Game Objective & Overview

OBJECTIVE: Players will compete to earn Prestige by attracting Visitors to their Château and earning end-game bonuses from Garden Features, Flower cards, and Coins. The player with the most Prestige at the end of the game wins!

OVERVIEW: The game takes place over a series of rounds. Each round, starting with the player who holds the First Player pawn, players take turns placing one of their Artisans at the various locations around the board. Once all players have placed all of their available Artisans, the round ends with a Garden Party, when the face-up Visitors on the board go to the player with the highest total Allure that matches each Visitor's Allure type. Rounds continue in this manner until 1 player reaches 12 Prestige, at which point the Grande Soirée is held, Prestige is tallied, and the winner of the game is declared!

Game Components

  • 1 game board
  • 4 château boards
  • 90 coins (cardboard)
  • 16 wooden pawns
  • 55 Garden Feature cards
  • 20 wooden Allure tokens
  • 10 Character cards
  • 30 Event cards
  • 4 wooden Prestige tokens
  • 35 Visitor cards
  • 88 Flower cards
  • 20 Artisan cards
  • 1 First Player pawn

Game Board Setup

BOARD: Place the game board in the middle of the table, making sure to leave enough space for each player's Château board and garden area.

GARDEN FEATURE CARDS: Shuffle the Garden Feature deck and place it face-down on the game board.

FLOWER CARDS: Shuffle the Flower deck and place it face-down on the game board.

VISITOR CARDS: Shuffle the Visitor deck and place it face-down on the game board.

ARTISAN CARDS: Shuffle the Artisan deck and place it face-down on the game board.

EVENT CARDS: Shuffle the Event deck and place it face-down on the game board.

REMAINING PAWNS AND COINS: Place the remaining pawns and Coins within reach of all players.

The game board has spaces for: discarded Flower cards, the face-down Flower deck, 4 spaces for face-up Flower cards, the face-down Visitor deck, discarded Garden Features, the face-down Garden Feature deck, 5 spaces for face-up Garden Feature cards, discarded Visitor cards, 6 spaces for face-up Visitor cards, the Prestige tracker, the face-down Artisan deck, discarded Artisan cards, the face-down Event deck, and face-up Event cards.

Player Setup

Each player takes the following components and places them in the play area in front of them:

1 CHÂTEAU BOARD: Placed in front of the player. The area next to each player's Château board is their Garden Feature area.

1 CHARACTER CARD & 2 ARTISAN CARDS: Your Character and Artisans work together to help build your Château. Deal 2 Character cards to each player. Then deal 3 Artisan cards to each player from the Artisan deck. Each player selects 1 of their Character cards and places it to the left of their Château board. Each player selects 2 of their Artisan cards and places them in the first and second Artisan spaces on their Château board. Once all players have chosen their Character and Artisans, return the remaining unused Character cards to the game box, and shuffle the remaining unused Artisan cards back into the Artisan deck.

4 PAWNS: Each player takes 4 pawns of their chosen color. Each player places 2 of their pawns in the first and second Artisan pawn spaces on their Château board. Keep the remaining 2 pawns to the side of the Château board.

1 PRESTIGE TOKEN: Each player takes 1 Prestige token in their color and places it on the game board below the Prestige tracker.

5 ALLURE TRACKER TOKENS: Each player takes 5 Allure tokens (1 of each color) and places them next to their Château board.

3 COINS: Each player takes 3 Coins from the supply and places them next to their Château board. Coins will be used throughout the game to purchase Flower cards, hire additional Artisans, etc.

3 FLOWER CARDS: Deal 3 random Flower cards to each player from the Flower deck. Each player places their cards in their hand. Do not show these cards to the other players.

FIRST PLAYER: The player who last frolicked through a field of flowers receives the First Player pawn for the first round.

Ways to Score Prestige

Prestige is the currency by which gardeners are judged worthy of the Grande Soirée, so collecting it is the key to your strategy. It may help to keep in mind the various ways that you can score Prestige during the game:

VISITORS: Some Visitors give Prestige when visiting your Château during the Garden Party step at the end of each round.

PRESTIGE LOCATION: Once per round, you can place 1 Artisan on the Prestige location on the game board to gain the Prestige shown.

GARDEN FEATURE ABILITIES: Some Garden Features have abilities that are triggered when acquired, when you are visited, at the end of each round, or at the end of the game. They may give you Prestige if certain conditions are met.

COINS: You can earn Prestige based on the number of Coins you have at the end of the game.

FLOWER CARDS: You can earn Prestige based on the number of Flower cards you have in your hand at the end of the game.

