- 60 Bean cards (4 colors/sets of 15 cards). Breakdown of each Color cards: 2 "1"s, 3 "2"s, 4 "3"s, 3 "4"s, 2 "5"s, and 1 "X"
- 2 Store boards (double-sided). Front: for 3 to 4 players. Back: for 2 players.
- Player Color tokens (4 Colors x 2): 8 tokens
- Merchant cubes (4 Colors x 7): 28 cubes
Game Setup
In a 3- or 4-player game, all Bean cards are used. In a 2-player game, remove all the cards with the icon at the bottom center (a pair of bean sprouts) and put them back into the box.
Shuffle the Bean cards and form a deck.
Make space/slots to place 3 Bean cards in a row on the left of the deck. These slots are called Field 1, Field 2, and Field 3. And make a discard area on the right of the deck.
Layout, left to right: Field 1, Field 2, Field 3, Deck, Discard area.
Draw 3 Bean cards from the top of the deck and place a card face down on each of Fields 1, 2, and 3. Place the Store board on the table with its applicable side face up according to the number of players. Icons on each side of the board indicate the number of players (2 players; 3-4 players).
Individual Player Setup
Each player prepares as follows. First, choose your color and receive the following:
- 2 Player Color tokens of your color
- 5 Merchant cubes of your color (4 cubes in a 4-player game)
- 2 Bean cards (Dealt from the top of the deck as your hand)
Place one of your Player Color tokens on the cell "0" on the Mamey track on the Store board. Keep the other token beside you to indicate your player color. After receiving the Merchant cubes of your color, keep the remaining Merchant cubes of your color near the Store board. This is called the "Stock".
Determining the Start Player
The player who has explained this game's rules or the owner of the game is the start player. Otherwise, determine the start player in whatever way you like.
(Sample initial layout for 4 players: the start player has a Start player marker; each player has their Merchant cubes and a hand of 2 Bean cards; the Store board lies in the middle with the Fields and Deck below it.)
Order of Play
Take turns clockwise from the start player. On your turn, take one of the following 3 actions.
- Harvest Beans
- Sell Beans
- Hire a Merchant
After taking one of these actions once, your turn is over and the turn of play moves to the player on your left. Continue like this until the game ending condition (to be described later) is met.
1. Harvest Beans
Take cards from a field and add it to your hand.
Note: You cannot take the "Harvest Beans" action if you have 7 or more Bean cards in your hand. If other players ask the number of cards in your hand, tell them honestly.
Take all the cards in Field 1 and check what is on them. After checking the cards, choose to Receive or Return them.
If you Receive, receive all the cards taken from that field.
You can receive and have 7 or more cards in your hand.
If you Return the cards, return and place all of them to the field face up.
If you return the cards, take and check the cards from Field 2 and choose to Receive or Return them likewise.
If you return the cards from Field 2, take and check the cards from Field 3 and choose to Receive or Return them likewise.
If you return the cards from Field 3, draw 1 Bean card from the top of the deck and add it to your hand.
After making a choice and adding the Bean card(s) to your hand, replenish Bean cards in the fields.
By replenishing, draw from the top of the deck and add 1 Bean card face down to each field where you checked the cards. (The field from which you received Bean cards is also included in the "fields where you checked the cards".)
If you received the card not from any field but from the deck, add 1 Bean card face down to each of Fields 1, 2, and 3.
After the deck runs out of Bean cards, the fields will not be replenished, resulting in some fields becoming vacant.
You can also choose the action to "Harvest Beans" from such vacant fields in the same way as you do from other fields. In such a case, end your turn without adding any Bean cards to your hand.
Example
Player A first checks the card in Field 1.
Player A does not want the card in Field 1, so Player A returns it to Field 1 face up and checks the card in Field 2.
Player A adds the card from Field 2 to their hand. Then the cards are replenished.
First, a Bean card from the top of the deck is added face down to Field 1.
Next, a Bean card from the top of the deck is added face down to Field 2. The cards have been replenished and Player A's turn is over.
2. Sell Beans
Sell the Bean cards in your hand to earn Mamey.
Take this action in the following order, from (1) to (3).
- Choose Bean cards
- Place a Merchant Cube
- Put down the Sold Bean Cards
(1) Choose Bean Cards
You can sell the Bean cards in your hand only in one of the following three sets.
- Consecutive cards of the same color
- Cards of the same color and number
- Cards of the same number and different colors
Note: Multiple same color cards must not be included.
After choosing the set of cards, check the Store board. The 3 rows of the Store board's table indicate acceptable sets of cards, namely "Consecutive cards of the same color", "Cards of the same color and number", and "Cards of the same number and different colors" from the top.
