- 24 treasure cards
- 24 Daedalus cards
- 1 Book of Daedalus card holder
- 4 playing pieces
- 4 player boards
- 12 spell tiles: 4x Push, 4x Rotate, 4x Standard spells (1x Switch, 1x Traverse, 1x Escape, 1x Teleport)
Before playing for the first time: Remove all the pieces from the stamped board and build the Book of Daedalus by slotting the pieces together as shown.
Preparation
- Lay the game board between the players. Mix the 34 path tiles, and fill the board at random with the pathways face up. Place the remaining spare tile face up beside the board.
- Shuffle the 24 treasure cards and place them face down beside the board.
- Shuffle the 24 Daedalus cards and place them face down into the right-hand side of the Book of Daedalus card holder.
- Each player chooses a playing piece and takes the matching player board. Put your piece on the matching home corner space. Keep your player board in front of yourself.
- Give each player two spell tiles: a Push and a Rotate. Keep your two spell tiles face up in front of you beside your player board. The four Standard spell tiles are only for use in the Standard and Expert games. When playing the Introductory game, put them back in the box.
- Each player draws 2 treasure cards from the deck. Place your cards face up on the spaces on your player board.
- Choose a start player and give them the Book of Daedalus.
Goal of the game
Work together to collect all the treasures before you run out of time!
Start each turn by revealing the next page of the ancient book of Daedalus to find out what Daedalus does next. He wants to stop you from opening the portal and will try to slow you down by shifting and blocking paths, hiding treasures and teleporting you back and forth across the maze.
Can you collect all the treasures and open the secret portal before the Book of Daedalus runs out of pages? If not, you and your teammates will be trapped in the labyrinth forever!
These rules explain how to play the Introductory game. When you're ready to increase the challenge, read the extra rules at the end of the rulebook to play the Standard or Expert game.
The treasures
Mushroom, Elephant, Sickle, Fan, Candle, Key, Urn, Amulet, Magic Hat, Dragon Tooth, Cauldron, Dagger, Skull, Lantern, Magic Broom, Scroll, Winged Shoes, Runestone, Potion, Magic Wand, Doll, Mandrake, Magic Crystal, Shell.
How to play
The player with the Book of Daedalus goes first. Players then take turns clockwise and hand over the Book of Daedalus after each turn. Every turn has the following three steps:
- Read the Book of Daedalus. Turn the next page of the Book from right to left to find out what Daedalus does to mess with everyone's plans.
- Use your spells and move your playing piece. Use your spells and move through the maze to try and collect the treasures on your player board.
- End of turn. If you collected one or both of your treasures, take new ones from the deck. Flip your used spell tiles face up again. Then pass the Book of Daedalus clockwise to the next player.
1. Read the Book of Daedalus
At the start of every turn, Daedalus will try to mess with your plans. Flip the next Daedalus card and place it face-up on the left-hand side of the card holder, as if turning the page of a book. You must follow the instructions on the card. There are three kinds of card:
Push a tile
Flip the spare path tile face down, and push it into the maze at the position shown on the Daedalus card, until another path tile is pushed out of the maze on the other side. Place that tile beside the maze as the new spare tile.
Daedalus always pushes the tile, even if it pushes out an already face down tile. When this happens, flip the new spare tile face up.
If Daedalus pushes out a tile with a playing piece on it, Daedalus teleports the piece to that player's home corner.
Example: Slide the path tile face down into the row marked with an arrow between the yellow and the red starting position.
Flip tiles
Look for the two path tiles showing the treasures or markings shown on the Daedalus card. If one or both of them are currently face up in the maze, flip them face down. If Daedalus flips a tile with a playing piece on it, Daedalus teleports the piece to that player's home corner.
Teleport playing pieces
Teleport the two playing pieces shown on the Daedalus card to the indicated home corner. Ignore playing pieces that are not in play.
2. Use your spells and move your playing piece
Now it's your turn to use your spells to manipulate the maze and move along open paths to try and collect one or both of the treasures on your player board.
On your turn you can do the following things ONCE EACH and in ANY ORDER.
- Use your Push spell
- Use your Rotate spell
- Move your playing piece
Using your Push spell
Before or after you move your playing piece, you can use your Push spell once to push the spare path tile face up into the maze, until another tile is pushed out of the maze on the opposite side. There are 12 arrows around the edge of the board. They mark the rows where you can push path tiles into the maze.
After using the spell, flip your Push spell tile face down. You can't use this spell again until your next turn.
Important! You cannot use your Push spell to push a face-down path tile out of the maze!
If you push out a path tile with a playing piece on it, move the piece to the opposite side of the board onto the path tile that you just placed. Moving this piece does not count as your turn.
Using your Rotate spell
Before or after you move your playing piece, you can use your Rotate spell once to rotate one tile anywhere in the maze. Lift up a tile, turn it to any other orientation and then put it back in the same space. If the tile has a playing piece on it, the piece stays on the tile.
After using the spell, flip your Rotate spell tile face down. You can't use this spell again until your next turn.
Moving your playing piece
On your turn, you can move your piece once, as far as you like to any tile that you can reach directly along an open path. You can move past other playing pieces, and more than one playing piece can stop on the same tile. You can also choose not to move.
Important! Path tiles that have been flipped face down block the paths. You cannot move through them!
