Setup: The Dread Realm Nightmare

You are playing Nightmare mode.

Begin with the standard quest deck and encounter deck for The Dread Realm scenario.

Remove the following cards, in the specified quantities, from the standard encounter deck:

3x Witch of Angmar 2x A Fell Dread 1x Unholy Crypt 1x Sinister Dungeon 2x Dead Lord 3x Terror of the North

Then, shuffle the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck into the remainder of the standard The Dread Realm encounter deck.

Finally, flip this setup card over and place it next to the quest deck. Its effect remains active throughout the game, which is now ready to begin.

Encounter Cards

The Nightmare Deck contains 19 encounter cards, shuffled into the standard encounter deck of The Dread Realm scenario as set out in the setup text above. Each entry gives the card's set number and copies as printed on the Hall of Beorn database (for example "#2 (x2)" is set number 2, two copies), its type, any keyword, its printed stats, and its traits.

Stats are given with the labels the Hall of Beorn card page shows (Threat, Attack, Defense, Hit Points) where it gives them. The bracketed number on each enemy and location is unlabelled on the database page and on the card scan, and is kept in brackets as printed. The number in brackets is not one of the labelled stats.

Silent Guardian

#2 (x2) · Enemy · Stat line as printed: (36) · Threat 4 · Attack 2 · Defense 4 · Hit Points 10 · Traits: Undead.

While you are engaged with Silent Guardian it gains:

"Forced: The first time you play an event card each round, instead of discarding that card after playing it, reanimate it."

Necromancer of Carn Dûm

#3 (x3) · Enemy · Stat line as printed: (28) · Threat 2 · Attack X · Defense 3 · Hit Points 3 · Traits: Sorcerer.

Forced: When Necromancer of Carn Dûm would attack you, instead reanimate the top card of your deck and deal it each of the Necromancer of Carn Dûm's shadow cards.

Inner Sanctum

#4 (x2) · Location · Stat line as printed: Threat 6 · (4) · Traits: Carn Dûm. Underground.

Progress cannot be placed on Inner Sanctum while it is in the staging area.

Travel: Discard the top 3 cards of the encounter deck. Resolve the 'when revealed' effects of each Sorcery card discarded by this effect.

Cursed Halls

#5 (x3) · Location · Stat line as printed: Threat 3 · (5) · Traits: Carn Dûm. Underground.

While Cursed Halls is in the staging area, Sorcery attachments are immune to player card effects.

Shadow: Until the end of the phase, attacking enemy gets +1 Attack and +1 Defense for each Reanimated Dead engaged with you.

Power Beyond Death

#6 (x3) · Treachery · Keyword: Sorcery, Surge · Stat line: none.

When Revealed: Attach to the main quest. (Counts as a Condition attachment with the text: "Daechanar gets +2 Defense.")

Shadow: If this attack destroys a character, resolve this card's 'when revealed' effect.

Daechanar's Curse

#7 (x3) · Treachery · Keyword: Sorcery, Surge · Stat line: none.

When Revealed: Attach Daechanar's Curse to the top of the first player's deck. (Counts as a Condition attachment with the text: "The next time a player would draw 1 or more cards from attached deck, reanimate those cards instead. Then, discard Daechanar's Curse.")

All is Lost

#8 (x2) · Treachery · Keyword: Sorcery · Stat line: none.

When Revealed: Attach All is Lost to the first player's threat dial. (Counts as a Condition attachment with the text: "Each time you attack a Reanimated Dead, raise your threat by 1.")

Shadow: If attacking enemy is a Reanimated Dead, it attacks again after this attack.

The Witch-king's Gift

#9 (x1) · Encounter Side Quest · Quest stage 8 · Time 5.

Time 5. Forced: When the last time counter is removed from this quest, reanimate each card in each player's discard pile. Then, remove The Witch-king's Gift from the game.

When this quest is defeated, place it in the encounter discard pile.

Transcription Notes

The following corrections and judgement calls were made against the source text. Each is either a fix of an obvious database or typing error, or a point where the source is unclear and is shown as such. None adds a rule.

  • Sources checked. The setup card was read from its Hall of Beorn card-detail page only; its scan could not be fetched. Each encounter card was read from its Hall of Beorn card-detail page and compared with its full-size card scan.
  • Stat labels. Threat, Attack, Defense and Hit Points are the labels the Hall of Beorn page attaches to each stat. The number in brackets on enemies and locations is unlabelled on the page and on the scan.
  • Necromancer of Carn Dûm attack. The Hall of Beorn page prints the Attack value as "X". The card scan shows it as a dash. It is transcribed as X, the value on the database page.
  • Witch-king's Gift. The quest's stage number (8) is printed in a red circle on the scan; it is shown here as "Quest stage 8". The Hall of Beorn page prints "reanimated each card"; the card text transcribed above reads "reanimate each card" as on the scan. The flavour line on the card is left out.
  • Power Beyond Death. The defence icon in "Daechanar gets +2" is written as the word "Defense".
  • Cursed Halls. The attack and defence icons in the Shadow text are written as the words "Attack" and "Defense".
  • Setup card flavour. The epigraph on the setup card (a quotation from The Return of the King) is left out, as flavour text.
  • Quest Cards 1. The product listing gives "Quest Cards 1" in addition to the 19 encounter cards and the setup card. The Witch-king's Gift is the only quest card in the Hall of Beorn database, and it is already counted among the 19 encounter cards. No separate quest card was found, so none is transcribed here, and none has been reconstructed. The listing's count is unresolved.
