Components (Instrumentos do Rock)

  • 1 Board (Tabuleiro)
  • 24 Dice in 4 distinct colours (Dados)
  • 5 Band sheets (Fichas de Bandas)
  • 32 Distortion cards (Cartas de Distorção)
  • 16 Hit cards (Cartas de Hits)
  • 16 Cancel tokens (Fichas de Anulação)
  • 4 Awards (Premiações)

  • 16 red attribute markers (Marcadores Vermelhos de Atributos)
  • 16 "+10" attribute markers (Marcadores de Atributo +10)

Setup (Preparação do Palco)

  1. Shuffle the band sheets and each player chooses one side (not Metallum). Place a red cube on your band sheet to mark Fans, Fame, Grana and Overdrive. Also receive a set of four dice of the same colour.

  2. The cube marking Grana is placed on level 1 of the Grana track for the first player; on level 2 for the second player; level 3 for the third and level 4 for the fourth. The remaining cubes are placed on the symbol of that attribute, representing 0.

  3. The player who likes rock the most is the first player; in case of a tie, the player who knows the most unknown bands ("undergrounds") is the first player.

  4. Place the board in the centre of the table. In two-player games, the spaces marked "3 e 4" are not used (use some cancel tokens to block these spaces).

  5. Three Hit cards are placed on the table at random. The rest are shuffled and left in a face-down pile. These cards may have dice allocated to them as if they were additional board spaces.

  6. The four award tokens are placed beside the board face up, in this order: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

  7. Three Distortion cards are placed on the table at random. The rest are shuffled and left in a face-down pile.

  8. Finally, place the round marker on the space at the bottom of the Rock thermometer.

The Components (Cifra do Rock)

Components are divided into board, dice, bands, awards, hits and distortion.

Board (Tabuleiro)

The board is the stage of the show and is where everything happens. The spaces on the board are for allocation and represent actions you can take with your members (dice).

Each action may help evolve your band, acquire new members, receive Grana and help manipulate the dice. See more in "Allocation Phase" (page 11).

  • The "Intimidation" and "Acoustic" spaces are only available in games of three or more players.
  • The "Resources" space is always accessible to all players, regardless of how many dice are already allocated to it.

Dice (Dados)

Dice represent the members of your band and have three functions during the game: allocation, Battle of Bands (rounds 3, 6 and 8) and symbol collection (round 8).

a) Allocation: their faces give access to certain actions that can be taken on the board and on Hit cards. b) Battle of Bands: they are converted into bonuses at the end of the battle (page 11). c) Symbol collection: they help complete the symbol collection after the Final Battle (page 12).

The faces. Each die has 6 faces: 1 Horns Up face, 2 Skull faces, 2 Chord faces and 1 Influence face. Faces are used to be allocated to board spaces (and Hit cards) to generate their effect, and also grant bonuses in the Battle of Bands and in the symbol collection at the end of the game.

Wildcard: when a "?" symbol appears on the board or on a Hit card, any face may be allocated to that space.

Bands (Bandas)

Each player controls a band with four attributes: Fans, Fame, Grana and Overdrive. These attributes are managed on their own tracks and can reach levels above 10. When this happens, place a "+10" marker on the track whose level increased and position the marker on the spaces, now considering the sum of the 10-level marker plus the current marking.

  • Fans (Fãs): this attribute represents the legion of fans won by your band. At the end of the game, the Fans level is converted into points. It is important also to win the award discs and as the second tiebreak criterion, and it provides a symbol for your collection when it reaches level 5.
  • Fame (Fama): indicates how famous your band is. At the end of the game, the Fame level is converted into points, and during the game it defines who will be the first player in the Battle of Bands phases and in the following rounds. Fame contributes to winning awards and is used as the first tiebreak criterion. Upon reaching level 5, Fame gives you a shield icon (explained later).
  • Overdrive: represents the talent of your band. As it increases, special and exclusive abilities are unlocked for you to use during the allocation phase and the battle of bands, once per round. Upon reaching levels 1, 3, 6 and 10 you receive additional victory points.
  • Grana (cash): represents the money your band is earning. Grana serves to pay for some free actions, hire a new member, re-roll dice and buy Hit cards and Distortion cards. It is also used as the third tiebreak criterion.

