Nightmare Mode

You are playing Nightmare mode.

Setup: Each player takes 1 hidden card. The players cannot win the game unless The Crossroads and Black Númenórean are in the victory display.

Setup: The Blood of Gondor

Begin with the standard quest deck and encounter deck for the The Blood of Gondor scenario.

Remove the following cards, in the specified quantities, from the standard encounter deck:

1x Black Númenorean 2x Evil Crow 2x Lying in Wait 4x The Dark Woods 1x Orc Rabble 1x Orc Arsonist 1x Scourge of Mordor

Then, shuffle the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck into the remainder of the standard The Blood of Gondor encounter deck.

Finally, flip this setup card over and place it next to the quest deck. Its effects remain active throughout the game, which is now ready to begin.

Encounter Cards: The Blood of Gondor

The Nightmare Deck contains 19 encounter cards, numbered #2 to #8 on the card faces (the setup card is #1). The card names are followed by their copy count in the deck, written ×N. Stat lines are given as printed: enemies in the order engagement cost, threat, attack, defense, hit points; locations in the order threat, then the number in parentheses, as printed.

Black Númenorean (Enemy; ×1) Stat line as printed: ( 35 ) · X · 5 · 4 · 9 Mordor. X is the total number of hidden cards in the game. Forced: When Black Númenorean engages you, turn all hidden cards in your play area faceup. Forced: At the end of the round, each player must raise his threat by 1 for each hidden card in his play area. Victory 3

Orc Trickster (Enemy; ×4) Stat line as printed: ( 20 ) · 3 · 3 · 2 · 2 Orc. Forced: After Orc Trickster is turned faceup as a hidden card, it makes an immediate attack against the engaged player. Forced: When Orc Trickster would be damaged, a random player takes it facedown as a hidden card in his play area instead.

Uruk Marksman (Enemy; ×3) Stat line as printed: ( 40 ) · 4 · 2 · 2 · 4 Orc. Uruk. Mordor. Archery 3. Forced: After Uruk Marksman is turned faceup as a hidden card, deal 3 damage to a character controlled by the engaged player and return Uruk Marksman to the staging area.

Edge of Ithilien (Location; ×3) Stat line as printed: 3 · ( 6 ) Ithilien. Forest. Archery X. X is the highest number of hidden cards in any player's play area. Shadow: Turn 1 hidden card in your play area faceup. If it is a treachery card, attacking enemy makes an additional attack after this one.

Mountains of Shadow (Location; ×3) Stat line as printed: 4 · ( 4 ) Mountain. While Mountains of Shadow is the active location, it gains: "Forced: After you turn 1 or more hidden cards faceup, take 1 hidden card." Shadow: Either take 2 hidden cards, or this attack is considered undefended.

Surrounded by Shadow (Treachery; ×3) Doomed 1. When Revealed: Each player must either take 1 hidden card for each questing hero he controls, or remove one hero he controls from the quest for each hidden card in his play area.

Sudden Onslaught (Treachery; ×2) When Revealed: Each player turns each hidden card in his play area faceup. Each player then takes hidden cards equal to the number of hidden cards he just turned faceup. Shadow: Take 1 hidden card. Then, turn 1 hidden card in your play area faceup.

Transcription Notes

The following corrections and judgment calls were made against the source text. Each is a fix of an obvious database artifact, not a change to the rules.

  • The Mountains of Shadow text follows its own card-detail page, which includes the line the card gives to the active location in quotation marks ("Forced: After you turn 1 or more hidden cards faceup, take 1 hidden card."), followed by the Shadow line. An earlier draft of this card omitted the quoted line; it is restored here.
  • The setup card prints "Black Númenórean" in its victory condition and "Black Númenorean" in its removal list and card title. Each is kept as printed. The accent difference may be an inconsistency in the source.
  • The Surrounded by Shadow card page labels its type "Traîtrise" (French). It is rendered as "Treachery", the type of the other treachery cards in this set.
  • The source does not label the numbers on the enemy and location stat lines. They are reproduced in the order the source lists them, in a "Stat line as printed" line, and not assigned labels, except that the enemy engagement cost is given first, as in the base rulebook.
  • The source gives each encounter card's deck membership and quantity. Those quantities are reproduced as "×N" after each card name.
