Contents

  • 4 little magical beings (wooden play figures)
  • 1 forest (shadow box)
  • 1 game board (to be inserted into bottom part of game box)
  • 4 cardboard strips
  • 13 shadow figures (wooden)
  • 13 dweller cards (cardboard)
  • 1 flashlight
  • 1 base for the flashlight
  • Set of game instructions

Preparation

Set-up Shadow Box

  1. Connect the four strips and place them in the bottom part of the box.
  2. Place the game board on top and insert the turning disk (campfire face up) into the hole in the center of the game board.
  3. Assemble the shadow box by inserting the four walls into the slots of the game board and the lid on top. This is the Shadow Forest.
  4. At the open side of the shadow box, place the base for the flashlight next to the game box. Place the flashlight on it so that the light shines on the screen.
  5. Each player chooses a little magical being and places it on the starting square of the path through the wood.

The path through the wood runs from the start square to the target square.

Basic Game for Junior Magicians

According to the number of players, you choose a given number of shadow figures and the corresponding cards. The shadow figures match exactly the outline of the magic dwellers shown on the cards.

  • With 2 players: 8 shadow figures and 8 cards
  • With 3 players: 9 shadow figures and 9 cards
  • With 4 players: 10 shadow figures and 10 cards

Place the cards face up and get the shadow figures ready.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction.

Who is the first to find a funny name for his little magical being? You start and are the first shadow dancer. Place the open side of the box so that it faces you. The other players now close their eyes or turn around. Choose 7 shadow figures and place them in the slots around the campfire. Keep the rest of the figures hidden behind the game box. Adjust the turning disk so that the mushrooms are in line with the lamp (= starting position).

Now the magical shadow dance can start. The other players can open their eyes and look. After giving the starting command they have to try and recognize the figures from their silhouettes as they dance past the fire, while trying to remember which figures have not taken part.

You give the starting command "One, two, last ... who dances past?" and switch on the lamp. Turn the campfire (at the outside of the shadow box) all the way round until the mushrooms are once again at the starting position and switch off the flashlight (or take it off the base and place it down in a way that the beam of light can't be seen).

What a magical shadow dance! Have a look at the cards in the center of the table and, one by one, starting from the player next to the shadow dancer, take the card of a figure that did not dance past and place it in front of you. Whoever is not sure can pass on their turn.

Now the shadow dancer reveals his secret. Show the figures that were hidden behind the box. They did not participate in the dance.

Who remembered the shadow figures well?

  • Right. Perfect magic memory! Whoever has a correct card in front of them can move his magical being one square on the path through the wood.
  • Wrong. Bad luck. Now the shadow dancer can move his magical being one square forward for each figure that has been incorrectly recognized.

Place all the cards back in the center of the table.

New Round

The next player is the new shadow dancer. He places the game box in front of him and swaps as many figures on the turning disk as he likes. Then a new shadow dance starts.

End of the Game

Whoever is the first to move his magical being onto the target square wins the game and secures for himself the best spectator's seat for the next shadow dance. If various players reach the target simultaneously, they all win.

Hint: Bewitched Memory

Play as in the basic game, but with the dweller cards face down. So before starting to play, memorize carefully the magical dwellers on the cards and then turn the cards over before the dance starts.

Variation #1: Magic in a matter of Seconds

This variation is for three or four players.

The magic variation is played like the basic game with the following changes:

  • Choose 9 shadow figures and the corresponding dweller cards.
  • After the lamp has been switched off, you simultaneously snatch for the cards of the magic dwellers, those who did not take part in the dance.
  • Important: Only use one hand for snatching, and you must place a card down in front of you before you can snatch another card.
  • Cards placed down cannot be returned to the center.
  • In this variation a player can collect various cards.

Variation #2: Risky Mambo Jumbo

Play the basic game with the following changes:

  • Play with all 13 of the shadow figures and all the cards.
  • The player following the shadow dancer may first choose the card of a magic dweller that did not take part in the shadow dance. Then the other players, one by one (except the shadow dancer, of course), take a card. This goes on until no one wants to take a card or all players pass their turn.
  • For each correct card you can move your magical being one square. For each wrong card your figure has to step back one square. The shadow dancer, on the other hand, can move his figure one square for each wrongly taken card and for any card that has not been taken.

Hint: Tricky Memory Mambo Jumbo

Play the variation with the cards face down. So before the shadow dance starts, memorize carefully the cards.
