangonera (Glutton's Paradise). This all-you-can-eat buffet is named for "Sangonera," a famous glutton from Valencian literature who binged 'til he dropped.
  • Ràpids la Riuà (Flooded River Rapids). Featured ride! Rapids roar and water plumes soar into the air on this dizzying river raft ride set in a flooded Valencia. Warning: You might get soaked!
  • Regals l'Alcaldessa Perpètua (The Gift That Keeps On Giving). This gift shop pays tribute to Valencia's long-serving mayor, who was in office for a whopping 24 years. Pick up some of her famous pearls (or slip her a gift of your own)!

  • Rocòdrom Muralla de Morella (Medieval Walls of Morella). Scale the city of Morella's mythical medieval walls. Warning: Only the fittest will survive.
  • Glorieta de la Banda (The Bandstand). Even the smallest Valencian town has a woodwind band that breaks into song at every opportunity. Will parade marches or classic musicals take the stage at today's show? Head on over and find out!
  • El Tribunal de les Aigües (Tribunal of Waters). The world's oldest court has been settling water-related disputes for over a thousand years. Will your clan prevail in this Family Feud-style, water-themed ride?

Barranc de les Llegendes

The wooded "Legends Canyon" is dotted with caves recounting Valencian myths and legends.

  • Records El Donyet (Goblin's Gifts). Pick up mouthwatering sweets and spooky souvenirs from this magical gift shop run by mischievous hobgoblins.
  • Tirant lo Blanc. Step into the shoes of one of the most famous medieval knights on this mild, family-friendly roller coaster. Can your chivalry save the Byzantine empire?
  • La Dama Giratòria d'Elx (Spinning Lady of Elx). Climb aboard this spinning double pendulum designed to resemble the Lady of Elx's voluminous hairdo. Warning: This extreme ride has been known to leave even zombies a bit queasy. Good luck keeping down your lunch!
  • L'albufera Calavera (Swamp of Skulls). Hop on a ferry crewed by a ghoul and make your way across the skull-strewn swamp to the "Camp Putrefacte" (Putrefied Pastures).
  • Monòlegs de la Delicà de Gandia (Damsel in Distress Comedy Theatre). This medieval damsel in distress was so delicate that she was said to have died when a single flower petal blew her way. Tales of medieval chivalry aside, this comedy theatre is always a barrel of laughs.
  • El Passatge del Butoni (Butoni's Haunted Mansion). Featured ride! Combining 3D glasses, water effects and animatronics, this mansion is haunted by Valencia's most legendary spook, Butoni. Ghouls, goblins, ghosts and zombies will leave you shaking in your shoes on this puke-inducing ride.
  • Tombatossals 4D (The Friendly Giant). Vibrating seats, wind effects, and 3D glasses all feature on this interactive motion simulator telling the story of Tombatossals, the friendly giant that built the city of Castelló de la Plana.

Vila Festera

This seaside "Party Town" pays tribute to traditional Valencian festivals.

  • Bar La Mentireta (Liar's Liqueurs). Sidle up to this bar serving typical Valencian cocktails, including the mentireta ("white lie"), a lemon slushie spiked with coffee liqueur.
  • Moros i Cristians (The Moors and the Christians). Experience the ardor of the famous love story, when a Moorish Captain fell for his Christian counterpart. Enjoy ballads and song and dance numbers at this family-friendly musical.