Tiebreak criteria: Fame > Fans > Grana > Overdrive.

a) Each band has unique special abilities that are unlocked as its Overdrive level grows. At levels 1, 3 and 6, abilities A, B and C are unlocked respectively. In addition, levels 1, 3, 6 and 10 of Overdrive give extra points to your band at the end of the game.

b) Each band also starts with one symbol that will be part of your symbol collection. More details in "Symbol Collection" (page 13).

c) When a band reaches Fans level 5, a second symbol is unlocked to be part of the collection.

d) Bands also have a shield icon at Fame level 5. This shield protects one additional die during the Battle of Bands phases. More details in "Battle of Bands Phase" (page 11).

Grana and Free Actions (Grana e Ações Livres)

The Grana track allows some free actions (actions that do not require dice). To use these free actions, simply reduce the required levels on the Grana track and perform the action on your turn. There are six actions that can be carried out by spending Grana.

a) -1 Grana: re-roll any number of your dice that have not yet been allocated this round. This effect may be performed several times, paying 1 each re-roll.

b) -5 Grana: take one of your dice that has not yet been allocated this round and choose its face.

c) -10 Grana: raise one level of any attribute (Fame, Fans or Overdrive) of your band.

d) -10 Grana: gain an extra die without needing to perform the "New Member" space action.

e) -x Grana: once per round, you may acquire a Hit card revealed on the table by paying the value printed on the card. Place it in your play area and cancel one of your allocation spaces permanently with a cancel token. Reveal a new Hit card in the centre of the table.

f) -x Grana: once per round, you may acquire a Distortion card revealed on the table by paying 3 if there are 3 cards revealed on the table; 2 if there are 2 cards; and 1 if there is one card. When there are no more cards face up on the table, reveal 3 more.

See more about Hits on page 9.

Awards (Premiações)

Awards have the attribute target printed on them (a). When a player reaches the required levels, they may claim the corresponding award available in the centre of the table and place it beside their band board.

Awards grant victory points (b) to the band that won them, and each award grants a wildcard symbol for the symbol collection (c).

  • An award is not a requirement for another. A player may claim an award of higher value on their turn, provided they reach its target value.
  • If another player has already reached the target of an award held by someone else, they cannot claim it.
  • Claiming an award may be treated as a free action, so you can only take one award card per turn.

When a player who already holds an award reaches the target of a new available award, they may swap their award for the new one on the table. The old award then becomes available to the other players.

A band cannot hold more than one award.

Hits

Hit cards represent the great songs of the multiverse. While they are in the centre of the table, players perform covers of these songs, gaining Fans, Fame and even technical improvement for their band.

While in the centre of the table, Hit cards function as allocation spaces. These cards may also be bought by players through the free buying action, for the value printed on the card (a), spending the band's Grana. When you allocate dice to a Hit card, you receive the bonus described on the card (b).

When a card is bought, the player removes it from the centre of the table and places it beside their band board. Then they take a cancel token and cancel one space of the card (C).

Example: There are 3 Hit cards on the table. Ozzy buys the card "Back in Box" using his Grana. From this moment, this card belongs to Ozzy's band and he must cancel one of its allocation spaces permanently. Ozzy decides to cancel the Influence space. So, to activate this card now, it is enough to allocate a die showing the Influence face and any other die. The player who allocates to this card gains two levels of Fame.

Bought Hits are not exclusive to the band that bought them: other bands may also play them. To do so, a band allocates its dice onto the opponent's Hit card, and in that way everyone benefits.

The player who allocates dice to an opponent's Hit card gains the bonuses printed on the card, and the owner gains the same amount minus 1.

Minimum of 1 point.

At the end of the game, each Hit card grants one victory point (the symbol shown) to the player who bought it, and one symbol (d) for their symbol collection.

As soon as a Hit card is bought, a new one must be revealed in its place, and there must always be three cards available for purchase.

Example: Hendrix notices an opportunity to use the Hit card "Back in Box" of Ozzy's band and, in the same way Ozzy did earlier, allocates his dice: one die with the Influence face and one die of any face. Hendrix gains 2 levels of Fame and Ozzy, as owner of the Hit card, gains 1 level of Fame.

Distortion (Distorção)

Distortion cards are new technologies from other realities that help your band by breaking the barrier of space and time.

