Can I play a card for its action and also use it as a metal for its Savant ability?
The rulebook says Savant effects apply only when the card is used as a metal, not when played for its abilities or discarded to refresh.

No — a card is either played for its effects or turned sideways as a metal, not both. A card discarded to refresh doesn't gain its Savant bonus either.
