Setup
-
Place the Saloon tile in the centre of the play area. Depending on the number of players, place the following locations vertically above the Saloon, in any order:
- 2 players: Shop and Bank.
- 3 players: Bank and Ranch.
- 4 players: Shop, Bank and Mine.
- 5 players: Shop, Bank, Ranch and Mine.
Return unused tiles to the box.
-
Each person receives 2 coins and 1 bottle. All Resource tokens you own during the game are kept face down, but you may look at only your own at any time.
-
Create a supply within everyone's reach with all the coins, and the corresponding Elixir and Resource tokens:
- 2 players: 4 supplies, 4 wads of banknotes and 4 bottles,
- 3 players: 3 wads of banknotes, 3 cattle and 3 bottles,
- 4 players: 3 supplies, 3 wads of banknotes, 3 gold nuggets and 3 bottles,
- 5 players: 3 supplies, 3 wads of banknotes, 3 cattle, 3 gold nuggets and 3 bottles.
Return unused tokens to the box.
-
Return to the box the Character cards corresponding to unused Location tiles:
- 2 players: Farmer, Cowboy, Miner and Prospector,
- 3 players: Kid, Seller, Miner and Prospector,
- 4 players: Farmer and Cowboy,
- 5 players: remove no Character.
Object of the Game
Your goal is to have the most money at the end of the game, through your coins and your Resource tokens.
Game Turn
The game is played over 3 rounds (4 rounds in a 2-player game). Each round has 4 phases:
- Upkeep
- Distribution
- Saloon
- End of round
1. Upkeep
Each Location tile has a Resource token icon at the bottom left. Place 1 face-up token of the corresponding resource to the left of each Location tile. If the Location tile also has coin icons, also put that many coins to the left of that location.
Note: Resource tokens and coins not collected in the previous round are not removed but accumulate with those of the new round.
Remove the first two Character cards from the draw pile. Put 1 face up and 1 face down next to the play area. These cards will not be used during this round.
Note: if the face-up card is the Goat, draw 1 new card face up instead and reshuffle the Goat into the draw pile.
2. Distribution
The Dealer takes 4 cards from the draw pile into hand, without showing them to opponents. After looking at them, the Dealer must offer 1 Character card to 1 opponent, by placing it face down in front of that person (see "Inactive and active persons" below).
The Dealer must declare what they are offering. Example: "Do you want to do the action of the Outlaw?" The character in question must be 1 of the 4 cards in the Dealer's hand, but not necessarily the one given to the opponent. It is therefore allowed to lie about the Character card offered!
Without looking at the card, the opponent receiving the offer may decide whether or not to accept the offered Character card.
- If the Character card is accepted, the opponent reveals the card and places 1 of their small hats on it to show that this card belongs to them.
- If the Character card is refused, the Dealer reveals the card and places 1 of their small hats on it to show that this card belongs to them.
The Character card is then placed to the right of the corresponding location. The icons at the bottom of each location and the background colour of the card serve as a reminder.
Exception: the Goat is placed below the Saloon since it has no corresponding location.
If the character has an instant effect, it is resolved immediately (see the list of Character card effects on page 10 onward, reproduced below).
New Dealer
Once the offer is resolved, the Dealer passes their 3 remaining Character cards to the next active person, clockwise. That person becomes the new Dealer.
After receiving the Character cards, the Dealer draws 1 card so as to again have 4 Character cards in hand. It is their turn to offer a Character card to an opponent, repeating the procedure described above.
Inactive person
When a person places their 2nd small hat on a Character card, to show that it belongs to them (their 3rd small hat in a 2-player game), that person must turn their large hat to the grey side to indicate that they are now inactive. They can no longer be the Dealer, nor receive a Character card, for the rest of the round.
Last active person
When only 1 active person remains, all the inactive persons can at that moment be Dealer again. However, the last active person can no longer be the Dealer.
As before, the Dealer passes their remaining Character cards to the next person clockwise, except the last active person.
This new Dealer must take all the remaining cards from the draw pile and add them to their hand, in addition to the 3 Character cards received. There is therefore no more need to draw until the end of the round, since all the Character cards are now in the Dealers' hands.