GAINING PRESTIGE: To gain Prestige, move your Prestige token on the Prestige tracker up a number of spaces equal to the amount of Prestige you have gained.

Allure Types

There are 6 Allure types used throughout the game: Architecture, Paths, Water, Flowers, Vistas, and Wild. These symbols represent different aspects of a garden and can be found on various cards, including:

GARDEN FEATURES: to show the types of Flower cards required to purchase the Garden Feature (see Garden Features) and the total Allure type values for your Château (see Purchasing a Garden Feature).

VISITOR CARDS: to show the Allure type that attracts each Visitor to your Château during the Garden Party step at the end of each round (see Garden Party).

ARTISAN CARDS: to show the Allure type that the Artisan can contribute toward the purchase of a Garden Feature once each round (see Purchasing a Garden Feature).

FLOWER CARDS: to show the Allure type that the Flower card can contribute toward the purchase of a Garden Feature (see Flower Market).

Playing a Round

During each round, players will do the following in order:

START OF ROUND: Players draw cards to fill the board spaces for face-up Flowers, Garden Features, Events, and Visitors.

PLACING ARTISANS: Starting with the player who holds the First Player pawn, players take turns placing Artisans at the various locations around the board and resolving their actions there, 1 Artisan each turn.

GARDEN PARTY: Once all players have placed all of their available Artisans, the round ends with a Garden Party. The face-up Visitors on the board each move to the Château of the player with the highest total Allure that matches the Visitor's Allure type.

END OF ROUND: Each player returns their Artisan pawns to their Château board and moves all Visitors who came to their Garden Party (except for their Companion, if they have one) to the Visitor discard space. The First Player pawn is passed clockwise to the next player, and play proceeds to the next round.

Start of Round

Perform the following actions at the start of each round:

  1. FLOWER CARDS: Draw and place 1 Flower card face-up in each empty Flower card space on the game board.

  2. GARDEN FEATURE CARDS: Draw and place 1 Garden Feature card face-up in each empty Garden Feature card space on the game board.

  3. VISITOR CARDS: As word of the players' beautiful gardens spreads, more and more Visitors will come to your Garden Parties. The Prestige tracker on the game board has 3 designated spaces (at 4, 8, and 12 Prestige) that show when more Visitors become available each round. Draw new Visitor cards using the following rules:

Begin by revealing a number of Visitors equal to the number of players and place them face-up in the empty Visitor card spaces. Reveal 2 Visitors for a 2-player game, 3 Visitors for a 3-player game, or 4 Visitors for a 4-player game.

Next, reveal 1 additional Visitor card for each of the specially designated spaces at 4, 8, and 12 Prestige that has been reached or passed by any player. (Only 1 additional Visitor card is drawn for each space regardless of the number of players who have reached or passed that space.)

Example: Ronan, Poppy, and Amy are playing a 3-player game. Ronan has the highest score at 8 Prestige. At the start of the round, the players will reveal 5 total Visitor cards and place them face-up in the empty Visitor cards spaces: 3 Visitor cards for a 3-player game, 1 additional Visitor card because any player has reached or passed 4 Prestige, and 1 additional Visitor card because any player has reached or passed 8 Prestige.

Some cards and game effects may allow additional Visitors to be drawn. If all the available Visitor spaces are filled, place any additional Visitors next to the Visitor spaces on the board.

  4. EVENTS: Starting in the second round through the end of the game, draw 1 Event card from the top of the Event deck and place it face-up on the Event discard pile. (An Event card is not drawn in the first round.) Some Event cards are resolved immediately, some remain in effect during the entire round, and some take effect at the end of the round. Follow the instructions on the Event card to resolve the effect.

EVENT CARD:

  • TITLE: The title of the Event.
  • EVENT EFFECT: The effect that each player may/must resolve either at the start of the round, during the round, or at the end of the round.

Artisans

Once the Start of Round step is complete, players will place their Artisans. Starting with the player who holds the First Player token, players take turns in clockwise order, placing 1 of their Artisans at the various locations around the board. If a player has no more Artisans to place when it is their turn, that player passes and play continues with the next player in clockwise order, until all players have placed all of their Artisans.

HOW TO USE ARTISANS: Each player begins the game with 2 Artisans. Each player may hire up to 2 additional Artisans from the Artisan Guild location during the game (see Artisan Guild).

PLACING AN ARTISAN: Each Artisan working for you is represented by a card on your Château board and its corresponding pawn. When you place the pawn on the game board, you are sending the Artisan on the matching card to perform an action on your behalf. Take the pawn for the Artisan you have chosen to employ and place it on the location you would like to visit on the game board.

