Components & Setup
- Place the Kitchen Mat (A) in the centre of play.
- Align the Whisker Chef Mat (B) against one of the Kitchen's sides, such that there is a column of Ingredients in the Kitchen under each Whisker Card slot.
- Place the Pantry (C), as well as the two Order Queues (D) next to it.
- Give each player a Countertop Mat (E) and a single Sugar (F) to be placed at the bottom of their Sugar Jar. Keep the rest of the Sugar in a pile nearby.
- Place the Hearts (G) in a pile for easy access as well.
- Shuffle the 54 Ingredient Cards (H). Randomly give two unique Ingredients to each player. Then place one Ingredient on all but one random corner in the Kitchen. Place Macaraccoon (I) in this spot.
- Fill the Pantry with Ingredients, and keep the remaining Ingredients in a Draw Pile on the marked area.
- Shuffle the Whisker Cards (J) and place one face-up on each of the four spots on the Whisker Chef Mat. Keep the remaining Whiskers in a face-down Draw Deck to its side.
- Shuffle the Order Cards (K) and fill the Order Queues with them, face-up. Keep the remaining Order Cards in a single face-down Draw Deck beside both Queues.
- Finally, the last person to have baked a dessert starts the game.
Imp! The Ingredients go on separate Plates on their Countertops.
Imp! If playing with 5 players, use the 12 extra Ingredients as well (1 of each base, and 2 of each spread and topping), for a total of 66 Ingredients.
You are ready to play!
Overview
Players compete to fulfill customers' Orders as seen on the Order Queues. You'll need to expertly collect and layer the required Ingredients in the correct Order, earning Sugar that can be spent in various ways, and Hearts that ultimately decide the winner.
- Take turns taking one of three actions:
- Collecting an Ingredient from the Kitchen to use in your dishes
- Serving a completed Order and satisfying a customer or
- Seeking the help of a friendly Whisker Chef for wondrous abilities.
- And if you've saved some up, perhaps even eat a little Sugar on the side to boost your energy and take extra actions.
- When the line of hungry customers runs out, the player with the most Hearts is crowned the next Bake Master.
Ingredients
Ingredients are of three types: Bases, Spreads and Toppings.
- Bases must always go at the bottom of your dish (Pancake, Waffle, Cheesecake, Lemon Tart)
- Spreads go on top of your Base, and beneath all Toppings (Cream, Chocolate, Jam)
- Toppings must always be at the very top of the dish, above the Base and all Spreads (Kiwis, Blueberries)
Know Your Countertop
The three Plates on your Countertop are where you stack your Ingredients to create dishes to Serve. Remember, only a dish that matches an Order card - with the exact identical Ingredients in the correct sequence - can be Served. Even extra Ingredients, duplicates, or a single Ingredient in the wrong place can spoil the entire dish!
Sugarmouth's Whiskers all have fun unique names. Write yours on your Countertop (A).
- When you get an Ingredient, you may place it on any Plate on your Countertop (A). If it is the only Ingredient there, great! Nothing else to worry about. If the Plate you choose already has an Ingredient or a Stack of Ingredients, you'll have to immediately place the new Ingredient at the very top or bottom of the Ingredient or Stack. You cannot place an Ingredient in the middle of an existing Stack.
- Ingredients can only be placed at the very top or bottom of an existing stack, and never in the middle.
- If you don't want to place the Ingredient you just obtained, you must discard it. Just keep in mind that being wasteful won't get you very far!
- At any point in the game, you may move an entire Stack of Ingredients to the very top or bottom of another dish.
- You may also discard an entire Stack of Ingredients - wasteful for sure, but sometimes necessary. Moving or discarding Stacks of Ingredients does not take up your actions, and can be done anytime, even during another player's turn.
- To the right of your Plating Stations is your Sugar Jar (B). If you ever get any Sugar, you'll store it here, dropping it into one of the lowest available empty slots in the Jar. If you ever need to spend Sugar from the Jar, take it from one of the topmost slots.
Imp! Oh, and once two or more Ingredients are in a Stack, they are permanently stuck together and can never be separated. Bake wisely!
Playing the Game
Players take turns in clockwise Order. You can usually only take a single action on your turn, after which play passes to the next player. You must take an action and cannot choose to pass. There are three potential actions to pick from on your turn.
Action #1: Picking an Ingredient
Macaraccoon hands you Ingredients from the Kitchen to place on your personal Countertop. The Pantry refills the Kitchen, giving you a window into Ingredients that will eventually be ready to use.
- Move Macaraccoon to an adjacent (not diagonal) spot in the Kitchen. Pick up the Ingredient there.
- Place it on your Countertop (or discard it), following the Ingredient placement rules explained earlier.
- Pick any available Ingredient from the Pantry and place it on the empty Kitchen spot, where Maca previously was.
- Don't like your options when picking an Ingredient? When selecting one, you can spend one Sugar from your Sugar Jar by placing it on an adjacent Ingredient, to have Maca 'Jump' over it. Pick up an Ingredient that is adjacent to the Ingredient jumped over.
- You can only spend one Sugar to Jump, no more. And be careful! The next player to pick up the Ingredient Jumped over will receive the Sugar on it - even if it isn't you!
- The Pantry only refills when all seven Ingredients have been picked up from it. In that case, immediately refill it with Ingredients from the Pantry Draw Pile. This way, all Ingredients will be placed in the Kitchen for sure.
