Hint

  • Make your handwriting as legible as possible – printing is best. This will help the Liebrarian avoid giving away the fact that yours is not the real first line.

Set Up

  1. Each player is given an answer sheet, a pencil and a Liebrary Book Pawn.
  2. Place the Card Catalog of Book Cards, Liebrary Cards (face down) and the timer in the center of play on the game board.
  3. Players place their Liebrary Book Pawn on the "Chapter One" space.

Playing the Game

  1. The first player to roll "WILD" on the Category Die becomes the first Liebrarian. The Liebrarian rolls the Category Die and chooses a Book Card from that category of the Card Catalog. If "WILD" is rolled, the Liebrarian can choose any category. He/She reads aloud the title of the book, author and plot summary.
  2. The Liebrarian may repeat the information for players up to three times if requested. Then, he or she starts the round by turning over the timer and telling players to begin.
  3. Each player, except the Liebrarian, has 90 seconds to write a believable first line to the book. Write the real first line if you know it. Be as outrageous or creative as possible!
  4. While the other players are composing their first lines to the book, the Librarian writes the real first line down and quickly turns the sheet over and returns the Book Card to the back of the Card Catalog.
  5. When finished, each player must print their name on their answer sheet.
  6. When time is up, each player must hand their answers to the Liebrarian face down. The Librarian then reviews each answer to make sure it can be read. If the Librarian cannot read the answer, he or she should either return it face down to the player who wrote it and ask them to rewrite it legibly, or quietly ask that player about any illegible words.
  7. The Libraian shuffles all the answers, including the real first line of the book, and reads each answer, out loud, in random order. The Librarian will likely have to pause after many of the answers so that he or she can be heard over the laughter.
  8. When the answers are read out loud, players should be very careful not to give away which answer is theirs. Use your poker face!
  9. After reading the answers out loud, the Librarian then summarizes all of the answers in a couple of words one final time.
  10. Beginning with the player to the left of the Liebrarian and continuing in a clockwise fashion, each player chooses the answer that he or she believes to be correct. The Liebrarian writes each player's initials on the answer chosen. Players may vote for their own answer in order to confuse other players; however no points are awarded for voting for one's own answer.
  11. Once every player has voted on the answer they believe is correct, the Liebrarian reveals the real first line to the book. The scores are tallied and players move around the board according to the scoring chart. The player to the Liebrarian's left becomes the new Liebrarian and play continues as described above.

Liebrarian Hints

  • Avoid revealing whether an answer is correct or incorrect.
  • Remember this is a bluffing game; a little 'difficulty' reading the correct answer can help disguise it.

Scoring Chart

For every point given, all players move their Liebrary Book Pawn forward the correct amount of spaces on the board.

  • 1 point is given to each player for every vote their first line received.
  • 2 points are given to each player for guessing the correct first line.
  • 3 points are given to the Liebrarian if no one votes for the correct first line.

Chart labels printed on the sheet: 3 or more players; ages 12 and up; social interaction.

Liebrary Cards

As you move around the game board, you may land on a space that instructs you to take a Liebrary Card. Take the top card from the deck and move according to the directions. Some cards give you a chance to advance on the board, while others move you backwards! Discard all played cards from the game. If the draw pile is empty and no one has won, reshuffle the Liebrary Cards and place them back on the draw space.

Winning the Game

The game ends when one player has gone completely around the game board to the "THE END" space. They are the winner! In case of a tie, both players share in the glory of the win.
