Objective
To complete a "Standard Hand" of 14 cards consisting of four sets and a pair. A set can be a sequence of three numerical cards or a triplet of three identical cards. Sequences are called "Chows" and Triplets are called "Pungs". A pair is called "Eyes". The winning hand is scored and the first player to reach 500 points wins the game.
Non-Standard Hands
In addition, there are two hands that do not follow the "Standard Hand" pattern of four sets and a pair:
- Nothing Connects is when you have no Triplets, no Sequences and no Pairs and all cards in the same Suit are at least three digits apart.
- Seven Pairs.
Please note: you can only claim a discard for these two hands if it is to win and aside from flowers do not score for any other combinations.
Setup
A dealer is chosen by lot, the deck is shuffled and each player is dealt 13 cards. The dealer will be the starting player.
Game Play
A player draws a card, or claims a discard, then discards a card and play passes to the left (clockwise).
- If a drawn card, or the last discard, completes your hand (a set, pair or special hand) then say "Mhing" and show your hand to win.
- If the last discard will complete a set (Sequence or Triplet) in your hand it may be claimed (say "Chow" or "Pung"). You must then lay the completed set down (expose it) and discard one card.
Claiming can cause skipping of players which is normal. When more than one player makes the same claim the priority is "Mhing" then "Pung" then "Chow". For ties the player closest to the left of the discarder has priority.
Flowers are counted only as bonus points towards a winning hand and are immediately replaced when drawn (say "Bonus") and set to one side.
Jokers are wild and can be used as anything the player declares except flowers and cannot be changed after being used in an exposed set. One or more Jokers can be used in combination with other tiles, two jokers can be used as any pair, and three jokers can be used as any Triplet or Sequence.
Scoring
Only the winner of the hand can score credits by using any/all combinations of the Mhing scoring elements (higher scoring elements already contain lower related scoring elements). A hand can score from 0 to 41 credits (131,072 points, example: 123B 123B 123B 123B 55B FFFFFFFF). Once credits are tallied they are then converted to points and the points are added to the players' total. Deal passes left & another hand is played.
If Playing for Money
Everyone pays the winner the winning hand value. Point conversion is a penny a point (rounded to 10 points) with a limit of 100 points, or use the supplied "Betting" table (2 or less credits pays nothing).

Scoring Details
Only the winner of the hand can score credits by using any/all combinations of the Mhing scoring elements (higher scoring elements already contain lower related scoring elements). Scoring therefore is based on which elements are applicable and which are not. The following example and description will help explain how this works.
A winning hand is scored for any and all combinations of scoring elements that it qualifies for. An example of this is the scoring of a hand for the highest possible score:
123B 123B 123B 123B 55B FFFFFFFF
This hand scores credits for six different elements:
- Sequences Only: 1
- Pair of 5's: 1
- All eight Flowers: 8
- All Low: 5
- Identical Double Sequence (6x): 18
- One Suit Only w/no Honors: 8
- Total: 41 Credits (131,072 points)
This example shows that a hand can score for many different combinations. It is important to become familiar with the different scoring elements, how they can interact and to count the winning hand carefully when scoring.
For other winning hands a few scoring elements may imply additional scoring but do not score for them. The higher scoring elements that already contain lower related scoring elements that do not score are:
- A Royal Run already contains a Broken Royal Run and does not score for both.
- A hand of All Suits + Winds + Dragons does not also score for a Wind or Dragon triplet since one of those is required.
- All three Dragon Triplets already contains Dragon triplets and does not also score for each Dragon Triplet.
- A hand of Seven Pairs does not also score for pairs of 2's, 5's or 8's.
- A Nothing Connects w/ALL Honors already contains a Nothing Connects and does not score for both.
- Non-Standard hands do not score for other elements except flowers because they do not consist of four sets and a pair.
Scoring Notes
- Only the winning hand scores, other players do not score.
- A winning hand can score zero credits.
- Credits are converted to points using the Credits to Points conversion table and added to the winning players' total.
- The first player to reach 500 points (or more) wins.