Collecting a treasure
To collect a treasure, you must move along an open path to the tile showing the treasure and stop on that path tile. You can't collect a treasure just by moving over it and stopping on a different tile.
If you stop on a tile matching one of the treasure cards on your player board you have collected the treasure! Do the following:
- Take the matching treasure card from your player board and put it face down next to the game board. Each card shows a small part of the portal. Complete the picture to open the portal and escape the maze!
then
- You have earned a bonus move that you can use this turn to move for a second time along open paths, following all the usual rules and try to collect a second treasure or position yourself better for your next turn.
If you haven't used one or both of your spells yet, you can use your unused spells either before or after you make your bonus move. (Maybe you can even help one of your teammates.)
No treasures to collect?
Later in the game, when the Treasure deck has run out and you have no treasures on your own board to collect, you can instead use your turn to try to collect a treasure on any other players' boards. You can only do this when you have no treasures of your own to collect.
Collecting a second treasure
If you earn a bonus move, can you use it to reach the other treasure on your player board? If so, you have found both your treasures in one turn!
Important! If you collect your second treasure, you do not earn another bonus move.
Example: Collecting a second treasure. The two treasures on your player board are the "Mushroom" and the "Elephant". (1) You use your Rotate spell to change the maze and make a path to the Mushroom. (2) You use your regular move to reach the Mushroom to collect it. You have collected a treasure, so you earn a bonus move. (3) Before you use your bonus move, you use your Push spell to change the maze again. (4) Finally, you use your bonus move to reach the Elephant and collect your second treasure. You don't earn another bonus move. You have used both of your spells, so your turn is over.
Flipping face-down tiles face up again
You cannot move through a flipped path tile. But you can move onto a flipped tile, along an open path that leads to its edge, and then stop.
If you do this, you can flip the tile face up again! Flip it face up, and put it in any orientation you choose, with your playing piece on top. The orientation of the tile doesn't have to connect to the path along which you moved when you moved onto the tile.
You will be able to move off the tile as normal the next time you move.
Daedalus will often flip tiles with treasures on them, so you may need to move onto a face-down tile and flip it face up to collect that treasure. If you find a treasure you were looking for on a face-down tile, put the treasure card face down beside the game board as normal.
Remember: You earn a bonus move the first time you collect a treasure each turn, but not if you collect a second treasure.
No peeking!
You cannot look at face-down tiles unless you stop on them and flip them face up, so you will need to try to remember where treasures are hidden.
3. End of turn
At the end of your turn, do the following:
- If you found any treasures, draw new treasure cards to replace them. When the treasure deck runs out, skip this step, but continue playing.
- If you used any of your spells, flip the tiles face up so that they are ready to be used in your next turn.
- Pass the Book of Daedalus card holder clockwise to the next player. They now start their turn by turning the next page of the Book.
Things to remember
- You don't have to use your spells on your turn, but you cannot use them on another player's turn. Maybe you can use them on your turn to help your teammates?
- You can use each of your two spells once each turn, using each one either before or after you move your playing piece.
- You can never use your Push spell to push a face-down tile out of the maze.
- You may use your Push spell to push any other row of tiles, including pushing a row that reverses the push made by the previous player.
- When you collect a treasure you earn a bonus move. If you use the bonus move to collect a second treasure, you don't get another bonus move. This means you can only collect a maximum of two treasures in a single turn.
- The team wins the game immediately when you collect all the treasures. You don't need to move back to your home corners.
End of the game
Everyone WINS together if you collect all 24 treasures before the Book of Daedalus runs out. Arrange the 24 treasure cards face down to complete the picture, open the secret portal and escape the labyrinth!
Everyone LOSES together if the Book of Daedalus runs out and you have not collected all the treasures by the end of the final turn.
Standard game
The Standard game is the same as the Introductory game, but introduces four new spells.
During setup, give each player a Push spell tile as normal, then take 1 Rotate spell tile and the 4 Standard spell tiles (Switch, Traverse, Teleport and Escape). Don't use the other 3 Rotate spell tiles. Give each player one of these 5 spell tiles. You can let players choose, or shuffle the tiles and give one to each player at random. Put any unused spell tiles back in the box.
You already know how to use the Rotate spell. The other spells are explained below:
Switch
Before or after you move, you may switch the positions of two adjacent path tiles, including face-down tiles. You cannot rotate or flip the tiles when you do this. If either tile has a playing piece on it, the piece moves with the tile.
Traverse
While moving, you may move through one flipped path tile, moving on and off of the tile along paths that run up to its edges, and leaving the tile face down. Do not flip the tile face up when you move through it.
Teleport
While moving, if you reach any home corner space (yours or another player's), you may teleport your playing piece once to any other corner space, and then continue your move.
Escape
While moving, you may leave and then re-enter the maze once using open passages that lead off the edge of the maze, and then continue your move. You cannot end your movement outside of the maze. You may even re-enter the maze by moving onto a face-down tile on the edge of the maze, but you must then stop moving and flip the tile face up as normal.
Expert game
The Expert game is the same as the Standard game, but you must find the two treasures on your board in order, going left to right. After you find your first treasure, slide the second treasure over into the first treasure space. When you draw treasure cards, take them one by one, and fill the two spaces on your board from left to right. If you have no treasures remaining on your board, you can only look for one of the left-most treasures on another player's board.
