Goal of the Game
The goal is to score as many points as possible after the 12 turns of the game, provided you do not lose before then! To achieve this, players move stacks of tokens on the central board, using their Energy drops to form triangles of the same colour. They can then take a token and place it on their Magician board. The game ends when a player does not have enough Energy drops to take a token, or when both Magician boards are full.
Mystria requires a minimum of getting used to. This is why we first offer a setup and rules for an introductory game, to train in a simplified mode. Very soon you will be able to move on to the full version of the game (see Full Rules).
Setup - Introductory Rules
- Players sit facing each other. Place the central board between the two magicians.
- Each player receives a Magician board.
- The first player takes 6 Energy drops, the second takes 5.
- Randomly place a stack of three tokens on every space of the board, except those marked with a star. Note: do not create stacks of 3 identical tokens.
- Place the score board on the face showing 2 / 3 / 3 / 4. The second player chooses and places 1 score token of each colour on each space. They determine the value of the coloured tokens for this game.
- Place the Majority token beside the board, on the face showing 5.
Introductory Rules
On their turn, a magician (1) gives their opponent a certain number of Energy drops in order to take one of the tokens on the central board and (2) places it on their board. Then the turn passes to the opponent.
1 / Taking a Token
To take a token from the central board, you must manage to form a triangle of three identical tokens. To do so, you have two types of actions:
- Move a stack of tokens to an adjacent empty space. Note: spaces linked by lines are considered adjacent.
- Flip a stack of tokens.
You must always move and flip the entire stack of tokens. As long as a triangle is not formed, the stacks are inseparable.
Each time you perform either of these actions, give one Energy drop to your opponent: you weaken yourself!
On your turn, you must take a token. To do so, you may perform as many actions as you wish, until you manage to form a triangle. However, if you must perform an action but are out of Energy drops, you immediately lose the game.
Once you have formed a triangle, you can take the top token of one of the three stacks that form the triangle.
If a triangle was already formed from the previous turn, you can directly take one of the tokens without spending an Energy drop.
When taking a token, keep in mind that the colour of your tokens and the number of Energy drops you have left at the end of the game determine your total points.
2 / Placing a Token
Each token you obtain must be placed on a space of your choice on your Magician board.
When placing a token, keep in mind that you score points thanks to your largest group of the same colour.
A colour group is formed when tokens of the same colour are placed next to each other, following the connections printed on the board. Warning: three places are not connected on the board!
End of the Game
There are two end-of-game conditions:
- If a player does not have enough Energy drops to take a token, they immediately lose the game.
- When the players have each played their 12 turns and placed their last token, they proceed to the scoring detailed below.
The player with the most points wins the duel! In case of a tie, the player with the most Energy drops remaining wins the game.
Scoring - Introductory Rules
- Score board: For each colour, players multiply the number of tokens in their largest group of adjacent tokens by the value of that colour on the score board.
- Majority token: The player with the largest group of tokens of the same colour earns 5 additional points. In case of a tie, the points are not awarded.
- Energy: Each player scores 1 point per remaining Energy drop.
Example
(Score board: 2 / 3 / 3 / 4 for the four colours; Majority token 5.)
- There are 3 purple tokens in the largest group of purple tokens of magician A. She therefore scores 3 x 2 points for this colour. She counts her green, blue and red tokens in the same way. She scores a total of 30 points (3 x 2 + 1 x 3 + 3 x 3 + 3 x 4), against 36 points for magician B (2 x 2 + 5 x 3 + 3 x 3 + 2 x 4).
- The largest group of tokens of magician A counts 3 red tokens, and that of magician B 5 green tokens. The 5 points of the Majority token are won by magician B.
- Magician A has 5 Energy drops left. She scores 5 additional points, against 6 for magician B.
Magician B wins the game with 47 points (33+5+6) against 35 (30+0+5). (Printed as such in the source; the 33 does not match the 36 computed above.)
Full Rules
After a few introductory games, the magicians can confidently tackle the full version of the game. Here is the list of changes compared to the introductory version.
Setup
- Each magician receives two Objective tiles taken at random. She consults them secretly, chooses one and discards the other. The discarded Objective tiles and the kept ones remain face down until the end of the game.
- The Majority token is placed on the face showing 3, not the face showing 5.
- The score board is placed on the face showing 3 / 5 / 7 / 10. It is the second player who chooses, once the board is set up, which value to assign to each colour.
Objective Tiles
Each Objective tile represents a pattern to reproduce with tokens of a single colour on the Magician board. All the spaces of the pattern must be occupied by tokens of the same colour to validate the objective, which is only revealed at the end of the game.
Scoring - Full Rules
- Score board: For each colour, players compare the size of their largest group of adjacent tokens. The one with the largest group wins the associated points on the score board. No points are scored in case of a tie.
- Objective: Each player reveals their secret objective. If it was achieved, the player scores the number of points indicated on the tile. Objectives are individual: if a player happens to have reproduced the pattern of their opponent, they do not score the points of that objective.
- Majority token: The player with the largest group of tokens of the same colour earns 3 additional points. In case of a tie, the points are not awarded.
- Energy: Each player scores 1 point per remaining Energy drop.
Example
(Score board: 3 / 5 / 7 / 10; Majority token 3.)
- Magician A has the largest number of adjacent purple and red tokens, so she wins the associated points, 3 and 10. There is a tie for the largest group of blue tokens: nobody scores the associated 7 points. Finally, magician B has the largest group of green tokens, so she wins 5.
- Here each magician has fulfilled her secret objective and therefore obtains the points shown, 7 and 6 respectively.
- Magician B has the largest group of tokens of the same colour thanks to her group of green tokens, so she wins the 3 points of the Majority token.
- Magician A has 5 Energy drops left. She scores 5 additional points, against 6 for magician B.
Magician A wins the game with 25 points (13+7+0+5) against 20 (5+6+3+6) for magician B.
