Object of the Game
Everyone plays at the same time in Make 'n' Break: Architect! Using your folding rulers, you rebuild the tasks shown on the building cards. Whoever manages this fastest scores points and wins!
Contents
- 4 folding rulers
- 1 hourglass
- 80 double-sided building cards
- 60 point chips (values 1, 3 and 5)
Preparation
- First take the building cards and shuffle them. Decide whether you want to play with the easier green side or the harder yellow side. Then place them as a face-down stack in the middle of the table so that the chosen side is hidden. Place the hourglass next to the card stack.
- Each player receives a folding ruler. Carefully unfold it completely and lay it on the table in front of you.
- Place the point chips nearby as a supply. Now you are ready to start!
Caution: Make sure you do not damage the folding rulers or injure anyone. Leave enough space between the players for this.
So that the folding rulers do not break, do not bend them, do not fold them upward, and do not pull them apart with a jerk.
Sequence of Play
Whoever was most recently at the hardware store turns over the top building card from the stack. They place it in the middle of the table where everyone can see it and call out "Start!". From now on, everyone plays at the same time: all players try to rebuild the revealed task with their folding ruler as quickly as possible!
There are two kinds of tasks:
Single-Colour Tasks
Here you only have to rebuild the shape correctly. The colours of the folding ruler segments do not matter.
Multi-Colour Tasks
Here too you must rebuild the shape correctly. In addition, the specified colours must be visible in the correct places.
Example: On the house, the floor must be yellow and the chimney must be white. The roof and the walls are black on the card, meaning any colour is allowed. For the roof and walls, the colours of the folding ruler segments are therefore not important.
The first player who has rebuilt the task correctly calls out "First!" and turns the hourglass over. This player may no longer keep building, and places their folding ruler on the table in front of them. As soon as the hourglass has run through, they call out "Stop!". At the latest at this point, all other players must also stop building.
Now the points are awarded: all players who rebuilt the task correctly receive the points shown on the card (1, 2 or 3) from the supply.
If the player who finished first rebuilt the task correctly, they additionally receive one bonus point. If they rebuilt it incorrectly, they must instead give up one penalty point (but only if they already have at least one point).
Then the building card is removed from the game. All players fully unfold their folding rulers again, and play continues with the next round: the player who finished first in the previous round reveals the new building card, and again everyone frantically folds, flips and builds!
End of the Game
As soon as, after scoring, at least one player has 12 or more points, the game ends. The player with the most points then wins.
In the event of a tie, the players involved play one more task (without the hourglass). Whoever rebuilds that task correctly fastest is the winner.
Tips & Variants
Building Tips
- Now and then you have to hide some folding-ruler segments behind others so that they cannot be seen.
- Many tasks have several possible solutions.
- Sometimes you have to turn the folding ruler over to find the right solution!
Variants
For an even funnier game, you can agree that the leading player, or even all players, must build under more difficult conditions. For example, try it with only one hand, behind your back (looking over your own shoulder is allowed), or, for single-colour tasks, even with your eyes closed!
