  • 10 wooden sunbeam fragments
  • 8 wooden raindrops
  • 1 multi-coloured wooden die
  • 12 wooden kid tokens

Set-Up

You can ask an adult to help you with the set-up.

  1. Choose a seating disc and assemble the carousel as shown on the flyer (or watch the video by scanning the QR code on the back of this book).
  2. Fit the carousel into the game board.
  3. Place the raindrops and the sunbeam fragments next to the board.
  4. Place the kid tokens and the die next to the board as well.

The player who most recently rode on a carousel goes first.

Meet the Characters

  • Monsieur Carrousel: He helps you to find the empty seats on the carousel.
  • The twins (Caspar and Arto): They are Monsieur Carrousel's assistants. They can help you out at the end of the game if needed (see "Getting help from the twins").
  • The kids: They want nothing more than to ride the carousel! Nelson, Paul, Lulu, Elisa, Maya, John, Liam, Leanne, Ethan, Amy, Mimi, Yanis.

Object of the Game

Monsieur Carrousel is a cooperative game. Work together to help all of the kids get on the carousel before the rain starts to fall!

Gameplay

Play in a clockwise direction.

A player's turn is divided into 2 phases, played one after the other:

  • Phase 1: Place Kid Tokens
  • Phase 2: Weather

Phase 1: Place Kid Tokens

  • On your turn, roll the die. The colours on the die match the colours on the wooden carousel.
  • Choose a kid token that is not yet on the carousel and place it on an empty seat that matches the colour rolled on the die.
  • Move on to Phase 2: Weather.

Make sure to remember the seat type of the kids (e.g. lion). You'll need this later! (See "If the seat already has a kid token on it.")

What if all of the seats of the colour shown on the die are already taken?

If the seats of the colour shown on the die are already taken, turn the carousel. When it stops, look at the seat that Monsieur Carrousel is pointing at with his finger:

Note: If you're not sure which seat Monsieur Carrousel is pointing to, turn the carousel again!

If the seat is empty

Choose a kid token and place it on the seat that Monsieur Carrousel is pointing to. Now move on to Phase 2: Weather.

If the seat already has a kid token on it

Can you remember what seat the kid is sitting on (e.g. lion)? You may ask the other players what they think. When you think you've figured it out, say out loud which seat you think the kid is sitting on, and lift up the kid token. After checking, make sure you put the kid token back on the seat.

  • If you correctly guessed the seat, bravo! You can put a sunbeam fragment on the board. See "How to complete a sunbeam fragment on the game board?" for more information on how to place sunbeam fragments.
  • If you guessed wrong, oops! You must place a raindrop on one of the corresponding spaces on the game board. Your turn is now over.

Tip: To help with memorisation, the players can come up with short stories as they place their kid token on the carousel.

Phase 2: Weather

Once the kid has been placed on an empty seat, turn the carousel (it must complete at least one full turn). Don't lose sight of your kid!

Don't turn the carousel too fast or the kid tokens could go flying off!

While the carousel is turning, you can sing this little song all together:

"Carousel, carousel, turn all day, Sun, sun, sun, keep the rain away!"

What's the weather like when the carousel stops?

Two different zones surround the carousel. They show the weather. Look at the zone where your kid ended up when the carousel stopped turning.

Note: If you're not sure which zone your kid token is in, turn the carousel again!

Sun zone

If the kid is in the sun zone, great! The sun is shining! Choose a sunbeam fragment and place it immediately on one of the corresponding spaces on the game board. The next player now takes their turn.

Attention, a sunbeam must be entirely complete before a new one can be started.

How to complete a sunbeam fragment on the game board?

When you have picked your sunbeam fragment and placed it on the board, there are two possibilities:

  • The sunbeam fragment completes the sunbeam, good job! The sun appears and you can remove one raindrop from the game board.
  • The sunbeam fragment doesn't complete the sunbeam because it is too short or too long. The sun isn't shining brightly enough to remove a raindrop. Put the sunbeam fragment back next to the game board.

In either case, your turn is over and the next player now takes their turn.

Note: If all of the sunbeams are complete, nothing happens when a kid token stops in the sun zone, the sun is already high in the sky.

Rain zone

Your kid is in the rain zone? Oh no! The clouds are gathering. Place a raindrop on one of the corresponding spaces on the game board. The next player now takes their turn.

Getting Help from the Twins

If there is only one kid token left to place on the carousel, and only at that time, you can ask for help from the twins, Caspar and Arto. You get an extra roll of the die!

On your turn, roll the die. If the colour shown on the die does not match the colour of the empty seat, you may roll the die one more time.

  • If the die shows the colour of the empty seat, yippee! You can place your last kid token!
  • Otherwise, turn the carousel, look at the seat Monsieur Carrousel is pointing to, and play as explained in the section "What if all of the seats of the colour shown on the die are already taken?"

End of the Game

The game can end in one of two ways:

  • If all of the kids are on the carousel and the rain zone is incomplete, congratulations! All of the kids had a great day and you won the game!
  • If at the end of a player's turn all of the raindrops have been placed on the game board and there are empty seats on the carousel, it's just too rainy and the ride has to close for the day. You have lost this game.
