Goal
Lay your island tiles and thus discover the numerous Orkney Islands. In doing so you receive resources with which you build farms, villages and castles. In addition you secure trade routes, go fishing and try to fulfil your secret task. Whoever has the most victory points at the end of the game wins.
Setup
- Everyone chooses a ship. Lay out the scoring board and place your ship on the start space.
- Each person receives all the trade routes of their ship colour.
- Fit the three starting tiles (green back) together in the middle of the table as shown.
- Shuffle the remaining island tiles face down and distribute them equally among everyone. When playing with four, four tiles are removed at random before the start of the game and put back into the box.
- Place the buildings and resource tokens within reach.
- Shuffle the fish tokens and place them to the side with the fish side face up. The numbers are secret.
- Shuffle the task tiles face down and give each person two. Everyone secretly chooses one task and puts the other back into the box.
- Whoever was most recently in Scotland begins the game. Otherwise the person whose last holiday was closest to the coast of Scotland starts.
Course of Play
A turn consists of the following actions:
If it is your turn, you must lay two new island tiles.
After that you can carry out these possible actions in any order and as often as you like:
- Build and lay a trade route
- Exchange resources
- Lay additional trade routes
- Fish
The actions in detail.
Laying Two New Island Tiles
You all lay tiles together onto the island layout already in the middle of the table. Take two of your island tiles. You may look at the first tile. After you have laid it onto the layout already placed, you may look at the second tile and place it as well.
Placement Rules
- The tile must be placed with at least one side adjacent to the existing island layout.
- Land must border land, sea must border sea (a pure sea-to-sea placement is permitted).
- Since there are no island tiles consisting only of land, you may not freely lay tiles with large land areas (over two corners) next to each other. After laying, the land areas of the large island pieces must lie opposite each other, so they may not be laid sideways next to each other. Laying sideways next to small elements is permitted.
- On every placed tile that shows a fish, you place a fish token. The fish must be visible; the number on its back is secret.
- Tiles that have already been placed may not be changed.
Receiving Resources
There are three kinds of resources: wood, stone and cloth.
If you place a tile so that a resource shown on it is already present on the island, you receive 2 pieces of the matching resource.
The number of resources already visible there does not matter. Resource tokens are not placed on the islands; you take the tokens from the supply and put them in front of you.
If you do not place next to any already existing resources, you receive nothing.
Resources are unlimited – if tokens run out, use any substitute tokens.
Completing an Island
If you complete an island by placing a tile, you receive 1 cloth.
Islands count as completed when they are completely surrounded by sea, and they always consist of 3 or 4 tiles.
If you complete two islands at the same time, you receive 2 cloth.
Building and Laying a Trade Route
If you have enough resources, you can erect buildings. Only completed islands may be built on.
Cost of the Buildings
- Farm: 1 wood, 1 stone
- Village: 2 wood, 2 stone
- Castle: 3 wood, 3 stone
You put the resources back into the general supply.
Space Requirements
- Farm: at least 2 tiles (on a large island 2 farms can stand)
- Village: at least 3 tiles
- Castle: 4 tiles (only possible on large islands)
Per turn you may erect as many buildings as you like. You can also build on the starting island. If no buildings of a certain kind are left, you can no longer build them.
For every building erected there are the following victory points, which you immediately move with your ship on the scoring board:
- Farm: 1 victory point
- Village: 3 victory points
- Castle: 6 victory points
Trade Routes
For each building you erected this turn you may lay one trade route.
It must border the island on which you built.
Every connection (white line) may only be occupied once.
Connections to uncompleted islands are permitted.
Trade routes are scored during the final scoring.
Exchanging Resources
You can exchange 2 cloth for 1 other resource. In addition you can exchange 3 wood or 3 stone for 1 other resource. All exchange actions are permitted as often as you like.
- 2 cloth -> 1 wood/stone
- 3 stone -> 1 cloth/wood
- 3 wood -> 1 cloth/stone
Laying Additional Trade Routes
For every 2 cloth you may lay an additional trade route on any free connection – this is in addition to the routes from building. You put the resources back into the general supply.
Fishing
For 2 cloth that you give back to the supply you may go fishing.
In doing so you collect all fish tokens lying out so far, look at the numbers on their backs in secret and lay them in front of you with the fish side face up. The free fish spaces on the island tiles are not refilled. New fish are only placed when a new tile with a fish is laid.
End
The game ends when the last island tiles have been placed and the active person has carried out their turn. The final scoring follows.
Final Scoring
All victory points are recorded on the scoring board. If you exceed 29 or 59 points, take the score marker in your colour for marking.
At the end there are victory points for the following:
Tasks
Reveal the tasks and score them.
For fulfilled goals you receive the stated victory points.
Trade Routes
Farms supply villages and castles with food. For every farm that is directly connected to a village by a trade route of your own, there is 1 victory point. For every trade route connection farm – castle there are 2 victory points.
- Farm -> Village: 1 victory point
- Farm -> Castle: 2 victory points
Every farm can score multiple times.
If two farms stand on one island and both are connected to a village and/or a castle, both are scored.
Connections village–village, castle–castle or village–castle bring no points.
Tip: It is clearer if you take the trade connections directly off the board as soon as you have transferred their points to the scoring board.
Fish
Turn your collected fish to the number side and add up the values. Every 3 fish points are worth 1 victory point.
The person with the most points wins!
Tie
In case of a tie you compare the following among the persons concerned:
- Who has completely fulfilled their own task (receiving 6 points)? If this applies to only one of the leading persons, they win.
- If nobody has completely fulfilled their task: who has fulfilled their own task by half (receiving 3 points)? This is only possible with tasks 7-11 (see overview on page 7).
- If still tied: who has more resources left over?
If there is still a tie, you share the victory.
