Object of the Game
The goal is to accumulate the highest total of cash and property value when the last Scrabble letter tile is played.
Players do this by creating words and playing them on the Scrabble section of the board. The score of a player's word determines the number of spaces they move around the Monopoly track. Build a word over a special Monopoly space on the Scrabble board and the player also acquires that Property Card.
Components
1 Quad-Fold Gameboard 5 Wooden Scrabble Tile Racks 100 Wooden Scrabble Letter Tiles Tile Storage Bag 9 Silver-Toned Monopoly Tokens Deck of 24 Community Chest Cards Deck of 24 Chance Cards 10 Property Cards Monopoly Money Pad (Sixty $100 bills and Sixty $500 bills) Illustrated Rules
Set Up
- Each player takes a tile rack and seven tiles. Place the remaining letter tiles in the tile bag.
- Chose a player to act as the Banker. The Banker gives each player one $500 bill and five $100 bills. The Banker then places one $500 bill under the Free Parking space. Finally, they place the remaining money and the Property Cards to the side to form the Bank.
- Place a tile rack by the Bank and place seven tiles in it. These are tiles that are available for purchase by all players. The Banker is responsible for this Bank Tile Rack.
- Separately shuffle the Chance and Community Chest cards and place them face down beside the board.
- Each player picks a token and places it on the GO space.
- Players each pick one letter from the tile bag. The player who has the letter closest to "A" in the alphabet goes first. Play follows to the left.
The Gameboard
The board consists of two separate sections, the Scrabble section and the Monopoly section.
The Scrabble Section Of The Board (In Blue Above). The center section of the board is laid out much like a traditional Scrabble board. Players take turns placing tiles on this board to create words. If a player's word covers one of the spaces that has a Monopoly property pictured on it, they take that Property Card from the bank or from the player that holds it.
The Monopoly Section Of The Board (In Green Above). The outer section of the board is laid out much like a Monopoly board. Players move their tokens around the board based on the total score of the words they create. They then complete their turn by doing whatever the space they land on directs them to do (draw a Chance or Community Chest card, pay rent, move to Free Parking, etc.)
Moving Around The Board
There are no dice in this game. Players move around the board by creating a Scrabble word first. The score of a player's Scrabble word equals the number of spaces that player moves their token around the Monopoly board. Once a player places their Scrabble tiles on the board to create a word, they tally up the score of their word and then move their token that number of spaces around the board.
Landing On A Property Space
When a player lands on a property space, they must pay the owner of that property the rent marked on the board. If the property is not owned, a player does not have to pay any rent. Players may NOT purchase any property simply by landing on it. This is described in detail under "Obtaining Property Cards".
The Bank And The Banker
The bank consists of all the excess money, the Property Cards and the Bank Tile Rack. The Banker is responsible for the following:
- Distributing the Property Cards to the players when they play a word on the Scrabble section of the board that covers one of the Property spaces.
- Paying players $2000 when they pass "GO".
- Keeping the Bank Tile Rack filled with seven letter tiles.
- Replacing the $500 under Free Parking after it has been won by a player.
- Making change for players whenever necessary.
Building Scrabble Words
All standard Scrabble rules apply when building words. For a refresher on standard Scrabble rules, a brief recap is included at the end of this instruction sheet (see "Brief Scrabble Rules" below).
In addition, the following two rules are also followed in Monopoly Scrabble.
Obtaining Property Cards
There are 10 Property Cards that represent the different properties from the Monopoly game. These properties can be obtained by either creating a word that covers a corresponding space on the Scrabble section of the board or by drawing the appropriate Chance and/or Community Chest card. In this game, Property Cards cannot be purchased at any time. Players cannot purchase Property Cards by simply landing on the property.
Buying Letter Tiles From The Bank
- Any number of letter tiles may be purchased from the Bank Tile Rack at a cost of $100 per tile. This money is placed under the Free Parking space. The tiles purchased must be used during the same turn in which the player buys them.
- The Banker replaces any tiles that were purchased from the Bank FIRST. The player then replaces any tiles from their rack. Players must always keep the number of tiles on their rack at seven, as long as there are enough tiles left in the bag.
Bingo
- In standard Scrabble, a player who plays all seven tiles from their rack on one turn, scores 50 points for a "bingo". In Monopoly Scrabble, instead of scoring 50 points, a player is rewarded with any available (not owned by another player) Property Card of their choice. If no Property Cards are left, the player receives $1000 from the Bank for their Bingo.
Jail
A player is sent to Jail, either by landing on the "Go To Jail" space on the board or by direction of a Chance or Community Chest card. On their next turn they must pay $100 as a fine to get out of jail, and then they take their turn as normal.
Free Parking
The Free Parking space should always have at least $500 dollars under it. When players buy tiles from the Bank, pay for replacing a blank tile or pay the fee to get out of Jail, the money goes to Free Parking. When a player lands on Free Parking, they take all the money that has accumulated there and add it to their money. The Banker then replaces the initial $500 to Free Parking from the Bank.
Passing GO
Players earn $2000 dollars (Yes! Ten times the amount earned for passing Go in standard Monopoly!) for passing Go in Monopoly Scrabble. The Banker pays the player $2000, from the Bank, when they pass Go.