Note: the number of cards remaining in the draw pile depends on the number of small hats of the last active person and on the number of people in the game. It can range from 1 to 3 Character cards.
The Dealer offers 1 Character card from their hand, but this time only to the last active person, the one who has not yet used all their small hats.
- If the Character card is accepted, the last active person reveals the card and places 1 of their small hats on it to show that this card belongs to them.
- If the Character card is refused, the card is revealed and then discarded.
Once the offer is resolved, proceed as usual for the change of Dealer. The Dealers must keep offering Character cards to the last active person until they have no small hats left.
Note: if the number of small hats remaining to the last active person is equal to the number of Character cards in the Dealer's hand before an offer, they must accept these Character cards.
3. Saloon
Once the Distribution phase is finished, the characters at the Saloon must activate their effects. These characters are activated in ascending order. Their numbers are shown at the top right of each Character card. The order of effects is therefore: Outlaw, Sheriff, Thief, Charlatan, Waitress, Gambler. Some characters may not be present; the ascending order of activation is nevertheless maintained.
The effect is resolved by the person who controls the Character card.
4. End of Round
If this is the last round, go directly to the end of the game. Otherwise, follow these steps:
- Each person takes back their small hats and turns their large hat back to the coloured side.
- Return the Elixir tokens to the supply.
- Shuffle all the Character cards to form a new draw pile. Do not forget to retrieve the 2 Character cards set aside during Upkeep.
- Play a new round. The last active person becomes the first Dealer of this new round.
End of the Game
The game ends after the Saloon phase of the 3rd round (4th round in a 2-player game).
The person with the most money, coins and values of Resource tokens combined, wins.
In case of a tie, the person with the most coins wins. If the tie persists, the person with the most Resource tokens wins. If the tie still persists, the tied persons share the victory.
Examples
Example 1: Pedro is the Dealer and has the following cards in hand: Farmer, Goat, Charlatan and Sheriff. Pedro offers a card to Arthur, telling him it is the Sheriff (1). The Sheriff is not a good option at that moment because the Outlaw is already in play (belonging to Georges) and the Sheriff would be killed before even applying his effect. Arthur therefore refuses the offer. Pedro takes the card back and reveals it. It was actually the Farmer (2). Pedro places one of his small hats on this card and places it next to the Ranch (3). Its effect applies immediately. Pedro takes all the tokens present at the Ranch, so he takes 2 cattle.
Example 2: Pedro passes the 3 cards in his hand to Silvia, who becomes the new Dealer. Silvia draws 1 card to again have a hand of 4 Character cards and offers a card to Pedro, telling him it is the Goat (1). Pedro saw the cards on the previous turn and thinks Silvia is bluffing and that it is actually a good card she wants to keep. Pedro accepts the card and discovers that Silvia was telling the truth (2). Pedro places one of his small hats on this card and places it below the Saloon (3). The Goat has no effect, to Pedro's great disappointment, making him lose 1 action...
Example 3: During the Saloon phase, there are 4 cards: the Outlaw (belonging to Georges), the Sheriff (Silvia), the Thief (Arthur) and the Waitress (Arthur). The first card to be resolved is the Outlaw. Its power is to kill the Sheriff. Since the latter is in play, its power applies and Georges receives 4 coins (1). Next, it would have been the Sheriff's turn to use his power but he was killed by the Outlaw. Therefore he does not perform his power; that is 1 action lost for Silvia (2). Then comes the effect of the Thief, who has 1 gold nugget stolen from the Mine. Since he was not stopped by the Sheriff, because the latter was killed, Arthur takes the token and adds it face down to his supply (3). Finally comes the effect of the Waitress. Since there is no Gambler, Arthur must simply take all the bottles from the Saloon and give them to his opponents, to his great dismay (4). He decides not to distribute them equally but to give the 2 bottles to Silvia.
Character Effects
Below is a list of all the characters and their effects. All effects must be carried out even if they are sometimes to your disadvantage. There are 2 categories:
Instant effect: applied immediately when the Character card is placed next to the corresponding Location tile.
