Principle of the Game and Introduction

Players play the game in teams, forming couples in which one person plays the part of a Lady and the other plays a Gentleman, her husband.

The winning team is the one in which the Lady is the most elegant at the end of the game. In order for this to happen, each Gentleman makes money in the Stock Exchange by making sales and fulfilling contracts while each Lady gathers the most beautiful wardrobe by obtaining the most fashionable items from the different boutiques in the game.

Ladies&Gentlemen is above all a game of ambience. The more players try to emulate their in-game characters, the better the gaming experience. So, according to the role, you may become a flirty Lady with a passion for fashion or a rich, arrogant, pretentious Gentleman – and together make an explosive couple!

If there is an odd number of players, read the Courtesan rule in the 'variants' section of this book.

Shopping Arcade panels (x5) and their stands (x5)

The Shopping Arcade is made up of different panels that are held by plastic supports. They indicate where different cards will be placed. The front side of the Shopping Arcade is referred to as 'Boutiques' and is for the Ladies. The other side is called the 'Stock Exchange' and is for the Gentlemen.

Ladies' Material

Markers:

  • Colour markers (x5): there is a different colour marker for each team: blue, orange, green, red and pink.
  • Visit markers (x25): these are used to indicate which boutiques the Ladies purchase from. There are 5 markers per boutique: L&K, Queen Shop, Emporium, Spencer and Victorian.

Ladies' Cards

Wardrobe cards (x75)

"I'll take that dress in red velvet, that little necklace set with rubies, that large feathered hat, oh, and those silk gloves. That will do, I think I have been rather restrained today."

These allow Ladies to gather a wardrobe in order to be the most elegant Lady at the Ball. They are obtained in the different boutiques. Shown on each card is the article, the price, the number of stars (Elegance points) they are worth, the item "family" and, for some, the name of the designer (Jean-Paul Gantiez, Lolo LaBanne and Mélanie Canel). A Wardrobe card with no designer is a neutral card. A card may belong to two different designers.

There are 3 families of Wardrobe cards:

  • Clothes (blue background), which include dresses, coats, hats and gloves.
  • Accessories (green background), which include bags, mirrors, umbrellas, fans and boots.
  • Jewels (orange background), which include tiaras, necklaces, brooches, and earrings.

Servant cards (x20)

"Eleanor, go and get my Germain leather handbag; Permelia, don't forget to wash my velvet cape carefully; Abigail, can you go and get the new brooch I ordered… Phew! It is so tiring to do everything oneself!"

Each Servant card contains different objectives that Ladies may achieve in the boutiques. These cards must remain secret. Each Servant card may add extra Elegance points at the end of a game if the indicated objective has been fulfilled. Each card shows the price and the servant's name. Each Servant card costs £200.

Artisan cards (x20)

"At Germain I find that they always have the latest fashion: I'm just crazy about them! What's that?! The Countess is dressed in Garon? I must say that I have always found the dresses at Germain a bit dated, don't you think?"

These cards allow the Ladies to decide what is available for purchase at their favourite boutique: whether Wardrobe or Servant cards. Each card shows the card's family (clothes, accessories, jewels or servants) and the number of cards of that family that are for sale in a boutique.

Example: this Artisan card is from the Jewel family. The favourite boutique can therefore have 5 Wardrobe cards from the Jewel family for sale.

Gentlemen's Material

Tokens and banknotes:

Resource tokens (x55): these enable Gentlemen to fulfill different Contract cards or can be sold singly through the intermediary of the Current Market card. There are 6 types of resource token: coal, cotton, precious stones, wheat and tea, and a resource joker: the gold ingot.

Number tokens (x5): these are used to determine the turn order of the teams.

Banknotes (x48): this is the game's money. There are 3 values: 100£ (x28), 500£ (x8) and 1000£ (x12).

Gentlemen's Cards

Contract cards (x15)

"A fool and his money are soon parted!"

These allow Gentlemen to receive money and bonuses when they are fulfilled. Shown on each card is the type and number of Resource tokens needed to fulfill the contract, the amount of money received when the contract is fulfilled, as well as the premium or the bonus available for the first Gentleman to fulfill the contract.

Current Market cards (x5)

"The rates do not stop changing. A great man is one who knows how to predict them! Guess what sort of man I am!"

These indicate the value of each type of Resource token when they are sold singly. There is always a resource worth £300, one worth £200 and four worth £100.

Setup

Make teams of two players. One person is a Lady and the other a Gentleman. Use as many Shopping Arcade panels as there are teams.

Example: if there are 3 teams, use panels 1, 2 and 3.