Each Artisan may be employed only once per round (unless otherwise specified by an Event or other effect that occurs during the game).

ARTISAN ABILITIES: Any Artisan may be placed on any space on the board. However, each Artisan has a unique ability that corresponds to a specific location. If a player places their Artisan on the space that corresponds to their ability, that player may activate the Artisan's ability.

ARTISAN CARD:

  • ALLURE TYPE: The Artisan's Allure type, which can be used once per round to contribute toward the purchase of a Garden Feature card.
  • OCCUPATION: Your Artisan's specialty.
  • ABILITY LOCATION: The location on the board where this particular Artisan's ability can be activated.
  • ABILITY: The ability that is activated when this Artisan's pawn is placed on their ability location.

TIP: Be sure you are checking your Artisans' Allure types when purchasing a Garden Feature. Sometimes, you can purchase a Garden Feature card without using any of your Flower cards, simply by using your Artisans' Allure types. Remember, each Artisan can contribute their Allure type to a Garden Feature purchase only once per round.

Locations

There are 6 locations where players can place their Artisans:

  • FLOWER MARKET: Purchase Flower cards to use toward the purchase of Garden Features.
  • PRESTIGE: Gain +1 Prestige.
  • SPECIAL INVITATION: Send a Special Invitation to a Visitor to convince them to attend your Garden Party (in the case of a tie) or to become your Companion.
  • ARTISAN GUILD: Hire additional Artisans or replace your current Artisans.
  • GARDEN FEATURES: Use Flower cards and your Artisans to acquire Garden Features. Garden Features increase your Château's Allure and attract Visitors to your Garden Party at the end of each round.
  • COIN: Gain +2 Coins.

Flower Market

FLOWER CARD COSTS:

  1. Cards with 2 Allure cost 2 Coins.
  2. Wild cards cost 1 Coin.
  3. Cards with 1 Allure cost 0 Coins.
  4. Cards from the deck cost 1 Coin.

FLOWER MARKET: Place an Artisan pawn on the Flower Market location to purchase 1 Flower card. A player may choose to purchase any of the face-up Flower cards for the price listed on the card (i.e., Wild cards cost 1 Coin). Alternatively, a player may pay 1 Coin to purchase a face-down Flower card from the top of the Flower deck. If a Flower card has no cost listed, then the purchase price is 0 Coins. Coins used to purchase a Flower card are placed in the Coin supply.

Each Artisan placed at the Flower Market may purchase only 1 Flower card, unless otherwise stated by an Artisan ability, Event, etc. Purchased Flower cards are placed in the player's hand. (Remember, the face-up Flower cards are not refreshed until the start of the next round, unless an effect in the game causes them to be refreshed sooner.)

FLOWER CARD:

  • ALLURE TYPE(S): The Allure type(s) that the Flower card can contribute toward the purchase of a Garden Feature.
  • COST: The Coin cost of the Flower card.
  • FLOWER NAME: The common and scientific names of the flower.

Garden Features

GARDEN FEATURES: Place an Artisan pawn on the Garden Features location to purchase 1 face-up Garden Feature. The purchase price of a Garden Feature is determined by the number and type of Allure symbols in the top right corner of the Garden Feature card.

If there are any empty Garden Feature spaces prior to purchasing a Garden Feature, a player may pay 1 Coin into the Coin supply to draw 1 Garden Feature from the Garden Feature deck and place it face-up in an empty Garden Feature space. A player may repeat this action multiple times as long as there are empty Garden Feature spaces remaining.

GARDEN FEATURE CARD:

  • ALLURE TYPE: The Allure types of the Garden Feature. Used to calculate purchase cost and contribute toward your Château's total Allure.
  • NAME (ENGLISH/FRENCH): The name/type of the Garden Feature.
  • ABILITY: The Garden Feature's in-game ability.

Purchasing a Garden Feature

Garden Features can be purchased using any combination of Flower cards and Artisan cards that match all of the Allure types on the Garden Feature.

  1. FLOWER CARDS: You can spend Flower cards from your hand to contribute to the purchase of a Garden Feature if those cards have Allure types that match the symbols on the Garden Feature card:

    • If a discarded Flower card has more than 1 Allure type, and both Allure types are required by the Garden Feature, then the single Flower card can be used to pay for both of the required Allure types.
    • If, however, a Flower card with more than 1 Allure type is discarded, and only 1 of its Allure types is required by the Garden Feature, then the additional Allure type is not used and is lost.
    • Wild cards may be used as 1 of any Allure type required for the Garden Feature.
    • A player may discard any 2 Flower cards (regardless of the Allure types on those Flower cards) to count as 1 of any Allure type required for the Garden Feature.

