How do the feedback marks work on a code (Mastermind) puzzle?

One mark type means a symbol is correct and in the right slot; the other means it is in the code but in the wrong slot. The order of marks is meaningless, and a guess with fewer marks than symbols means the unmarked symbols are not in the code.
