The Aim of the Game
The aim of the game is to win LIE CARDS by successfully telling lies which go unchallenged by the other players. To win the game you must have at least one LIE CARD.
The Board
The board is an anti-clockwise spiral with five different levels. The levels are as follows:
- Level 1 – Honest Citizen
- Level 2 – White Liar
- Level 3 – Opportunistic Liar
- Level 4 – Compulsive Liar
- Level 5 – Liar Liar
The Squares
Start Level Squares
Green topped squares. The start level squares mark the starting point of each level. It is to this square that you must go if ordered to go back to the start of the level you are on. If you land on a start level square during your go, you simply continue by rolling again.
Question Squares, Multiple Choice Squares, Truth or Lie Squares
Pink (Question), Yellow (Multiple Choice) and Blue (Truth or Lie) squares. These squares relate to the question cards in the box. The symbol on these squares indicates to whom you read the question/statement. The letter 'L' indicates the person directly to your left; the letter 'R' indicates the person directly to your right and the '?' indicates that you are free to choose. It is from this person that any challenge must come.
Risk It Squares
Purple topped corner squares. On a Risk It Square, you have the opportunity to go up a level, simply by rolling a six.
Lose A Lie Card Square
Purple topped corner squares. If you land on a Lose A Lie Card Square, quite simply you lose a Lie Card. If you do not have a Lie Card, you ignore it. In both cases you continue your go.
Gameplay
Decide amongst yourselves who starts by taking a vote on which of you is likely to be the worst liar. Once that has been decided play continues in an anti-clockwise direction.
If it is you to start, select your playing piece and place it on the start square of Level 1 – Honest Citizen. Roll the dice and advance the designated number of moves in an anti-clockwise direction. Then play a Question Card, a Multiple Choice Card, a Truth or Lie Card or a Risk It in accordance with the rules below.
Question Card
Read out the question corresponding to your dice roll, to the player selected on the square. Then you give them either the correct answer on the back of the card or a lie that you make up.
Truth or Lie Card
Read out one of the two statements to the player selected on the square – either the TRUTH or the LIE.
Risk It
Roll the dice, hiding the result from the other players with the shaker. Either you declare a six or you end your go and consolidate your position, by passing the dice on to the next player. If you have rolled a six, whether or not you are challenged, you automatically go up a level.
On all three squares it is up to the player being given the question/truth or lie/risk it to decide whether to accept or challenge.
Outcomes
- If you tell the TRUTH and are not challenged, you continue your go.
- If you tell the TRUTH but are challenged, you continue your go, but the challenger goes back to the start of his level.
- If you LIE and are not challenged, you continue your go and you win a LIE CARD.
- If you LIE and are challenged, you go back to the start of your level, ending your go.
- If you always tell the truth, you will never go back. However, you will never win the game, as you have to have a LIE CARD to win.
- If you never challenge, the other players will be able to lie with impunity.
- If you incorrectly challenge when you are on the start square of a level you go to the start square of the next level down, unless you are at the very start in which case you are given a MISS A GO CARD, that is handed in on your next go. You cannot have more than 1 Miss A Go card at any one time.
Multiple Choice Card
Read out the question corresponding to your dice roll, to the player selected on the square. You then give three answers – the correct one (in capitals), a wrong answer (also on the card) and your own made up answer. Your opponent must select the correct answer to end your go. If they choose your lie, you win a LIE CARD and continue your go. If they choose the wrong answer, there are no consequences; you simply continue your go.
- On a multiple choice card, whatever the outcomes, neither player can get sent back to the start of their level.
Winning the Game
You can only win the game if you have at least one LIE CARD. If you arrive at the square before going up to the level of LIAR LIAR without a LIE CARD you must continue straight on, onto the start square of the COMPULSIVE LIAR level and redo that level where you will have the opportunity to win a LIE CARD.
On arriving on the top level LIAR LIAR square, you hand in one LIE CARD. This gives you one attempt to win the game. And to win you simply take a Multiple Choice card and read out the question corresponding to your dice roll. You then offer the correct answer and your lie. Note, you do not read out the wrong answer. The other players decide which answer to accept and if they accept your lie, you win the game.
If the other players answer correctly, then it is the end of your go. If you still have a LIE CARD, you may remain on the final square until it is your go again, upon which you go through the same process, handing in one LIE CARD and rolling the dice to choose the question. If you do not have any remaining LIE CARDS, on your next go you start from the start square of the COMPULSIVE LIAR level where you will have the opportunity to win a LIE CARD.
Notes of Importance
- When landing on a square that allows a player to nominate an opponent, the player may not nominate the same opponent twice in the same go until the other opponents have all been nominated once. The same applies for nominating an opponent a third time – the other opponents must have been nominated at least twice.
- There are tactical elements to the game. For example, when nominating an opponent, a player should look to see who has the most to lose for an incorrect challenge. i.e. if player A has nearly completed a circuit and player B has only moved 2 squares from the start square, then player A would have to be sure before making a challenge whereas player B does not have much to lose and would therefore be more likely to challenge.
- Exceptional rule on Compulsive Liar level RISK IT squares. If you land on a RISK IT square on this level without a LIE CARD, you cannot automatically go up a level, as having a LIE CARD is a pre-requisite to get onto the final Liar Liar square. Under these circumstances the declaration and outcomes are the same except rather than going up a level, you advance 6 spaces. On the second of the two RISK IT squares, this will mean by-passing the entrance to the Liar Liar level and continuing on the Compulsive Liar level.