Distortion cards are single-use actions and may be used at any time during the turn of the player who bought them, executing the effect described (a). More than one card may be used in the same turn.

In addition to the action described on the card, Distortion cards give the player one icon for the symbol collection at the end of the game (b). Distortion cards that have been used by players are not removed from play; the symbols still count toward final scoring. Keep a pile of used Distortion cards near your band board.

In the lower left corner (C) there is an identification number to consult this manual in case of doubts about its effect.

Acquiring a Distortion card is a free action (only one card may be bought per player per turn), and the purchased card goes directly into the buyer's hand.

The cost to buy a Distortion card depends on the number of cards on the table:

  • With 3 cards, the cost is 3.
  • With 2 cards, the cost is 2.
  • With 1 card, the cost is 1.

When the last Distortion card is bought, three new ones are revealed. At the end of the Battle of Bands phases, all Distortion cards face up in the centre of the table are discarded and 3 new cards are revealed.

Goal of the Game (Rock'n Roll (Objetivo do Jogo))

In Overdrive: A Batalha do Rock, your goal is to become the best band of all time by earning the greatest number of victory points at the end of the game.

Let the Show Begin (O Jogo)

Overdrive: A Batalha do Rock is played over eight rounds divided into three phases: the allocation phase, the Battle of Bands (only in rounds 3 and 6) and the Final Battle (only in round 8). At the end of round 8, the points are counted and the great winner of the multiverse's battle of rock emerges!

Allocation Phase (Fase de Alocação)

At the start of the game, each player has four dice available. These dice are used in the allocation phase to perform actions, evolve their band, buy Hits, among other things.

Starting with the first player, each player on their turn must collect all of their dice from the board, roll them and allocate them to the available spaces (spaces with no dice on them, except Resources, which may receive any number of dice), executing their effect. If the dice are allocated to more than one space, the effects may be executed in any order.

At the end of the allocation phase of rounds 3, 6 and 8, players remove all of their dice from the board, clearing it.

An allocation space must contain the required number of dice. Partial allocation is not possible, i.e. you cannot leave dice allocated for a following round.

Battle of Bands Phase (Fase de Batalha de Bandas)

We are in a multiverse, and it would be utopian to think that such distinct species and creatures would live in perfect harmony. Because of this, the mysterious entity Metallum determined that the best way was to use Rock and Roll instead of weapons. So lower your weapons and raise your guitars, drumsticks and microphones, because the battle of bands is about to begin.

"When it comes time to see, only the original line-up takes the stage!"

In rounds 3 and 6, at the end of the allocation phase, the Battle of Bands phase occurs. The player with the highest Fame level receives the first player marker and begins the battle. They may remove one die from an opponent of their choice, provided that opponent has fewer faces of that type than they do.

In other words, the "attacker" must always have more faces of the same symbol than the target player.

Then, clockwise, the next player performs the same steps if they can, i.e. if they have more faces of the same symbol than another player.

All players then collect all their dice from the board and roll only four of them simultaneously.

The Battle of Bands ends when all players have removed a die from an opponent or passed their turn.

Example: Ozzy is the first player of the battle. He rolled the following faces: Skull, Skull, Influence and Chord. He decides to attack Hendrix, who has the following faces: Skull, Influence, Chord, Chord. Because Ozzy has more Skulls than his target, Hendrix must remove a die showing the Skull face.

Details of the Battle of Bands. On your turn as an attacker, players may use their Grana at any time, and as many times as they like, to:

a) -1 Grana: re-roll as many dice as you like;

b) -5 Grana: choose the face of a die.

It is possible that a player cannot cancel any face of any opponent. In that case, they simply pass their turn to the next player.

The last die of a player cannot be removed. At the start of the Battle of Bands, right after the roll and before the attacks, all players who have reached Fame level 5 may choose one of their dice to protect (shield icon). This die becomes immune to attacks from opponents.

Dice removed in the Battle of Bands return to their players only at the start of the next allocation phase.

Dice that survive the battle have their faces converted into bonuses.

Dice Face Bonuses (Bônus das Faces dos Dados):

  • Skull face: +3 Grana
  • Chord face: +1 Fans
  • Horns Up face: +1 Overdrive
  • Influence face: +1 Fame

Final Battle (Batalha Final, round 8)

During the Final Battle, the result of the Battle of Bands is a little different. The procedure is the same as in rounds 3 and 6, but the faces that remain do not give bonuses any more. This time, they are converted into faces for the symbol collection, which will be used in the final scoring.

