Did later rulebook versions (1.5, 1.6, 1.8) change how the game plays?

No — from 1.5 onward the gameplay is the same. Version 1.6 only fixed typos and graphics and reorganized the rulebook, and later printings mostly changed components (for example plastic hearts and potion tokens).