Saloon effect: applied during the Saloon phase, in ascending order. Their numbers are shown at the top right of each Character card.
Note: the Thief and the Charlatan have both an instant effect and a Saloon effect. The instant effect lets them steal, but they can keep their loot only if they are not stopped during the Saloon phase.
Seller, Banker, Farmer and Miner
Instant effect: take all the Resource tokens from the corresponding Location tile and put them face down in your personal supply. If the location has no more Resource tokens, tough luck, you receive nothing.
Kid, Widow, Cowboy and Prospector
Instant effect: take all the coins from the corresponding Location tile and add them to your personal supply. If the location has no more coins, too bad.
Outlaw
Saloon effect: if the Sheriff is in play, kill him (discard him), take 4 coins from the supply and add them to your personal supply. If the Sheriff is not in play, nothing happens; that is 1 action lost...
Sheriff
Saloon effect: take 2 coins from the supply and add them to your personal supply.
If the Thief is in play, stop him (discard him), take 2 additional coins from the supply and add them to your personal supply. Put the stolen Resource tokens back on the corresponding Location tiles.
If the Charlatan is in play, stop him (discard him), take 1 additional coin from the supply and add it to your personal supply. Give the stolen coins back to their respective owners, those who have Elixir tokens.
If the Outlaw is in play, you were killed before you could act. The Thief and the Charlatan are therefore not stopped.
Thief
Instant effect: choose 1 location, except the Saloon. Take all the Resource tokens from the Location tile in question and put them on the Thief.
Note: the Thief is placed next to the Saloon and not next to the location stolen from.
If no location has Resource tokens, nothing happens.
Saloon effect: if the Sheriff has not stopped you, add the stolen resources face down to your personal supply. If the Sheriff stopped you, put the stolen resources back on the corresponding Location tile.
Charlatan
Instant effect: take a total of 3 coins from your opponents as you see fit (3 coins from the same person, 2 coins from 1 opponent and 1 coin from a 2nd opponent, or 1 coin from 3 different opponents) and put them on the Charlatan. These opponents tricked by the Charlatan receive 1 Elixir token for each coin lost.
If no opponent has any coins, tough luck, you fool no one.
Saloon effect: if the Sheriff has not stopped you, add these coins to your personal supply. If the Sheriff stopped you, give these coins back to their owners. The Elixir tokens only serve to remember who was tricked by the Charlatan and for how many coins. In both cases, then return the Elixir tokens to the supply.
Waitress
Saloon effect: take all the bottles from the Saloon and distribute them as you see fit to your opponents, and you receive nothing. It's your round!
If the Gambler is in play, also perform his action in his place! The latter will therefore not do his action.
Gambler
Saloon effect: choose 1 opponent, take 1 Resource token at random from their personal supply and add it face down to your personal supply.
If the Waitress is in play, she performed your action in your place. You lost your action.
If no opponent has any Resource tokens, you take nothing.
Goat
No effect. It's just a goat...
Promo Card: the Chef
Rules from the separate one-page sheet "Carte promotionnelle : le Chef".
Changes to the Rules
During step 5 of Setup, shuffle the Chef into the draw pile with the other Character cards.
In Phase 1, during Upkeep, when removing Character cards from the draw pile, remove 3 cards instead of 2: 2 face down and 1 face up.
Note: if the face-up card is the Goat, draw 1 new card face up instead and reshuffle the Goat into the draw pile.
New Character Effect
The Chef introduces a new type of effect, the late effect. This type of effect is indicated by its own icon and is activated after the Saloon phase, once all the characters at the Saloon have resolved their effects, and before the end of the round.
Chef
Unlike the other characters, the Chef has no corresponding location. Once revealed, the person who received this card places it to the right of the location of their choice, except the Saloon.
Late effect: take all the Resource tokens OR all the coins from the corresponding Location tile and add them to your personal supply. If they are Resource tokens, put them face down in your personal supply.
If the location has no more Resource tokens, nor coins, you take nothing.