End of a Round (Fim de Uma Rodada)

After all players have allocated their dice (or at the end of the Battles of Bands in rounds 3 and 6), advance the round marker. In the case of round 8, the game has come to an end and it is time to count the score.

End of the Tour (Fim da Turnê, End of Game)

The game ends after the Final Battle, at the end of the eighth round. It is time to find out which is the most talented band in the multiverse. In Overdrive: A Batalha do Rock there is only one winner, and he is the player with the greatest number of victory points, becoming the greatest band of the whole multiverse!

Scoring (Formas de Pontuar)

Your score (victory points) is defined by the attributes you evolved, abilities unlocked, Hits bought, awards won and symbol collections formed.

  • Fans and Fame: 1 point per level of each.
  • Overdrive: 1 to 5 points according to your Overdrive level.
  • Special Overdrive: according to unlocked abilities.
  • Hits: 1 point for each card bought.
  • Awards: the points printed on the awards won.
  • Symbol collections: points for the collections formed (see below).

Tiebreak criteria: Fame > Fans > Grana > Overdrive.

Symbol Collection (Coleção de Símbolos)

There is an additional score that is activated when a player collects a minimum of 3 identical symbols or 3 different ones. These symbols are the same symbols found on the die faces, and are found on Hit cards, band sheets and the remaining dice of the Final Battle.

  • Each band starts with one symbol on its sheet and may gain an additional symbol when it reaches Fans level 5.
  • A combination of three identical symbols is worth 3 victory points, and each additional identical symbol adds 1 point.
  • Three different symbols are worth 3 victory points, and four different symbols are worth 4 victory points.
  • There is no limit to scoring with identical symbols.
  • Each collection of different symbols grants a maximum of 4 victory points.
  • Symbols are scored only once per collection; a symbol that scored in one collection cannot be used to score another.

Rock School (Escola do Rock, Effect Details)

Overdrive: A Batalha do Rock is an iconographic game. The effects of the allocation spaces and Hit cards are described below in alphabetical order to make them easier to understand.

Hey! Ho! Let's Go!

Board Spaces (Tabuleiro)

  • Acoustic: only for 3 or more players. Allocate four dice with any faces. Choose one track (Fans, Fame or Overdrive) to raise one level.
  • Appearance (Apresentação): allocate one die with the Chord face and two other dice of any face, and gain one level of Fans.
  • Interview (Entrevista): allocate one die with the Influence face and two other dice of any face, and gain one level of Fame.
  • Rehearsal (Ensaio): allocate one die with the Horns Up face and two other dice of any face, and gain one level of Overdrive.
  • Improvisation (Improviso): two allocations are possible here. Allocate one die with the Skull face and change the face of one of your dice not yet allocated to a Horns Up or Influence face. Can be occupied by dice of different bands.
  • Jam Session: allocate one die with the Skull face and use a die already allocated by an opponent as if it were your own (the face cannot be modified).
  • New Riff (Novo RIFF): two allocations are possible here. Allocate one die with the Skull face and change the face of one die not yet allocated to a Chord symbol. Can be occupied by dice of different bands.
  • New Member (Novo Integrante): spend 2 Grana and allocate three dice, with the Skull, Influence and Horns Up faces, and gain one extra die. It is possible to have up to two extra dice during the game. Once this action is performed, the extra die may be rolled and used in the same round.
  • Opportunity (Oportunidade): only with 3 or more players. Allocate one die with the Skull face and remove the dice from an already occupied space (including Hit cards). Return the dice to their respective owners.

Hit Cards (Cartas de Hits)

Initially, Hit cards are allocation spaces like the spaces of the central board. However, these cards may be bought by players. When this happens, the player who acquired the card must bring it into their play area and choose a space on the card to cancel permanently, making allocation easier. All players may allocate dice to this card, but when an opponent does so, the owner gains the resource printed on it, minus 1.

