Game Objective

Hide your Daughters and Riches in Locations around Bergen to protect them from the Troll. You can drive off the Troll by using the Mistletoe card, or slip away by making use of the Night Watch cards. The player who best protects their Daughters and Riches will earn the most points and win the game.

Types of Cards

The cards may be broadly divided into two types.

Location Cards

The number in the upper right corner of the card indicates the Location's capacity. Once this capacity has been reached, no more cards may be played in that Location. This rule takes priority over the effect of a Night Watch card. Look at the backs of the Location Cards to find the ones you need. For example, when playing with three players, use all of the core Locations, plus the ones that say "3 OR MORE PLAYERS."

  • Always use these four Locations: Lamp Shop (capacity 5), Church (6), Library (7), Old Castle (8).
  • Add these two Locations when playing with 3 or more players: Tower (6) and Palace (7).
  • Add these two Locations when playing with 4 players: Bar (5) and Black Forest (8).

Player Cards

These cards are played onto Location Cards. The number in the upper left corner of the card indicates its value in victory points. If the card has an icon in its upper right corner, that card must be played face down. Each deck contains these 13 cards: 1 Troll, 1 Mistletoe, 2 Riches, 7 Daughter, and 2 Night Watch cards.

Troll (-2 victory points; face down)

Play Troll cards face down. During Scoring, discard all cards on a Location where a Troll card is present, including the Troll; none of these cards score points.

Mistletoe (1 victory point; face down)

Play Mistletoe cards face down. During Scoring, if there is a Troll card on the same Location as a Mistletoe card, the Troll's effect is negated, and its owner scores its victory point value. If no Trolls are present, discard the Mistletoe; it does not score any points. If the number of Troll cards exceeds the number of Mistletoe cards in a given Location, the Troll's effect is resolved as normal.

Riches (2 victory points; face down)

Play Riches cards face down. Add its victory point value to its owner's score during Scoring.

Daughter (1 victory point; face up)

Play Daughter cards face up. Add its victory point value to its owner's score during Scoring.

Night Watch (face up)

Play Night Watch cards face up. When you play it, you may either:

  • Move one of your previously played cards from another Location Card to the one on which you just played Night Watch,
  • Or move another player's card on the Location Card on which you just played Night Watch to a different Location Card.

However, you may not exceed the capacity of a Location Card when moving a card. Add this card's victory point value to its owner's score during Scoring.

Set Up

  1. Lay out the Location Cards based on the number of players.
  2. Each player chooses a deck and shuffles it thoroughly.
  3. Each player draws three cards from the top of their deck to form their starting hand. If a player draws two Night Watch cards, they may reveal their hand to the other players, return the hand to their deck, reshuffle it, and draw a new hand of three cards.
  4. Determine the starting player by using dice or another agreed upon method.

Starting Set Up (for a two player game)

Each player has their deck; the four core Locations (Lamp Shop, Church, Library, Old Castle) are laid out between them.

Turn Order

On your turn, choose two cards from your hand and play them onto any open Location Card. You may play both cards onto the same Location Card, or play each card on a different Location Card. However, you may not exceed the capacity of a Location Card. In order to tell how many cards have been played on a Location Card, keep the cards spread out slightly. Night Watch is the only card that has an effect when it is placed. To conclude your turn, draw two cards from your deck for a hand of three cards. Play moves clockwise until players have played all cards in their decks. In the last round, players will not draw cards. They will play the last card they have in their hand.

Scoring

Start with the Location Card with the lowest capacity. All cards on the Location Card are turned face up. Score is calculated in the following order:

  1. The player who has the most cards on the Location Card receives that Location Card. If multiple players are tied for having the most cards, the Location Card is discarded. Location Cards are not worth points, but they serve to determine the winner in the case of a tie.
  2. If a Troll and/or a Mistletoe card is present on the Location Card, resolve their effects.
  3. The victory point values of the remaining cards are added to their respective owner's score.

Once all Locations have been scored, the player with the most victory points is the winner. If multiple players are tied in terms of victory points, the player holding Location Cards with the highest total capacity is the winner. If their total capacities are also the same, then the game is a draw.

Q&A

Q1. Can I play a Night Watch card on a Location Card that has already reached capacity, and move another player's card from there to another Location Card? A1. No, a Location Card cannot exceed capacity, even temporarily.

Q2. If two Troll cards and one Mistletoe card have been played on the same Location Card, what happens? A2. If there are more Troll cards than Mistletoe on the Location Card, then discard all the cards on that Location Card, including the Troll cards.

Q3. Can I look at my face down cards later in the game to confirm which card I played? A3. No, you may not look at any of your face down cards until Scoring.

Special Rules

These are the basic Night Rules for the game, but you can also try out Day Rules by playing Troll, Mistletoe, and Riches cards face up.