The columns of the Store board's table indicate the "required number of Bean cards" to sell. The numbered squares in the Store board's cells indicate the Mamey you receive by selling your Bean cards.
(Store board illustration: the columns are labelled "2 cards" and "3 cards".) Caption: "You can sell 3 same number cards of different colors for 6 or 4 Mamey."
(2) Place a Merchant Cube
Choose a numbered square not occupied by a Merchant cube in a cell of the Store board's table and play Bean cards face up according to the matching row (sets of cards) and column (number of cards).
(1) Place one of your Merchant cubes on the numbered square matching the Bean cards you have played.
For example, when playing 3 consecutive cards of the same color, you must place your Merchant cube in one of the following two numbered squares. (Example shows the two squares in the "Consecutive cards of the same color" row, 3 cards column.)
The numbered squares indicate the Mamey you will earn at the end of the game, so a higher number is recommended.
Important
- You cannot place your Merchant cube on a numbered square already occupied by another Merchant cube (including your cube).
- You cannot play sets of cards whereby you cannot place your Merchant cube on the Store board. In this case, you cannot choose the "Sell Beans" action.
- You can only place 1 Merchant cube on each turn. Thus, you cannot play multiple sets of Bean cards to place multiple Merchant cubes by single "Sell Beans" action.
(3) Put Down the Sold Bean Cards
After playing Bean cards from your hand, place them face down in front of you, making sure that they do not get mixed with the cards in your hand or discarded cards. Then, at the end of the game, you will earn 1 Mamey per Bean Bonus icon on these cards.
Bean cards numbered "2" and "4" each has 1 Bean Bonus icon on it. Bean cards numbered "1" and "5" each has 2 Bean Bonus icons.
Bean cards placed face down must not be checked by anyone, including the player who played them, until the scoring at the end of the game.
Joker Cards
A Joker card can be played as any of the numbered Bean cards. It can also be played as a card numbered "6". This makes it possible to play up to 6 consecutive cards of the same color.
Joker cards can be used with other Bean number cards and Joker cards.
Example: 3 consecutive cards of the same color (Joker card substituting the card "2").
Each Joker card can be used as any number card of its color, and its color cannot be changed.
It is possible to use multiple Joker cards for single "Sell Beans" action.
Important You must put one of your Merchant cubes in your hand back into the stock for playing each Joker card. Otherwise, you cannot use the Joker card.
(Icon: this icon tells you to put 1 Merchant cube back to the stock when playing the Joker card.)
3. Hire a Merchant
Discard one of the Bean cards in your hand face up in the discard area and take 1 Merchant cube of your color from the stock.
You may check the cards in the discard area at all times.
If there is not any Merchant cube of your color in the stock, just discard 1 Bean card without taking any Merchant cube.
You can discard only 1 Bean card by each "Hire a Merchant" action.
Game Ending Conditions
If the deck runs out of cards when replenishing Bean cards in the fields, the current player completes their turn, and then all the players, including the player during whose turn the deck has run out of cards, take one turn each. Then end the game and start scoring.
After the deck runs out of cards, the cards in the fields will not be replenished.
Scoring after the Game Ends
The Bean cards remaining in the players' hands cannot be changed to Mamey, so discard them. Record each player's earned Mamey by advancing their Player Color tokens on the Mamey track.
The Mamey earned is calculated by following 3 means.
- Merchant cubes remaining in the player's hand
- Merchant cubes on the Store board
- Bean cards sold by the "Sell Beans" action
(1) Merchant cubes remaining in the player's hand Receive 1 Mamey for each Merchant cube remaining your hand. The Merchant cubes in the stock do not count as any Mamey.
(2) Merchant cubes on the Store board Each player receives the Mamey equal to the total of the numbers on the squares occupied by their Merchant cubes.
It is recommended to remove the Merchant cubes one by one from the Store board and advance the corresponding Player Color token on the Mamey track each time a cube is removed and the number under it is revealed.
(3) Bean cards sold by the "Sell Beans" action The cards placed face down in front of each player by the "Sell Beans" action are turned face up. Then the player who has played those cards receives 1 Mamey for each Bean Bonus icon on those cards.
Add up the Mamey you have earned. The player who has earned most Mamey wins. In case of a tie, the player among the winners with the most number of cards put down in front of them wins. If that is also a tie, the winners share the victory.
Example
Player A's color is White. Player A receives 2 Mamey for the 2 Merchant cubes remaining in their hand.
Player A has placed their Merchant cubes on the following numbered squares. Player A receives 18 Mamey from the Store board: 5+4+5+4 = 18 Mamey.
The cards placed in front of Player A have 5 Bean Bonus icons (= 5 Mamey) on them in total.
2 + 18 + 5 = 25 Mamey in total!