  • All Along The Dice Tower: allocate 3 dice with the Chord face to receive 2 Fans points. 1 Chord symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Back In Box: allocate 2 dice with the Influence face and 1 die with any face to receive 2 Fame points. 1 Influence symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Born To Be Wild Card: allocate 4 dice with the Chord face to receive 3 Fans points. 1 Chord symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Crazy Ticket: allocate 2 dice with the Chord face and 2 dice with any faces to receive 2 Fans points. 1 Chord symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Cube Pusher: allocate 2 dice with the Horns Up face and 1 die with any face to receive 2 Overdrive points. 1 Horns Up symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Day Filler: this card may be used in two ways. In one, allocate one die with the Skull face and receive 2 Grana. In the other, allocate 2 dice with the Skull face and receive 3 Grana. 1 Skull symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Dr. Feld Good: allocate 2 dice with the Chord face and 2 dice with the Skull face to receive 2 Fans points and 2 Grana. If another player uses this card, the owner gains 1 Grana and 1 Fan. 1 Skull symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Highway to Ride: allocate 3 dice with the Influence face to receive 3 Fame points. 1 Influence symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Iron Meeple: allocate 2 dice with the Influence face and 2 dice with any faces to receive 3 Fame points. 1 Influence symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Mini Lover: allocate 3 dice with the Horns Up face to receive 3 Overdrive points. 1 Horns Up symbol for your symbol collection.

Metallum (the robot boss, used in solo and cooperative play) is described in the variants below.

Variants (Variantes de Jogo)

Solo Mode: Metallum (Variante Solo)

Setup (Preparação)

  • The band "Cover Bots" may not be used in solo mode.
  • Separate the Metallum sheet and place the attribute markers at zero, on level 2.
  • Metallum is the first player.
  • Cancel the Jam Session, Acoustic and Intimidation spaces.
  • Choose the difficulty:
DifficultyDice Metallum rolls
Poser1 die
Moleza2 dice
Normal3 dice
Hardcore4 dice
Brutal5 dice
Metalgeddon6 dice

Rules

The rules for the player are the same as the basic game. On Metallum's turn, roll the number of dice corresponding to the difficulty chosen for the game. Metallum never allocates dice; it simply gains bonuses from the dice roll.

On Metallum's turn, if it has enough Grana after the dice roll, it always buys the most expensive Hit card available. If it has resources to buy a Distortion card, it buys a face-down card from the top of the pile (at the current cost of the available cards). If it has Grana to buy both a Hit card and a Distortion card, it buys both (in this order).

The player may use Metallum's Hit card normally; Metallum gains the bonuses as if it were a human player.

At the end of the roll, if Metallum has the resources to gain an award, it takes it normally.

Battle of Bands

In the Battle of Bands phase, Metallum rolls the dice according to the chosen difficulty. It always cancels the rarest faces of the players (Horns Up or Influence). In case of a tie, the human player chooses.

End of Game

The player must score more points than Metallum to win the game.

Cooperative Mode: Metallum (Variante Cooperativa)

Follow the solo mode rules with small changes.

The Jam Session space is freed up for the human players, but human players may never use a die of Metallum.

End of Game

At the end of the game, the players add their final scores together and divide by the number of players (rounded down). To win, this value must be greater than Metallum's score.

Speed Metal Variant (Jogo Curto)

In this variant, the game time can be reduced by eliminating rounds 5 and 6 (place a cancel token on these rounds).

In this mode, there is only one Battle of Bands and one Final Battle. This variant is not recommended for two-player games.

Hall of Fame Variant

In this variant, the order of the Battles of Bands and the Final Battle is defined by the order of Fame level (and not clockwise), considering any tiebreaks.

Free Falling Variant

In this variant, the board is cleared at the end of each round and the first player marker is passed to the player with the most Fame.

With this variant, the Jam Session space must be cancelled.

  • Resources (Recursos): allocate as many dice as you want, regardless of face or whether other players' dice are already on this space. Gain 1 Grana for each die allocated. There is no limit to the number of dice that may be allocated here. Dice of different players may share this space.
  • Play And Joy: allocate 2 dice with the Horns Up face and 2 dice with any faces to receive 3 Overdrive points. 1 Horns Up symbol for your symbol collection.
  • Piece of Puzzle: allocate 4 dice with the Chord face and 1 die with any face to receive 4 Fans points. 1 Chord symbol for your symbol collection.
