Overview

The Pilgrims' Chronicles is a small 12 card expansion that includes new Scriptorium, Bibliotheca and Event cards and brings additional intrigue and fun to the Mystery of the Abbey boardgame.

New Scriptorium cards include:

  • Theological Controversy - enabling you to ask questions of all the monks in a room, rather than just one.
  • Liturgy of the Hours - during Mass YOU get to decide in which order and to whom cards get passed.

Additional Scriptorium cards include: Acts of the Holy Apostles, Impure Illuminations and Blasphemous Treatise.

New Event cards include:

  • Tempus Fugit!, which increases the pace of the game allowing players to move 3 steps with only 3 turns in between each Mass.
  • A New Corpse and Another New Corpse - both add additional bodies to the game.
  • Tentative Escape - gives a chance to the culprit to escape from the Abbey and end the game prematurely.

Additional Event cards include: Catechism and Spring Fair.

A new Bibliotheca card - Calumnious Denunciation allows you to secretly write down the name of a suspect of your choosing and if another player laters accuses your suspect of being the culprit, but he proves to be innocent you will immediately score 4 points.

Note: the publisher's page calls the card "Another New Corpse". The printed card reads "Yet Another Corpse!", and that is the name used below.

Setup

The cards are simply shuffled into their respective draw piles before the start of the game.

Publisher's note: the Pilgrim Chronicles expansion is now included in the Mystery of the Abbey box. Owners of the previous version of the game can get it for free from the Days of Wonder Online store with just a small shipping and handling fee.

Scriptorium Cards

Theological Controversy

Does the Holy Spirit proceed from the Father and the Son, or solely from the Father?

Keep this card in hand, and play it when you arrive in the same location as multiple other players. You may then ask each of them a question, instead of only asking one of them. Any monk that answers you may in turn ask you a question.

Liturgy of the Hours

The Abbey's bell-ringer, Brother Marco, has overslept. Confusion reigns as the monks frantically rush to the Chapel praying not to be late for Mass.

Keep this card and play it during Mass to select in which order and to whom each player passes his cards. All cards passed by a given player remain together and must go to a single other monk.

Acts of the Holy Apostles

"They were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common" (Acts 4:32)

Keep this card in hand, and play it when you get caught rummaging through another monk's cell. You can keep the suspect card you just stole and ignore penance.

Impure Illuminations

Not all of the Abbey's manuscripts are the work of Saints.

Keep this card in hand. When you meet another monk, you may draw a suspect card from him at random, in exchange for this card. The card's recipient can later use it again to draw a card from any monk he meets in the Abbey. The card remains in the game until the end.

Blasphemous Treatise

According to this manuscript, the remains of Count Robert, a nobleman of ill repute, lie in the Crypt of the Monastery. Famous for his blasphemous deeds, his internment is a source of unspeakable shame for the Abbey.

All monks holding a Crypt card must immediately place it back in the Crypt.

Event Cards

Catechism

The Novices are sent to their cells for study.

Each player with at least one Novice in hand must select one Novice card and place it face down in the room adjacent to his cell. Any player ending his move in that room may take a look at this card. If the player is the card's owner, he may take the card back into his hand. When the next Mass begins, any Novice still left in front of his cell goes back into its original owner's hand.

Spring Fair

The Spring Fair draws many a visitor to the Abbey, some of whom come to visit a cloistered son or brother.

Take a Suspect card at random from each player. Shuffle these cards and place them all, face down, in the Parlor. (Place them beneath any existing Suspect cards in the Parlor.) Monks visiting the Parlor will then draw the top card from the pile as always.

Tempus Fugit!

The pace of life in the Abbey quickens as the monks prepare for the coming of the Inquisitor.

From now on, the game is played with the 6 player rules in effect: move up to 3 steps per turn, and play with only 3 turns between each Mass.

If you are already playing with these rules in effect, draw another card instead.

A New Corpse!

A body was discovered under the Bridge at the doorstep of the Abbey.

Roll a dice to pick a player from whom a Suspect card is drawn at random and placed face down on the Bridge. For the rest of the game, each time a monk comes out of the Abbey onto the Bridge, that player may look at this suspect card before placing it back face down. Once all players have seen this card, place it face up next to the board.

Yet Another Corpse!

A body was discovered sprawled in the Abbey's pig pen!

Roll a dice to pick a player from whom a suspect card is drawn at random and placed face down in the Courtyard (Aula). For the rest of the game, each time a monk stops in the Courtyard, that player may look at this suspect card before placing it back face down. Once all players have seen this card, place it face up next to the board.

Tentative Escape

The culprit plans to escape by boat while the monks are occupied during Mass.

Take the culprit's suspect card from under the board and place it face down in the graveyard next to the Crypt. At the beginning of the next mass, and each mass thereafter, roll one die. On a roll of black, the culprit successfully escapes. Reveal his identity by flipping his card over. The game ends. Compute current scores based on correct revelation(s) and wrong accusation(s) made so far. On all other rolls, continue the game as normal.

Bibliotheca Cards

Calumnious Denunciation

Taking advantage of the relative seclusion the Library offers, you forge a fake document incriminating an old enemy.

Secretly write down the name of a suspect of your choosing. If another player later accuses your suspect of being the culprit, and your suspect turns out to be innocent, you immediately score 4 points.
