Object of the Game
In this game, one person plays the role of the fruit thief, while all the others play the team of detectives.
To win, the detectives must correctly identify the thief among the 16 suspects. To win, the thief must find the 4 ripe fruits.
The first to reach their goal and return to the centre of the board wins the game!
Components
- 1 game board
- 1 suspects board
- 4 Character pawns
- 3 dice
- 16 Suspect tokens
- 12 Fruit tokens
- 15 Elimination tokens
- 1 Head Detective token
Setup
- Place the game board in the centre of the table.
- Place the suspects board and the 3 dice next to the game board.
- Place the Elimination tokens next to the suspects board.
- Place the Thief pawn on the central space of the game board, then:
- A. With 2 players: The detective chooses 2 Character pawns and places them in the centre with the Thief pawn.
- B. With 3 or 4 players: Each detective chooses one Character pawn and places it in the centre with the Thief pawn.
- Give the Head Detective token to the youngest of the detectives.
- Shuffle the Fruit tokens face down, and place one on each Magnifying glass icon of the board.
- Shuffle the Suspect tokens face down, and place one on each House icon of the board.
- The last Suspect token is given to the thief. This token represents their secret identity. The thief looks at it without showing it to the detectives.
Movement Rules
- Diagonal movement is forbidden.
- It is permitted to pass through or stop on a space occupied by another character.
- Picking up a token does NOT end the character's movement. You can still use all of your dice.
Game Structure
The game begins with the thief's turn, followed by the detectives' turn. Turns alternate in this way until the end of the game.
The Thief's Turn
- The thief rolls the 3 dice.
- The thief may move their pawn a number of spaces equal to the total of the 3 dice.
Picking up fruit
If the thief moves onto a Fruit token, they take it, look at it secretly and place it face down in front of them.
Example of a thief's turn
Sarah plays the thief and begins her turn by rolling the 3 dice. She gets a 2, another 2, and a 1. She can therefore move a total of 5 spaces!
A. She begins by moving one space to get the blueberry on the adjacent space. Darn, it's a rotten fruit! B. She moves 3 spaces to pick the strawberry. Great, the strawberry is ripe! C. Finally, she moves one last space to the left to get closer to the apple, which she can go and get on her next turn.
The Detectives' Turn
- The Head Detective rolls the 3 dice and distributes the dice among the detectives. Each detective must receive at least one die!
- In turn, starting with the Head Detective, each detective may move their pawn on the board a number of spaces equal to the total of the dice they received.
- The Head Detective token is passed to the next detective clockwise.
Finding clues
If a detective moves onto a Suspect token, it is revealed. The character on the token can be eliminated and the token is discarded.
If they move onto a visible Magnifying glass icon (that is, the thief has already picked the fruit that was hiding it), the thief must say whether or not they have the characteristic indicated on that space.
When the detectives manage to eliminate suspects, they place Elimination tokens on the appropriate characters on the suspects board.
Example of a detectives' turn
There are two detectives in this game: Bouillotte and Sam. Bouillotte is Head Detective for this turn and rolls the 3 dice. She gets a 3, a 1 and another 1. Bouillotte decides to keep the two 1s for herself and to give the 3 to Sam. After all, the two 1s will be enough for her to go and get a Suspect token while Sam is three spaces from a Magnifying glass.
A. Bouillotte therefore moves onto the Suspect token and reveals it. It's Flore the rabbit! She discards the Suspect token and places an Elimination token on Flore on the suspects board. B. Bouillotte then moves one space, in anticipation of the next turn.
(Continued) A. Sam moves onto a space with a magnifying glass associated with the characteristic "beret" and asks the thief: "Are you wearing a beret?" B. The thief checks their Suspect token and then reveals to the detectives that they are not wearing a beret. This allows them to eliminate all the suspects that have one. Two of the four suspects wearing a beret had already been eliminated in previous turns, so Bouillotte places an Elimination token on the other two suspects: Béatrice and Honorine.
End of the Game
When a player moves onto the central space of the board, they may end the game:
- If it is a detective, they may accuse a suspect. If they are right, the detectives win. Otherwise, the thief wins.
- If it is the thief and they have the 4 ripe Fruits, they win the game.
Notes
- In a two-player game, the person playing the detectives controls two characters. On their turn, they must distribute the dice so that each character receives at least one.
- If the person playing the thief is a young child, it is recommended that they keep the Fruit tokens they accumulate face up. This will help them keep count and visualize their progress.