PURCHASING EXAMPLE: The Pavilion Garden Feature costs 1 Vista, 1 Path, and 2 Architecture Allure. One possible Flower card combination to purchase the Pavilion card: the Double Pink Scotch Briar Rose contributes 1 Vista Allure as well as 1 Architecture Allure, the Wild card contributes the 1 Path Allure, and the Common Ivy contributes the second required Architecture Allure, while the remaining Architecture Allure on the Common Ivy card is lost.

  2. ARTISAN CARDS: Each of a player's Artisans may contribute their Allure type toward the purchase of a Garden Feature once per round. An Artisan's pawn does not have to be present at the Garden Feature location or on the player's Château board to use their Allure type to contribute to the purchase. The player may simply declare that they are contributing the Artisan's Allure type toward the purchase when acquiring the Garden Feature. Tilt the Artisan card at a 45-degree angle to show that the Artisan has contributed their Allure type toward a Garden Feature this turn.

NOTE: Artisan Allure types do not count toward your Château's total Allure.

ARTISAN EXAMPLE: The Pavilion Garden Feature costs 1 Vista, 1 Path, and 2 Architecture Allure. You could use your 1 Flower card that contributes 2 Architecture Allure types, plus your Landscaper Artisan who contributes 1 Path Allure type and your Painter Artisan who contributes 1 Vista Allure type to purchase the Pavilion Garden Feature.

UPDATE ALLURE TRACKER: Once the purchase requirements have been paid, place the Garden Feature card in your play area. Move the matching Allure tokens on your Château board up by 1 space on the Allure tracker for each matching Allure type symbol on the purchased Garden Feature card.

ALLURE TRACKER EXAMPLE: The Pavilion Garden Feature has 1 Vista Allure type, 1 Path Allure type, and 2 Architecture Allure types. You would increase the value of your Vista Allure token by 1, the value of your Path Allure token by 1, and the value of your Architecture Allure token by 2.

TIP: Grouping or stacking your Garden Feature cards by their ability type is a helpful way to keep track of which abilities activate at what time.

Garden Feature Ability Types

Each Garden Feature will have 1 of 4 ability types that are resolved by following the instructions on the card when the trigger condition is met.

  • WHEN ACQUIRED: Resolve the ability text immediately when you purchase the Garden Feature card.
  • WHEN VISITED: This effect is resolved each round during the Garden Party step when you may receive a Visitor.
  • END OF ROUND: This effect is resolved each round during the End of Round step.
  • GAME END: This effect is resolved at the end of the game, during scoring.

Artisan Guild

(new hire 8 coins, rehire 4 coins)

ARTISAN GUILD: Place an Artisan pawn on the Artisan Guild location to hire 1 additional Artisan or to draw a new Artisan card to replace an existing Artisan.

HIRING A NEW ARTISAN: Pay 8 Coins into the supply and draw an Artisan card from the top of the Artisan deck. Place the Artisan card in an empty Artisan space on your Château board. Take 1 pawn from the side of your Château board and place it in the empty pawn space above your new Artisan card. You may start using the new Artisan on your next turn this round.

REPLACING AN ARTISAN: Pay 4 Coins into the supply and draw an Artisan card from the top of the Artisan deck. You may choose to keep the new Artisan card or discard it if you do not want to keep it. If you choose to keep it, discard 1 of the Artisan cards currently on your Château board and place the newly drawn Artisan card in the space previously held by the discarded Artisan card.

TIP: Hiring more Artisans will grant you more turns each round, but you need to balance hiring Artisans with acquiring Garden Features and attracting Visitors.

Special Invitation

SPECIAL INVITATION: During the Garden Party step, Visitors will normally visit the player whose Château has the highest Allure matching the Visitor's Allure type. (See Garden Party.) Place an Artisan pawn on the Special Invitation location to invite a specific Visitor to your Garden Party or to have a Visitor become your Companion.

Only 1 pawn may be placed on each Visitor card. Visitor cards with a pawn on them cannot be discarded from the Visitor area by any ability or other effect in the game unless explicitly stated.

VISITOR CARD:

  • ALLURE TYPE(S): The Allure type that the Visitor is attracted to.
  • NAME: The fictional name of the Visitor.
  • EFFECT: The effects that are granted in the Garden Party step.

TIP: Gaining a Companion gives you a permanent Visitor and a strong advantage because their effect takes place at the end of each round.

