Playing a Card
When you play a card, declare the number on the card you play added to the total of the cards already played.
Examples from the manual: If the previous player played a "7" and you play a "3" on top of it, you declare "10." If the next player then plays a "6" on top of that, they declare "16."
Setup
- Decide on the dealer first, then shuffle the cards.
- The dealer deals 4 cards face down to each player.
- Place the remaining cards face down in a pile in the middle of the table. New cards are drawn from this pile.
How to Play
-
Play begins with the player to the left of the dealer. Choose 1 card from your hand and place it face up next to the draw pile. Declare the total (the number on the card plus the running total), then draw a new card. Then the next player takes their turn.
Example from the manual: With a "5" on the table, a player plays a "10" and declares "5 + 10 = 15!"
-
The next player likewise plays 1 card from their hand. They declare the total of the running total and the number on the card they play, then draw a new card.
Example from the manual: With a running total of 94, a player holding a "5" cannot play it, because 94 + 5 = 99. They must play a different card.
-
Play continues in the same way for each following player.
A player who has no card in hand that can be played without the total reaching 99 or more leaves the game. The last player remaining is the winner.
Hints
- When a player leaves the game, they place all of their hand cards face down. The other players skip that player and continue the game.
- If the total reaches 99 or more and nobody can play a card, the player who played the last card before that is the winner.
- When the draw pile runs out, shuffle the played-card pile and turn it into a new draw pile.
- If the total becomes negative, it is treated as zero. For example, if the total is 7 and a "-10" card is played on top of it, do not declare "-3." Declare "0."
- Even when the total does not change, you must always declare the total when playing a card.
Special Cards
99 Card (Ono Card)
- This card cannot be played until all 4 copies have been collected. Once you have all 4, on your next turn you exchange all 4 at once for new cards, and then the next player's turn begins.
Reverse Card
- When this card is played, the direction of play reverses: play that was going counterclockwise goes clockwise, and play that was going clockwise goes counterclockwise.
- Playing this card does not change the total, but you must still declare the total.
Minus 10 Card
- Subtract 10 from the sum of the numbers.
Play 2 Card
- The next player may be forced to play 2 cards. The next player takes a normal turn twice in a row.
- A player who is forced to play this card may strike back by playing a "Reverse" card. A player may also pass the effect on to the next player by playing their own "Play 2" card. In that case the next player must play 2 cards; the two Play 2 cards do not need to stack to make 4.
- When a player leaves the game, the next player does not have to take over the Play 2 card.
- Playing this card does not change the total, but you must still declare the total.