Bankruptcy
It is extremely rare to go bankrupt in Monopoly Scrabble. However, if a player cannot pay their debts, they may sell any/all of their Property Cards back to the Bank, at half the printed value on the card. If they are still unable to pay their debts, they are bankrupt and out of the game.
Gameplay
What Happens On A Player's Turn?
- Make A Word. The first player combines two or more of their letters (along with any tiles they may have purchased from the Bank, described in the next column) to form a word, and places the word on the board to read either across or down with one letter on the center star square.
- Claim A Property Card? If the word they created covers one or more property spaces, they take those Property Cards from the Bank OR from the player who currently owns them.
- Move Their Token. The player counts and announces their score for their word and then moves their token along the Monopoly track the number of spaces that they just scored.
- Pay Rent? If the player's token lands on a property space that is owned by another player, the player who landed on the space must pay the property owner the rent due. Rent is listed on the property space on the board.
- Monopoly Space "Action". The player completes their turn by doing whatever the space they landed on instructs them to do (draw a Chance or Community Chest card, pay rent, move to Free Parking, etc.).
- Play passes to the left. The second player, and then each in turn, adds one or more letters to those already on the Scrabble board to form new words.
- No letter tile may be shifted or replaced after it has been played and scored, with the exception of "blank" tiles.
- Blank tiles. The two blank tiles may be used as any letters. When a player plays a blank tile, they must state which letter it represents. It remains that letter for the rest of the game. A blank tile that is on the board being used in a word may be replaced by the actual letter that it represents, with a tile from a player's tile rack. There is a fee of $500 (placed under Free Parking) paid by the player making this swap. The player can use the blank tile on the same turn or they can add it to their rack for future use. When replayed, this blank tile becomes any letter chosen by the player.
Buying Tiles From The Bank
A player (on their turn) may also purchase (for $100) a letter tile from the Bank Tile Rack and use it to replace the letter the blank tile (in use on the board) represents. To do this, the player would also need to pay the $500 fee (described above) to make the tile swap. A pricey move, but it could be worth it in the right situation.
End Of Game, Scoring, And Winning
- The game ends when all letters have been drawn from the tile bag and when one player uses their last tile OR when all possible plays have been made.
- Unplayed Letter Tiles. When the game ends, each player must pay the Bank for their unplayed letter tiles. However, if one of the players used all of their tiles, then all other players must pay that player for their unplayed tiles. The value of each tile is $100.
In this example: Player A has used all of their tiles. Player B has three tiles left, Player C has one tile left and Player D has 2 tiles left. Player A would receive a total of $600 dollars ($300 from Player B, $100 from Player C and $200 from Player D).
- Players now total up the value of their Monopoly money and any Property Cards they've collected during the game.
- The player with the highest total value of money and property is the winner of Monopoly Scrabble and a true Real Estate and Word-Building Champion!
Brief Scrabble Rules
This recap is printed on the reverse side of the instruction sheet.
Placing Scrabble Tiles
There are several ways players can place tiles to form words.
- Place letters at a right angle to a word already on the board.
- Add a letter (or letters) to an existing word. A word can be extended on both ends on the same turn.
- Place letters parallel to a word. All adjacent letters must form complete words across and down.
- Bridge two words to make another.
Scrabble Scoring
- The score value of each letter tile is indicated at the bottom of the tile. The score value of a blank tile is zero.
- The score for each turn is the sum of the letter values in each word(s) formed or modified on that turn, plus the additional points obtained from placing letters on premium squares.
- The first word of the game, placed on the center (star graphic) pink square, scores double.
- A covered premium square is no longer premium. Premium square bonus points are only counted on the turn in which letter tiles are first placed on them.
- When a player forms more than one word on a turn, they count every letter (with any premium value) for each word they form. That means if they place a letter on a premium square and it's part of two words, they count that letter and premium value twice!
- If a word crosses a premium letter and a premium word square, total the letter score first and then double (or triple) the word score.
- Blanks on premium squares do double or triple word scores (even though the blank itself has no value). But blanks on a double or triple letter square are still worth nothing.
- It is possible to form a word that covers two premium word squares. A player's word score would be doubled, then, doubled again. Or tripled, then, tripled again!
Legal Scrabble Words
Players can play any word listed in The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary (or the dictionary of their choice), but remember to only use the dictionary for challenges. There is no limit to the number of times players may use a certain word during a game.
Which words are NOT allowed?
- Proper nouns and names (i.e., words starting with a capital letter)
- Foreign words
- Abbreviations (e.g., no EG)
- Acronyms (e.g., no LOL, SOS, or ASAP)
- Freestanding prefixes or suffixes (e.g., you can add MILLI to METER, but a player cannot place MILLI alone)
- Hyphenated words (e.g., no XRAY)
- Apostrophes (e.g., a player can use DO or NOT, but never DONT)
- Offensive words, whether demeaning, discriminatory, obscene, or vulgar.
Challenges
Don't think that's a word? Any player may challenge another before the next player starts their turn.
- If someone challenges a player's word, look it up in the dictionary.
- If it isn't there, the player must take back their letters and their turn ends.
- If the word is there, the player scores their word and their challenger loses their next turn.
