Components

  • 1 board
  • 80 double-sided movie title cards
  • 42 double-sided review cards
  • 7 voting discs
  • 7 "Not That Movie!" tokens (one side coloured, the other grey)
  • This rulebook

Setup

  1. Place the board in the center of the table.
  2. Shuffle the movie title cards (either side up), then lay out 5 randomly chosen cards, with both sides visible, next to the board. For each number shown on the board, place 2 cards. Stack the remaining cards as a deck next to the board.
  3. Shuffle the review cards face down and make a pile under the board (the area marked in purple). Then take roughly half of the pile off the top and place it, blue side up, to the left of the purple pile (the area marked in blue).
  4. Each player takes 1 voting disc. Put the unused discs back in the box - they are not needed this game. (Assemble the discs from their two parts using the special stickers; make sure the colors of the two parts match.)
  5. Stack the "Not That Movie!" tokens, colored side up. The player who most recently went to the cinema gets this stack.
  6. Keep the rulebook handy - you will record your results on the last page at the end of each round.

Gameplay

"Not That Movie!" is a cooperative game in which all players play on one team, trying to score as many points as possible.

Each number from 1 to 8 shown on the board corresponds to a separate cinema screen, on which a film with an unexpected title is being shown. The title is made of two parts: the first part of the title is given in the lower half of the upper card, and the second part in the upper half of the card located below it (see the picture).

Example: on the screen under number 1 the film "Escape of Horrors" is showing, on the screen under number 2 "Summer Corner Shop", and so on. The positive review (blue card) for this round says: "This picture takes its place of honor on the pedestal as the best sports film." The negative review (purple card) in this round reads: "Of all the films one could be inspired by to ask: zombies, why THIS one?"

Read aloud the reviews from the cards lying under the board. The blue review cards are always positive, and the purple ones are always negative.

Each player secretly chooses the title that, in their opinion, best fits both reviews at the same time. The player then sets the corresponding number on their voting disc and places the disc face down in front of themselves.

Example: Anya voted for the title "Frankenstein's Fever", Misha for the title "Escape of Horrors". Both players think they chose a sports film in which a zombie appears.

Now the player with the stack of "Not That Movie!" tokens takes a token from the stack and places it, colored side up, on the title which, in their opinion, nobody voted for.

Two possible outcomes

No player was right. None of the players voted for the chosen title (the players confirm this by not showing their voting discs). In this case the player passes the stack of tokens to their neighbor on the left, and that player now chooses a new title and places a "Not That Movie!" token on it (and so on).

A player was wrong! At least one player voted for the chosen title: all players who voted for that title show their discs, and only that. The placed token is turned over to its grey side. If this is your first mistake, nothing happens and you continue the game. If this is already the second mistake in this round, the round ends (see "End of the Round").

End of the Round

The round ends in one of two cases:

  1. Players have placed all 7 "Not That Movie!" tokens.
  2. Players have turned the second "Not That Movie!" token grey side up.

Now you can show your voting discs and discuss your choices with the other players!

Record on the table on the last page of the rules 1 point for each "Not That Movie!" token lying colored side up. If you correctly placed all 7 tokens, you also get 1 bonus point (8 points in total).

Put all the "Not That Movie!" tokens back in the stack, colored side up. Discard the title cards used in the previous round, then take 10 new cards from the deck and lay them out on both sides of the board (see "Setup"). Take the top purple review card, turn it over to its blue side, and put it on top of the blue pile: now you have two new reviews in front of you. A new round begins with the player who placed the last "Not That Movie!" token in the previous round: they take the stack of tokens and put it in front of themselves.

End of the Game

The game ends after the fifth round. Add up the points from all rounds to find out your result. Will you be able to score enough points to earn an "Oscar"?

Score Sheet

The last page of the rules is a score table (note: use a pencil, or make a copy of this page). After each round, record the following: date, number of players, team name, points for each of rounds 1 to 5, and the total (with a 5-star rating).

Rules for 2 Players

The game proceeds by the same rules with the following changes:

  • During setup, each player receives 2 voting discs. Also put 1 "Not That Movie!" token back in the box: you will not need it.
  • In each round, each player chooses 2 titles at once that best match the revealed reviews. You cannot choose the same title on both discs.
  • The round ends as soon as the players have placed all 6 tokens or made a second mistake. If you placed all 6 tokens and made no mistakes, you get 2 bonus points (8 points in total).
