- 6 results cards (with examples A to F on the reverse sides)
- 30 dice cards with a white background
- 30 challenge cards with a grey background
- 1 set of game instructions
Before You Begin
- Each player receives one results card; any excess cards are set aside and removed from the game.
- All 30 dice cards are shuffled and placed face down in the middle of the table as a draw pile. Each player draws one card from the draw pile and lays it down in front of him on the table, face up, to form his personal display. Then, the top three dice cards are laid down next to the draw pile to form the common display.
- Now, players decide on the difficulty level of the challenges for the game. The appropriate cards are selected from the 30 challenge cards, which are then shuffled (cards that have not been selected for this game are set aside and removed from the game):
- Beginner: 20 cards displaying colour dice only
- Intermediate: an additional 5 cards with white dice with dots
- Advanced: all 30 cards
- The shuffled challenge cards are put into a draw pile, face down, which also comes in the middle of the table.
Order of Play
- A player (it doesn't matter which one) turns over the first card from the draw pile of challenge cards so that the other players see it first. He places it next to the draw pile of challenges, face up, so that everyone can see it.
- Now, all players try to master the challenge at the same time. Each player must count the dots of the appropriate dice in the common display along with the dots of the appropriate dice in the player's own display. In all likelihood, each player will end up with a different result.
Description of the Challenge Cards
Beginner
- 1 colour die: sum of the dots on the dice of this one colour (see example A, B)
- 2 colour dice: sum of the dots on the dice of both of these colours (see example A, B)
- 3 colour dice: sum of the dots on the dice of these three colours (see example A, B)
- Big + small colour dice: The die with the highest number among the dice with the same colour as the big die is added to the die with the lowest number among the dice with the same colour as the small die. If more than one die shares the same number of dots, only one of them is taken into account (see example A, C).
Note: If there are no dice of a particular colour in either the player's display, or in the common display, this colour has the value "0" for this player.
Intermediate
- 2 white dice with dots: Sum of the dots of the colour dice on the dice cards (common display and the player's display) showing the same number of dots. (see example A, D)
- 3 white dice with dots: Sum of the dots of the colour dice on the dice cards (common display and the player's display) showing the same number of dots. (see example A, D)
Advanced
- 5 colour dice with a white numbered die: Only a single number is wanted for the position 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 according to the colour sequence. Example: see example cards A, E: The number depicted on the numbered die indicates that the die that is sought after is at position 5 of the colour sequence. Blue is the first colour of the colour sequence. There is only 1 blue die. It is at position 1. The next colour in the colour sequence is red. There are no red dice in either of the displays, so red is skipped. The next colour is green. There are multiple green dice, which are sorted in descending order from the highest to the lowest number: Position 2 = 6, position 3 = 6 and position 4 = 5. The next colour is yellow. There are multiple yellow dice, which are sorted in descending order from the highest to the lowest number: Position 5 = 6 (required number), position 6 = 3. The next colour would have been purple. However, since this is no longer relevant for this example, position 7 = 3 and position 8 = 1 are not needed.
Playing the Round
-
As soon as a player has calculated his result, he calls out his calculated number. Then, he puts his fingers on his result on the results card. This can be done either with 2 fingers of one hand or with one finger of each hand. The digits on the left of the results card are for the tens placeholder, while the digits on the right side are for the ones placeholder (see example F). This will ensure that nobody forgets his result while the results are being checked.
-
A player may only arrive at and show exactly one result per challenge.
-
Once all players have calculated out their respective result and are pointing to them on the results cards, the results are checked. The player who was the first to call out his calculated number has his result checked first.
-
If his result is accurate, there is no need to check the results of the other players. The player receives a card from the common display, which counts for 1 point. He must choose one of the cards that he used to solve the challenge. If he didn't use any of the cards in the common display to complete the challenge, he can take any card of his choice. The card is now placed, face up, in the player's display and must be taken into account for the following challenges.
Note: Now, the players who can calculate faster have additional cards in their personal display for a greater challenge, while other players have a better chance to be the first to calculate their results with less numbers to work with.
-
If the result of the first player to call out his number is not correct, the result of the next fastest player to call out his number is checked, etc. The first player to have called out the right number according to his personal display and the common display selects a card from the common display, which counts as 1 point (see above). All other players (including players with an incorrect result) do not receive any points for this round.
-
The card taken from the common display by the winner of the last round is replaced from the draw pile.
-
Play continues when any player turns over the next challenge card, placing it face up on top of the previously played challenge card. Everyone begins searching for and calculating out his respective result again at the same time.
End of Game
The game is over as soon as there are either no dice cards left to be placed in the common display, or a player has 10 dice cards in his personal display.
- The player with the most dice cards in his personal display wins the game. In the event of a tie, the player with the highest dot total wins.
Kidz Dice
Kidz Dice is for players aged 6 years and up and for players with unequal playing conditions.
The rules of the game are the same as for the basic game. However, players of different skill levels must collect either more or less dice cards in their personal display to win the game (e.g. adults need 10 cards, while kids only need 5).
Editor's note: the printed rules read "players oft different skill levels"; "oft" is corrected to "of" here.