Fix the panels to their plastic supports and stand them up next to each other. A main street border is formed.

The Ladies all sit on the 'Boutique' side of the Shopping Arcade panels. The Gentlemen sit on the opposite side of their Lady, on the 'Stock Exchange' side.

Each Shopping Arcade panel has a dominant colour: blue, orange, green, red or pink.

Ladies' Side Setup

Place the Colour markers facing their corresponding boutiques.

Take the Wardrobe cards as well as the Servant cards and make four piles: one for clothes (blue-backed cards), one for accessories (green-backed cards), one for jewels (orange-backed cards) and one for Servant cards. Put them on the 'Boutique' side.

Each Lady takes a Colour marker. This marker represents the colour of her team as well as her favourite boutique. Each Lady takes the Visit markers for her colour. Those belonging to the boutiques that are not in the Shopping Arcade are left in the box.

Example: panels from the 'Queen Shop', pink, 'Victorian', green, and 'Emporium', blue, are set up. Melanie chooses the green Colour marker. Her favourite boutique becomes the 'Victorian'. She then receives a Visit marker corresponding to the boutiques in the game: 'Queen Shop', 'Emporium' and 'Victorian'.

Each Lady takes a Servant card. She may look at it and keep it secret from the other players, including her Gentleman.

Take as many Artisan cards from each family as there are Ladies in the game. Shuffle them. Deal out four randomly to each Lady. Any remaining Artisan cards are put back in the box.

Example: if there are 3 teams, you take 3 Artisan cards at random from the 'Clothes' family, 3 from the 'Accessories' family, 3 from the 'Jewels' family and 3 from the 'Servant' family.

Gentlemen's Side Setup

On the 'Stock Exchange' side, set up a pile of Contract cards. Then place one Contract card face-up opposite each panel of the Shopping Arcade.

Take one Current Market card and place it face-up, in view of everyone. The other Current Market cards are placed back in the box.

Place all the banknotes on the 'Stock Exchange' side. This is the bank.

Each Gentleman receives £500 and a Resource token chosen at random from the three resources with a value of £100 on the Current Market card that has just been placed (apart from the Gold Ingot).

On the 'Stock Exchange' side, place face-down and mixed up, 5 Resource tokens per Gentleman. Place among those Resource tokens, also face-down, as many Number tokens as there are Gentlemen. This is the Stock. These tokens must be accessible to all Gentlemen. The rest of the Resource tokens are placed in the box.

Example: if there are 3 Gentlemen, place 15 Resource tokens, then the Number tokens 1, 2 and 3 face-down among the Resource tokens.

Note: during the game, players may communicate freely, but they are not allowed to give precise indications of their secret possessions (money, Servant cards, etc.) However, alluding or giving general clues is permitted: "Be reasonable my love, money's a little tight at the moment," "Honey, would it be all right if I spent some time at the shops today?"

Playing the Game

A game features 6 turns, each one representing a day in the life of the characters involved. At the end of the last turn the Ball takes place, during which the most elegant Lady is selected.

Order of a Day

Each day is divided into 3 phases: in the morning Gentlemen go to the Stock Exchange while the Ladies indulge in some window-shopping; in the afternoon it is time to do business; and finally in the evening the bills get paid. The Ladies and Gentlemen play simultaneously and in parallel, but they perform different actions.

Morning

Morning: Ladies at the Boutiques

In order to make their purchases and build-up their wardrobes, Ladies have a few rules to follow, or face the consequences:

  • To go to the Ball, they must have a dress
  • They may not have multiple copies of the same article (2 dresses, 3 hats, etc.)
  • Their articles may only come from a maximum of 2 of the 3 designers possible (JpG, LL or MC).

Each Lady decides what her favourite boutique will have for sale: she selects one of her Artisan cards and places it face-down in front of her favourite boutique. Once all the Ladies have chosen and placed their Artisan cards, they all turn them over.

Example: Melanie chooses to place the Artisan card Jewel '4' in front of her favourite boutique, 'Victorian'.

Then each lady takes as many Wardrobe or Servant cards as shown on the Artisan card that she just played.

Then, from those cards, she takes one that she places in the 'window', (face-up), in front of her favourite boutique. The other cards are placed face-down under the card in the 'window' in front of the boutique.

Example: Melanie takes 4 Wardrobe: Jewel cards and chooses a 4-star tiara, which she places face-up in front of her favourite shop. The other cards are placed face-down under the face-up card.

Then each lady chooses the Visit marker that corresponds to the shop where she hopes to make her purchases, and hides it in front of her.

Note: The Artisan cards rest in front of the boutiques.

Once all the Ladies have chosen, they all reveal their Visit markers and they move on to phase 2: Afternoon.

