The Epic Cases

The Bonus Box contains several special cases that stretch across multiple parts of the city and are divided into several chapters. To solve these cases you must investigate on several game boards.

You may have noticed that the four boards of Crime City can be placed next to each other. The boards have a continuous coordinate grid from A to P and from 1 to 8. The four boards are arranged as follows:

  • Crime City in the north-west (top left)
  • Showdown in the north-east (top right)
  • Full House in the south-west (bottom left)
  • All In in the south-east (bottom right)

Compass directions: N (north) at the top, S (south) at the bottom, W (west) on the left, E (east) on the right.

(Diagram: a 2 × 2 layout of the four boards, with columns labelled A to P across the top and rows 1 to 8 down the side.)

It is not necessary to lay out all the boards in this form to play an Epic Case. (You may of course do so if you really have that much space!) Just make sure that all four parts of Crime City are set up. At the start of a new chapter you will be instructed to change the board. You can then fold up the previous board and put the next board on the table.

Sometimes figures walk directly "from one board into the other". In that case it helps to place the edges of the two boards next to each other. Usually, however, larger periods of time are skipped in the story when moving into a new chapter anyway. You then have to continue the investigation on the next board not by directly following the figures, but by combining clues cleverly.

Playing an Epic Case

Take the envelopes of the Epic Case you want to play and open the envelope of the first chapter. All Epic Cases begin on the Showdown board. So first put this board on the table.

Now start with the start card of the first chapter and solve the following case cards as you are used to. When you have played through the case cards of the current chapter, open the envelope of the next chapter. Each chapter has its own start card. On the back of this card there is a summary of the investigations so far. You are then told which board you must put on the table next in order to continue playing.

Of course you may look at an earlier board again at any time if you want to recall your previous discoveries.

The Epic Cases sometimes connect to older cases. For this reason we recommend playing the Epic Cases only once you have played all the regular cases. If you notice that your investigations lead to events of an older case, you may take a look at the cards of the old case to remind yourself of the exact details. If you no longer remember the case exactly, we recommend playing it again at this point before you continue with the cards of the Epic Case.

Epic Cases in the Pro Variant

You can of course also play the Epic Cases in the Pro variant. We recommend the following procedure for this:

After reading the start card, investigate freely on the current board. When you believe you have found all the relevant details in this board, go through the case cards and check your theories, until you reach the next chapter. The start card of that chapter tells you which board you must investigate next. Then do the same again.

Have fun!
