How do Dodge and Kiting work?

Dodge lets you ignore one heart icon when you suffer consequences, and does not cover stair damage. Kiting activates when the encounter's total consequences include exactly one heart (with any time or poison alongside); per a community reply it cannot stop effects that happen before the encounter.