Morning: Gentlemen at the Stock Exchange

At the starting signal (given by one Gentleman), all Gentlemen play simultaneously. Their goal is to get a maximum 3 Resource tokens from the face-down stock.

They also need to get a Number token, ideally the one of the lowest value. This will determine the turn order of the following phases for all Gentlemen and Ladies.

In order to obtain their 3 Resource tokens and their Number token, each Gentleman turns over and looks at the tokens with one hand. He may either keep the token, placing it face-up in front of him, or put it back, face-down. He may not put back into the game a token that he has decided to keep.

He may not obtain more than 3 Resource tokens in this phase. If a Gentleman gets more than 3 Resource tokens in this phase he must discard at random any tokens above 3.

Once a Gentleman finds and decides to keep a Number token, he must stop looking and let the other Gentlemen complete the phase.

Example: Ben picks 3 Resource tokens: wheat, tea and the gold ingot. He looks for a Number token that will not mean his team goes last in each upcoming phase. He grabs the Number token '1'. His team will perform their actions first in the coming phases.

Note: A Number token can be taken even if the Gentleman does not have 3 Resources tokens. In this case, however, he may not continue to pick Resource tokens for the rest of the phase.

Once all the Gentlemen have a Number token move to phase 2: the Afternoon.

Afternoon

Afternoon: Buying with the Ladies

Each Lady retrieves the Wardrobe or Servant cards from in front of the boutique that they chose with their Visit marker.

Each Lady's objective is to choose a card that gains them Elegance points and fits in their wardrobe:

If multiple Ladies have chosen the same shop, it is always the Lady who is first in the turn order (see the Number tokens picked by the Gentlemen in the Morning) who takes the cards and chooses before the others. From those cards, the Lady chooses one that she places face-down in front of her. That is her purchase. Following turn order, she passes the remaining cards to the next Lady who is visiting the same boutique as her. Once all the ladies involved have chosen one card, the remaining cards are passed to the first Lady who may choose another if she wishes. Cards that are not chosen are replaced under the corresponding pile.

If the Lady is the only one to choose that boutique, she may keep as many cards as she wishes and replace the non-chosen cards in the appropriate pile.

If a favourite boutique is not visited by any Lady (The Lady's own boutique included), a Discount is given to the team of the Lady who owns that boutique. See 'Discount' in the following phase.

ATTENTION: unlike with Wardrobe cards, each Lady may only choose one Servant card during this phase, no matter how many Ladies chose this boutique.

ATTENTION: Wardrobe cards that feature two designers mean that two designers have been selected instead of one. The Lady may not choose one or other of those designers.

Example: Melanie and another Lady choose to visit the Emporium. Melanie's Gentleman has the Number token '1' so she is the first to choose a card from this boutique. Once she has chosen a card and placed it face-down in front of her she passes the remaining cards to the other Lady. When Melanie gets the cards back again from that Lady, she decides she will not make any further purchases. She passes the cards again to the other Lady who may choose more cards.

When all the Ladies have selected their future purchases move to phase 3: Evening.

Afternoon: Buying with the Gentlemen

The goal for each Gentleman is to make money by sales based on the Current Market or by honouring visible contracts.

In turn order (as indicated by the Number tokens that were picked in the Morning), each Gentleman may:

  • Sell their Resource tokens at the price indicated on the Current Market card. He discards the Resource tokens that he wishes to sell and takes the corresponding amount of money from the bank. The discarded Resource tokens are replaced in the game box.
  • Fulfill one or more of the visible Contract cards. He discards (back into the box) the Resource tokens stipulated on the contract and takes the corresponding amount of money from the bank.

If that Gentleman is the first to fulfill that contract, he may also choose to receive:

  • The financial premium shown on the contract. In this case he takes the sum from the bank.
  • The bonus (if the contract has one). In this case, he places the contract face-up in front of him at the end of the phase. Once he uses the bonus he discards the contract.

Note: when fulfilling a contract, the Gold Ingot Resource token may be used instead of any resource.

Notes:

  • More than one Gentleman may fulfill the same contract during a turn. Only the first to honour the contract receives the bonus or premium.
  • You can fulfill more than one Contract in the same turn, and sell multiple resources at the same time as long as you have enough Resource tokens.
  • The same Gentleman may not fulfill the same contract card more than once.
  • A Gentleman may do nothing during this phase.
  • Resource tokens not used may be kept for future turns.

Remember: the exact amount of money a Gentleman possesses is something that must be kept secret between him and his Lady. To prevent others knowing, banknotes should be turned face down.

