Yes, it is optional. Play the card, and then any time in your turn you can kill it for the Sacrifice effect. You still keep the Recruit, Attack and once-this-turn abilities it produced, and it still counts for class and crew triggers. A copy can use the Sacrifice bonus even though it cannot itself be killed.