Action #2: Serving an Order
Identify an Order from either of the Order Queues that you can Serve. You must have the matching dish precisely replicated on your Countertop. If you cannot Serve an Order, you cannot take this action.
- Customers wait patiently in the two Queues, from left to right. The leftmost customer in each Queue has been waiting the longest, and naturally expects to be Served first. You wouldn't be able to Serve someone further down the Queue without angering the Customers you skipped, and that's no good for your reputation. (Imp! There is one way to skip over them anyway, though... by sliding them a little Sugar under the counter.)
- If the Order you are fulfilling is the second or third from the left in the Queue, place one Sugar on each customer skipped. You cannot Serve this Order if you do not have enough Sugar to pay from your Sugar Jar.
- Be careful here as well, as Customers that have been pacified with Sugar will gladly give them back once their hunger is satiated. A player who fulfills an Order with Sugar placed on it gains that Sugar as a bonus.
- Keep in mind, both Order Queues are separate, so you never have to pay Sugar to one Queue if you skip over customers in the other.
- Discard the matching Stack of Ingredients from your Countertop and take the completed Order Card. Place it in your Completed Orders zone next to your mat, making sure that all Hearts on any other Orders you previously completed are still visible to the rest of the table.
- Take Sugar from the supply equal to the number shown on the card. If any Sugar was placed on top of the Order Card earlier, take it as well. All Hearts on this card will be scored at the end of the game, so do not take any Heart tokens shown on the card. However, take one or two Heart tokens from the supply if you jumped over one or two Orders respectively when serving.
- Immediately fill the blank space in the Queue by sliding all Orders to its right one space to the left. Then place a new Order face-up from the Order Deck into the now empty rightmost slot in the Queue. If this was the last card in the Deck, the Game End is triggered. See Ending the Game.
Example (diagram): the player serves the Order that is third in the Queue (step 1), placing one Sugar on each of the two customers skipped (step 2), takes the Order card (step 3), and (step 4) collects 3 Sugar and 1 Heart token.
Action #3: Using a Whisker Power
Expert baker 'Whiskers' shuffle around the bakery, ready to help! Each has a Power unique to them, as well as a Column Power of picking an Ingredient. Whiskers won't assist you for free though! You'll have to bribe them with a little Sugar, or some of your precious Ingredients, to enlist their aid.
A Whisker Card shows: Name; Cost to use (Sugar OR Ingredients); Whisker Power; Column Power.
- Pick a Whisker whose Powers you want to use. You must be able to pay one of its costs.
- Pay Sugar to the supply equal to the number on the Whisker Card OR Pay Ingredients to the discard pile equal to or more than the number shown. (Imp! Keep in mind that you can never separate a stack of Ingredients, not even to pay a Whisker cost!)
- In either Order, use the unique Whisker Power, and the common Column Power. Neither power is mandatory, but must be used in this Action, unless stated otherwise.
- To use the Whisker Power, follow the text on the card. To use the Column Power, pick up any one Ingredient in the Kitchen in the same column as the Whisker Chef is in, immediately moving Macaraccoon to that spot. Then take an Ingredient from the Pantry and place it in the old empty spot in the Kitchen.
- Slide all Whiskers to the left one space, including the one you just used. The leftmost one slides off the Whisker Mat into a Whisker Discard Pile. Open a new Whisker from the Whisker Deck face-up on the rightmost empty slot. If this Deck is empty, shuffle all discarded Whiskers to create a new Deck.
Sugar Rush!
Sugar is more than just a barter tool in Sugarmouth - it's also a fantastic source of energy. There's nothing stopping you from sneaking a few nibbles from your hard-earned Sugar to get a valuable boost in speed and efficiency!
- Normally, after taking one Action, your turn is complete. However, right before passing your turn to the next player, you may instead declare that you are taking another action with a Sugar Rush.
- To Sugar Rush, pay the entire topmost layer, that has at least one Sugar, from your Sugar Jar to the Supply (which could be anywhere from one to three Sugar). The lowest layer in your Sugar Jar, marked in pink, is your Rainy Day savings, and you cannot spend this layer to Sugar Rush.
- Immediately take any one Action.
- You may Sugar Rush multiple times in the same turn, provided you have enough Sugar, but you must have no actions left each time you Sugar Rush.
Ending the Game
The customers have finally stopped pouring in, leaving full and satisfied. After a long day, everyone's tired - but excited as well. Who's earned the most love, and is going to become Bake Master of Sugarmouth?
- As soon as the Order Deck runs out, the game end is triggered. Players complete the current round, then play one more round, finishing with the player to the right of the Starting player. This way, everyone plays an equal number of turns.
- Count the number of Hearts shown on all your completed Orders, plus any Heart Tokens earned. The player with the most Hearts wins!
On a Tie
The player with the most Sugar wins. If still tied, the player with the most Ingredients on their Plating Stations wins. If still tied, the player with the most served Orders wins, and if still a tie, the tied players share the victory, and Sugarmouth gets to look up to two Bake Masters!
A Couple Tidbits
- At any given point, only the Kitchen spot Macaraccoon is on should have no Ingredient. Remember to move Maca when picking an Ingredient, even with a Whisker ability.
- Your Sugar Jar can only hold nine Sugar. Any excess earned is discarded.
- You must take an action on your turn. You cannot pass.
- You can only Sugar Rush when you have no actions left on your turn.
- When you use a Whisker Card, it is not discarded. After you are done using the Whisker Card, move all Whiskers one space to the left on the Whisker Mat, regardless of which Whisker you used.