Example: Ben is the first in the turn order. He is the first to fulfill this contract by discarding 1 wheat and 1 gold ingot (which replaces cotton): he receives £400. Since he is the first to fulfill the contract he chooses to receive the premium of £200. Ben also makes a sale – he sells 1 coal to gain £300. Finally, Ben decides to keep 1 tea Resource token for the next turn. Benoit receives a total of £900 in phase 2.

Once all the Gentlemen have made sales and fulfilled contracts move to phase 3: Evening.

Evening

Evening for Ladies and Gentlemen: The Bill

Each Lady passes her purchase(s) to her Gentleman, who will choose whether to pay for them or not. For each Wardrobe or Servant card he is given, a Gentleman can choose to:

  • Replace the card under its original deck because he believes it to be too expensive, because his Lady is not worthy of wearing such an article or simply because he does not have the means to pay for it.
  • Pay the price of the card. The Lady places the card face-up in front of herself.
  • Pay £100 and give the card back to his Lady, face-down, because he is not able to pay for the card straight away. On the next turn that card will be passed back to him for payment once again. The Gentleman may again choose to replace the card, pay for it outright or pay £100 once again.

Discount: if a team's favourite boutique did not get any visitors (including its' Lady), the Gentleman may buy for his Lady the Wardrobe or Servant card that is visible in the window at half price (rounded up).

Remember: Ladies and Gentlemen do not have the right to communicate to each other about their secret possessions like money, or objectives on Servant cards. Only alluding to these things is allowed.

Example: Ben receives Melanie's bills – that is, the Wardrobe cards that she acquired in the previous phase (Afternoon). For the first card, Ben decides to pay the whole sum and gives the card back face-up to his Lady. For the second card, which would perfectly complement his Lady's wardrobe, Ben pays £100 because he does not currently have enough to pay for it all. He gives it back to Melanie face-down. He decides not to pay for the third and final card because he thinks it is too expensive. He places it back in its pile.

End of the Turn

Once the Gentlemen have finished paying (or not) for their Ladies' purchases, a new day begins.

Nevertheless, before this begins, make sure:

For the Ladies:

  • Each Lady has taken back their Visit markers
  • Artisan cards in front of the boutiques are not discarded. The next ones are placed on top.
  • Each Lady passes on the Artisan cards from her hand to her neighbour on the right. At the end of the third game turn, the Ladies will only have 1 Artisan card left in their hand. They then pick up the three cards that have been placed in front of their favourite boutique so that they have 4 Artisan cards again.

For the Gentlemen:

  • That there are always 5 Resource tokens per Gentleman in the stock. The Gentlemen must replace their Number tokens face-down amongst the Resource tokens. All the tokens (Number and Resource) are mixed up. If there are no more Resource tokens to put into the Stock, mix in those that were put to one side.
  • All honoured contracts that are still in the Stock exchange side are removed and replaced. If there are no more new contracts, use those that have been removed, mixing them with the originals.
  • Add £100 to each contract that has not been fulfilled. The first Gentleman to fulfill the contract receives this supplement as well as the premium or bonus.

Note: a contract that has not been honoured for several turns receives £100 supplement each time. There is no limit to this accumulation.

The Ball: Adding Up the Points

The Ball is held at the end of the sixth day, and represents the end of the game. The winner is the most elegant Lady, and her team is declared victorious.

First of all, ensure that each wardrobe conforms to each of the rules:

  • A Lady must have a Wardrobe card that represents a dress. If not, she loses her best Servant (the one that gives her the most Elegance points).
  • A Lady may not have multiple copies of the same item in her Wardrobe: two hats, three brooches, etc. She may only keep the item that gives her the most Elegance points.
  • A Lady may only have a maximum of two designers out of three in her Wardrobe. If not, she must discard all the Wardrobe cards that come from the one designer too many that she has.

After this has been checked, each Lady adds up the number of Elegance points from her Wardrobe cards.

After this, add the Elegance points that are on the Servant cards (as long as the objective has been achieved) and the bonuses from certain Contract cards.

Example: here is Melanie's wardrobe at the end of the game. First make sure that she has a dress (which she has), before adding up the points. Also check that she has not gone over the limit of only having clothes from two designers. Since Melanie has Wardrobe cards from three designers, she decides to take out the one from 'JpG', which is worth fewer Elegance points than the others.

Then check that Melanie does not have multiple copies of the same article. She has two brooches so she takes away the brooch that is worth the fewest Elegance points.

Now add up the Elegance points from the different Wardrobe cards that make up Melanie's wardrobe. They make a total of 12 Elegance points.

