- Good to know: In Mojo, the higher the value of a card the more of it there is in the game.
Aim of the Game
In order to win, you must have the lowest score at the end of the game. You have many ways to do so. Throw your highest cards away OR choose to play the lowest. Get rid of your cards OR keep the ones of the same color. But watch out! If you have the Mojo card, be clever or you might regret it!
Set Up
Put the Mojo card at the center of the table with its zero face up. Shuffle the cards and deal 8 to each player.
Put the remaining cards face down next to the Mojo card to form the draw pile. Take the first card and put it face up next to the draw pile to form the discard pile.
The youngest player starts the first round.
Round Structure
Players play one after the other following the order indicated by the arrow on the Mojo card.
During your turn, you must play a card from your hand and place it on the discard pile.
You can play any card from your hand.
If the value of the played card is:
- Lower than the one it covers, your turn is over.
- Higher than the one it covers, draw a card and your turn is over.
- Equal to the one at the top of the discard pile, you MUST play a new card from your hand (if possible). If the value of the card is still equal to the top discard pile, then you play one of your cards again (if possible). This allows you to get rid of many cards in a single turn. If the value of this card is not the same, you MUST follow the usual playing rules.
You cannot play several identical cards if their value is different from the one at the top of the discard pile.
Exemple: You play several 8, then a 7 and you have another 7 in your hand. You cannot play it.
At any time, if you must draw a card and the pile is empty, leave the last card of the discard pile on the table face up and shuffle all the other cards to form a new draw pile.
Mojo Time!
The Mojo Time is the critical moment of the round. As soon as you have 3 cards or less at the end of your turn, the countdown for the end of the round is triggered. If you have 3 cards or less at the end of your turn, you MUST put them face down in front of you.
These cards will not be played and will be scored at the end of the round.
The round continues as usual with the other players.
If you have face down cards in front of you at the beginning of your turn, you must choose and reveal one of them.
These revealed cards will remain face up in front of the players for the whole round.
Notice: the Mojo Time rule applies to all players during a round. If several players have 3 cards or less at the end of their turn, they must put them face down in front of them.
End of Round
The round ends as soon as a player reveals their last card or if a player gets to play all of their cards at once. This player takes the Mojo card in front of them and the players proceed to the scoring phase.
Your score is calculated with the cards face up in front of you and with the cards in your hand.
For each color, keep the card with the highest value.
Add them together to get your score.
If you have several cards with the same value: count only one of them.
If you have the Mojo card in front of you: score 0 points if your score is lower to or equal to the other players' (leave or turn the Mojo card with the 0 face up). However, add 10 points to your round's score if your score is higher than another player's (leave or turn the Mojo card with the +10 face up).
Write down the total score of each player in the score pad. It is advised to directly add these results to the previous ones to check if the end of the game is triggered.
If it is not, all cards are discarded and players proceed to the next round.
New Round
Deal 8 cards to each player.
If the draw pile is exhausted, shuffle the discard pile to form a new draw pile. (See: Round structure). Take the first card and put it face up to form the discard pile.
The player with the Mojo card puts it at the center of the table without changing its face up and starts the next round.
The order of the round is showed by the arrows on the Mojo card. That's why it is important to keep the previous round's face up (0 or +10).
End of the Game
At the end of each round, players add their score to the total of the previous rounds.
The game ends when the total score of a player reaches or exceeds 50 points.
The player with the lowest score is the winner. In case of a tie, the players share the victory.
Scoring Examples
Player A scores 9+1 = 10 points this round.
Player B scores 0+4 = 4 points this round.
Player C scores 10+11+3 = 24 points. Since they have the Mojo card and a score that is higher than another player's, they add 10 points to their round's score (34 points).
Double Discard Piles Variant
During the set up, draw a second card and put it face up next to the first one to form a second discard pile.
During each turn, choose one of the two discard piles and play your cards on this pile. If you must play one or several other cards during this turn, you must play them on this discard pile only.
When you must draw a card, you may choose between the first card of the draw pile and the other discard pile (the one on which you did not play). If a discard pile is empty, take the top card from the other discard pile to form a new one.
2 Player Game
If you have 2 cards or less at the end of your turn (not 3), you must put your cards face down in front of you.
