  • 9 Alignment Cards
  • 9 Mode Cards (3 Wish Cards, 6 Rules Cards)

Before You Play

Logic & Lore has two main ways to play. If you are new to logic games, we suggest playing the Star Light version. Otherwise, we suggest you try the Star Bright version. If more challenge is still needed, consider adding a Blackhole or two to the game. There are also several other Modes described on the Mode Cards.

Setup

  1. Lay out the 9 Alignment cards in order 1-9 between the two players. NOTE: Use the Question side for Star Bright.
  2. Give each player one set of Star Cards, 1-9. Each player shuffles their cards, then deals them face down in a straight line in front of them. NOTE: If any player is younger than 10, they may find their age and start the game with it revealed and aligned.
  3. Give each player 2 reference cards. If playing Star Bright, give them each a set of Player tokens.
  4. Set the Tracking Tokens to the side. You are ready to play.

Setup Star Light

The setup diagram shows the 9 Alignment Cards (numbered 1-9) laid in a row at the center of the table, with a Star Line of 9 face-down Star Cards from each player running alongside the Alignment Cards on their own side, and the shared pool of Tracking Tokens set off to the side.

NOTE: If players would prefer to use paper and pencil to make notes instead of using Tracking tokens, they can do that.

Goal

The goal is to align all of your star cards in order 1 through 9, matching their lane position, before your opponent does. Your cards are face down at the start of the game and as you find their correct position, they will be revealed and locked into alignment. The first player to align all of their cards is the winner.

On Your Turn

The player who last stargazed will take the first turn.

NOTE: The first turn on Star Bright will not include step 3.

On your turn, take the following steps in this exact order.

  1. Move the Heavens (optional): Rearrange any of your face-down cards into what you believe is the proper position. You may move as many as you'd like, as long as they are not face-up, aligned cards.
  2. Align the Stars (optional): If you think all of your remaining face-down cards are in the correct position, you may flip them all face-up. If they are all in the correct position you win! If one or more cards are not correct, you immediately lose, giving the victory to your opponent!!
  3. Divine the Cosmos (Star Bright only, required): You must select one of the Alignment Cards and place one of your Player Tokens on it. You may only select Alignment Cards that do not already have any Player Tokens on it. If all Alignment Cards have Player Tokens on them, you may remove one of your opponent's tokens and replace it with yours. Note: Questions 1 and 9 are always available to both players; therefore, no Player Tokens may be placed there.
  4. Choose Focus (required): Choose any two cards from your Star Line and hold them up so only your opponent can see them. DO NOT LOOK AT THE CARDS. If you accidentally see any card faces, shuffle all of your face-down cards and deal them back to your star line. Suggestion: Try to hold the cards over their respective lanes to make the next step easier.
  5. Search the Sky (required): While holding your cards up, ask the Search the Sky questions (p. 6, 7) to your opponent in the exact order listed. You may not change the order of the questions, but you may skip questions. Your opponent must respond truthfully to each question. If you ever receive a "yes" to any question, your Search the Sky step ends immediately and you do not continue asking questions. You can then move onto the final Move the Heavens step. If at least one card is aligned, flip the aligned cards face-up. If playing on Star Bright, remove two of your Player tokens of your choice from the Question cards. If you only have one Player token, then remove that token. See the pages 6-7 for the list of questions and accompanying instructions.
  6. Move the Heavens (optional): Just like in Step 1, you may rearrange one or more of your face-down cards into new positions.

End of Turn: After a player has completed all the above steps, their turn is over and play moves to the other player.

Note About Tracking Tokens: These are a shared pool of tokens. Players may use these tokens however they wish. The only limitation is that they cannot interfere with the other player's Star Line.

If players would prefer to use paper and pencil to make notes instead of using Tracking tokens, that is allowed.

Ask your opponent these questions while you hold up the cards you selected in your Choose Focus stage. You must ask questions in order and keep asking until you get a yes.

Are either of these cards aligned? (card number matches the lane it is currently in)

  • If one or both of the cards are aligned your opponent points to each aligned card. Those cards are then flipped face up. Go to Step 6, Move the Heavens.
  • If not, move to the next question.

Are these cards neighbors?

  • If the cards are sequential in order, the opponent answers "Yes". (For example, 5 & 4 are neighbors.) Return the cards face down and go to Step 6, Move the Heavens.
  • If not, move to the next question.

Are these cards symmetric? (Do these cards add up to 10?)

  • If the cards are equally distant from the center when aligned (which also means they add up to 10) the opponent answers "Yes". Return the cards face down and go to Step 6, Move the Heavens.
  • Note: Cards that add to 10 have the same background to make this easier to identify.
  • If not, move to the next question.

Which is greatest?

  • The opponent points to the card that is greater in value. Return the cards to the Star Line face down and go to Step 6, Move the Heavens step.

Questions 1 and 9 are always available to ask. You may only ask additional questions if your Player Token is on the corresponding question card. You may skip questions, but must ask questions in order. Stop asking questions once you get a positive response.

You must stop asking questions once you get a positive response.

  1. Alignment: Point to any/all aligned. If at least one card is aligned, flip the aligned cards face up and remove two Player tokens of your choice from the Question cards. If you only have one Player token, then remove that token.
  2. Symmetry: Is the sum of the cards exactly 10? (p.6) Note: Cards that add to 10 have the same background to make this easier to identify.
  3. Neighbors: Are these cards neighbors? (p.6)
  4. Oddity: Is the sum of the cards odd? If both cards are odd OR both cards are even, the sum is even. An odd sum means one card is odd and one is even.
  5. Massive: Is the sum of the cards greater than 10?
  6. Nearby: Is either card within one space of where it should be?
  7. Focus: Choose one card: Is it in the correct half of the board? Lift one of the cards higher than the other to indicate the one you want to ask about. 5 is always considered to be in the correct half of the board and a card in the 5 location is always considered to be in the correct half of the board.
  8. Orbit: If swapped, would either be aligned?
  9. Greatness: Which is greatest? (p.6)

Game End

The first player to correctly align their stars face-up wins! If a player takes the action to align their stars and they reveal a card in the incorrect location, their opponent wins.

Game Difficulties

If players want to play with different versions of the game, they can. One player can play Star Light, while the other plays Star Bright.

In addition to different versions, game play difficulty can be increased by adding in the Blackhole card(s). For a Hard game, add in one Blackhole card. For a Very Hard game, add in two Blackhole cards. Players do not need to use the same number of Blackhole cards.

For even more of a challenge, check out the Mode cards for other ways to play.

Blackholes

When adding in Blackhole card(s), shuffle them in with all of the Star cards. There will be extra cards. The extras will not be aligned with any Alignment cards; instead they will be to the left of the 1 or to the right of the 9 lane.

When asked questions about Blackhole cards, they count as nothing and are never aligned. Players should always respond "No." to questions about Blackhole cards. If two Blackholes are selected, when asked which card is greater, choose the larger Blackhole.

Blackholes can be added to Star Light or Star Bright and can be used by one or both players.
