Components
- 18 Valkyrie Structure Cards divided into 3 decks (Era I, Era II, and Era III). A duplicate set of these decks with foil finish is also provided.
- 5 Valkyries
- 1 Valkyrie Launch Board
- 3 Reputation Cards
- 3 Expedition Cards
Setup
After setting up the base game do the following:
- Place the Valkyrie Launch Board above the Flag Rewards Board.
- Give each player one Valkyrie, then place the rest of the Valkyries next to the Valkyrie Launch Board.
- Place the three Valkyrie Structure Card decks on the table. Use either the decks with foil finish or the ones without. The decks are identical gameplay-wise.
Rules
Each player has one Valkyrie that they may send to the Valkyrie Launch Board to build a powerful Valkyrie Structure Card once per Era. Players also get a small bonus when they launch their Valkyrie.
Construction Phase
At the beginning of each Construction Phase place one Valkyrie Structure card per player from the current Era deck face-up above the Valkyrie Launch Board. In 2-Player games use 3 cards.
Place any unowned Valkyries on Valkyrie Launch Spots according to the numbers in the top left corner of the first (leftmost) Valkyrie Structure Card. In a 2-Player game for example you would place 3 Valkyries. In a 3-Player game you would only place two Valkyries, using only the first two numbers. With 4 players only one Valkyrie will be placed, using the first number. At 5-Players there are no unowned Valkyries to place.
End of Construction Phase
Return all Valkyries to their owners and remove any unowned Valkyries from the Valkyrie Launch board. Discard any unowned Valkyrie Structure Cards back into their deck.
Launching a Valkyrie
You may launch a Valkyrie on your turn as an optional action instead of parking a Rover. Place the Valkyrie on the leftmost available spot on the Valkyrie Launch Board and take the reward depicted. If you have the required flags and can pay the resource cost, you may then optionally build one of the face-up Valkyrie Structure Cards.
Building this card is an extra action you can do in addition to your mandatory action of building or assimilating a card from hand.
One vehicle per turn
You may choose to either park a Rover or launch a Valkyrie on your turn. This makes it slightly harder to build the Valkyrie Structure Cards.
When teaching the game with the expansion, it makes sense to simply tell the players they can use "one vehicle per turn" instead of saying "one Rover per turn".
Valkyrie Launch Board reference
Each Launch Spot has a different reward that is claimed when the Valkyrie is placed:
-
no reward (but you get first pick of the cards!).
-
take one Rover to your Supply.
-
take one resource of choice to your supply.
-
you have one extra Flag of choice this turn to use for building Structure Cards. It can also be used for building your Valkyrie Structure Card this turn.
-
take two resources of choice to your supply.
Timing is crucial. The later you launch your Valkyrie, the better the reward will likely be. But if you wait too long another player might grab the card you want.
Valkyrie Expansion in Solo Mode
The Valkyrie Expansion can be used with the Solo Mode from the base game. Set up as for 2-Players, but do not give GURPS a Valkyrie, and do not cover up any Valkyrie Launch Spots at the beginning of each Construction Phase. Instead GURPS will place a Valkyrie on the leftmost available Launch Spot whenever they play a Solo Card with the Adjust Vehicles effect. When this happens, also randomly remove one of the available face-up Valkyrie Structure Cards. This can result in all three Valkyrie cards getting discarded if you wait too long with launching your Valkyrie.
Using the expansion makes the Solo Mode easier as the Valkyrie Structure Cards tend to boost the player scores. If you want to mitigate this, play on Hard Mode. If you still want a more challenging game, try beating GURPS by more than 50 points on Hard Mode.
New Reputation and Expedition Cards reference
These new cards can be mixed in with the base game cards and used with or without the Valkyrie Expansion.
Enthusiastic Expedition
If you don't flip your pink cards with Hearts on them you can keep the Hearts on the cards and score them in the Scoring Phases just like Hearts placed on grey Structures and Reputation Cards.
Stockpiling Expedition
Rovers don't break ties for who has the most resources.
Valkyrie Structure Cards reference
The rules sheet prints reference text only for the cards below. It does not print the text of the other Valkyrie Structure Cards; those are read from the cards themselves.
Beef Trees
In addition to the Scoring Phase this card applies in all circumstances where you check who is winning a Flag, such as when using cards like the Hyped Expedition and the Antenna.
Earth Portal
The Wild Flag only counts as one Flag, so it can't by itself fulfil two Flag Requirements. In the scoring phase this Flag must be used for just one of the Flag Rewards.
Space Dock
This scores for Production Symbols, it does not score resource tokens.
Ark
This scores for each set of the four main structure types: yellow, blue, grey and pink. If you have one of each for example, you score 3 Hearts. It does not score for red structures.
Lunar Bank
This scores for each set of the four different resource tokens: Water, Energy, Biomass and Metal. If you have one of each for example, you score 4 Hearts. It does not score for Production Symbols.
