What do I need for a four-player game, and how are dice supplied?
The rulebook requires two sets and splits the supply for the pairs.

Two sets (two base boxes, or base plus an expansion). Each pair of heroes gets its own full set of dice (8 of each color, 6 heroic) and the general supply holds 12 potion tokens; a second set does not add dice to one pair. Playing four players with a single box is not supported.