Next add the Elegance points from Servant cards. Melanie only has one: Bessie. Thanks to this card, Melanie gets a further 3 Elegance points because her outfit contains 4 Wardrobe cards from the designer 'LL'.

Finally add the Elegance points from any Contract cards that are in front of her Gentleman. Melanie gains another Elegance point.

Melanie ends up with a total of 16 Elegance points.

The team whose Lady is the most elegant at the Ball, that is, the Lady with the most Elegance points, wins the game. In the case of a tie, the richest of the tied teams wins. If there is still a tie, the Lady with the prettiest smile leads her team to victory.

Variants

Variant for an Odd Number of Players: The Courtesan

In case of an uneven number of players, the ravishing courtesan joins the game.

Principle of the game:

The Courtesan's aim is to become the most elegant with the help of all the Gentlemen. If she succeeds, she brings victory to the Gentleman who has courted her the most. Be careful not to neglect her, as she can cause quite a scandal and ruin the reputation of those who looked down on her…

Setup:

The player with no team takes on the role of the Courtesan (a Lady without a Gentleman).

With 5 players, place 3 contracts on the 'Stock Exchange' side; with 7 or 9 players, place 4 contracts on the 'Stock Exchange' side.

With 5 players, the Gentlemen each begin with £1,500 instead of £500; with 7 players, they each begin with £1,200 and with 9 players they each begin with £1,000.

The Courtesan receives color markers for each team and places them in front of herself.

The Courtesan sits with the Ladies on the 'Boutique' side, without a Gentleman opposite her if possible.

For the rest of the setup the Courtesan follows the same rules as the other Ladies.

Changes to Different Phases:

Ladies' side: Afternoon: If the Courtesan is in the same boutique as other Ladies, she is always served second, no matter how many Ladies are present or the Number tokens that are owned by their Gentlemen.

Evening phase: Before the Ladies present their purchases to their Gentlemen, the Courtesan distributes hers to the Gentlemen, as she wishes. The Gentlemen then receive the purchases from their Ladies. They pay for the purchases of their Lady and/or the Courtesan, according to the following rule: 'You must buy your Lady at least as many purchases as the Courtesan.'

Example: Benoit pays for a card for Alexandra, who is the courtesan. As he has done this, he must pay for a card for Melanie, his Lady.

For each purchase presented by the Courtesan, the Gentleman may choose to pay it or give it back to the Courtesan.

From all the purchases the courtesan hopes to make (that is, the different Wardrobe or Servant cards that she picked in phase 2), she must select up to three cards and discard all the others.

The purchases that Gentlemen make for her are placed face-up in front of the Courtesan, with a Colour marker on each from the team of the Gentleman who paid for it.

At the end of the game, all purchases that have not been paid for by a Gentleman are discarded.

The Ball:

If the Courtesan is the most elegant, she wins along with the Gentleman who bought her the most expensive gifts (the ones that are worth the most Elegance points). In case of a tie, she wins with the richest of those Gentlemen.

If the Courtesan is the least elegant (in last place), she makes a scandal and takes down with her the team of the Gentleman who gave her the fewest Elegance points, and in case of a tie, the poorest of those teams. As in the standard game the winner is the team with the Lady who is the most elegant at the Ball from the remaining team.

In case of a tie between the Courtesan and one or more Ladies, the Courtesan is always considered the most elegant.

Variant: Gossip

In order to spice up the game up a bit, you can include Gossip rules. Add the Gossip cards. This variant is best enjoyed when all players fully take on the roles of the characters that they are playing.

Material:

Gossip cards (x20)

Setup:

During preparation, deal 3 Gossip cards to each Lady. They must be kept secret. Remaining Gossip cards are replaced in the box.

Playing the Game

During the game, at any time in any phase, Ladies may hand a Gossip card to other Ladies as long as they adhere to the following conditions:

Each Lady may only hand out 1 Gossip card per turn. As you 'offer' a Gossip card to another Lady, it is the done thing to accompany this action with a gratuitous remark: "Darling, did you lend your dress to your Servant?" etc. Players should make these up as they go along.

During the Evening phase, if her favourite Boutique has not been visited by anybody, a Lady may discard a Gossip card from her hand (not one that an opposing Lady has given her) instead of purchasing the Wardrobe or Servant card in the window at half price.

At the end of the game, each Lady loses 1 Elegance point per Gossip card that she has been given or kept in her hand (gossip comes back to you!)

Note: to understand the significance of the different Gossip cards, read the Game Help section.

Note: you can still play with Gossip cards even if there is an uneven number of players. The Courtesan also receives 3 Gossip cards during the setup. The rules do not change, and the Courtesan continues to play like the Ladies.