INVITING A VISITOR: If you are tied with another player in the Allure matching a Visitor's Allure type, you can place an Artisan on the Special Invitation location to break the tie and have the Visitor visit your Château instead of theirs. Be cautious, though! If your opponent gains more of the Visitor's Allure type before the Garden Party step, the Visitor will ignore your invitation and visit your opponent's Château instead.

To invite a Visitor, take the pawn you placed on the Special Invitation location and place it on the card of the Visitor you wish to invite.

ROMANCING A COMPANION: If your Château has 5 or more of the Allure matching a Visitor's Allure type, you may romance that Visitor and have them become your Companion. To romance a Visitor, take the pawn you placed on the Special Invitation location, and place it on the Visitor card that you wish to romance. If the Visitor visits your Château during the Garden Party step, that Visitor will become your Companion and is placed next to your Character card. A Visitor who becomes a Companion is not returned to the Visitor discard pile at the end of the round and remains at your Château until the end of the game.

Each player may only have 1 Companion. Visitors who do not have an Allure type cannot become Companions.

ALLIANCES, TRADES, & BRIBES: You can buy and sell Flower cards, Garden Features, your loyalty, or anything else you like from and to other players.

Prestige and Coin

PRESTIGE: Place an Artisan pawn on the Prestige location to gain +1 Prestige. Each player may place an Artisan at this location only once per round.

COIN: Place an Artisan pawn on the Coin location to gain +2 Coins. Take the Coins from the supply and place them in your play area.

Garden Party

GARDEN PARTY: Once all players have placed all of their available Artisans, the Garden Party step begins. The face-up Visitors on the board each visit the Château of the player with the highest total Allure that matches the Visitor's Allure type and move to that player's play area. If players are tied for the most Allure of a Visitor's Allure type, that visitor is unable to choose which Garden Party to visit and will visit no one. (See Special Invitation for how to break a tie.) There is no limit to the number of Visitors a player can receive at their Garden Party.

NOTE: There are a few visitors who do not have an Allure type and will visit a player's Garden Party based on certain conditions. See the Visitor's text to determine which player they will visit. For example, Camille visits the Château with the most Flower Allure (and grants +1 Prestige and +1 Flower card to whoever she attends); Marie Catherine will visit the player with the least prestige.

VISITORS: Once all the face-up Visitor cards have been moved to the players' play areas (or left in the Visitor area in the event of a tie), each player in turn order, starting with the player with the First Player pawn, resolves the text on each of the Visitor cards in their play area (including their Companion if they have one) in any order they choose.

VISITOR EFFECTS: Follow the instructions on the Visitor's text to resolve their effect. If a Visitor instructs a player to gain +1 or more Flower cards, those Flower cards may be taken from the face-up Flower cards or drawn from the top of the Flower card deck at no cost.

"WHEN VISITED" ABILITIES: If you have a Garden Feature card with a When Visited ability, resolve the ability text at this time if applicable. Your Companion counts as a Visitor for the purpose of triggering and resolving Garden Feature abilities.

AU REVOIR: Once all players have resolved the text on the Visitor cards in their play area, move all Visitor cards in all players' play areas (except Companions) and those left in the Visitor area on the board to the Visitor discard pile.

TIP: Some Garden Feature cards have a "When Visited" ability that allows a player to romance a Companion for fewer Allure.

Garden Party Example

Aurora currently has 1 Architecture Allure, 2 Path Allure, and 3 Flower Allure, as shown on the Allure tracker portion of her Château board. James has 1 Architecture Allure, 3 Water Allure, and 4 Vista Allure, shown on his Allure tracker. The Visitor cards for this round are Camille, André, and Louise Marie Madeleine. Camille has the Flower Allure type and will visit Aurora, whose Château has the most Flower Allure. Louise Marie Madeleine has the Vista Allure type and will visit James, whose Château has the most Vista Allure. André has the Architecture Allure type, but Aurora and James are tied in Architecture Allure, so André will attend no one's Party and remains in the Visitor area.

Since Aurora has the First Player pawn, she will receive +1 Prestige and +1 Flower card due to Camille's card text. She will move her Prestige token 1 space on the Prestige tracker on the game board, and then gains 1 Flower card from the Flower Market. Once Aurora has resolved the text from her Visitor, James will resolve Louise Marie Madeleine's text and receive +2 Coins from the Coin supply.

End of Round

END OF ROUND: Once the Garden Party step has been completed, each player will resolve any End of Round effects on their Character card and Garden Features. Then all players will prepare the game board and their Château boards for the next round.

DISCARD REMAINING FACE-UP VISITORS IN THE VISITOR AREA: Move any remaining face-up Visitor cards in the Visitor area to the Visitor discard pile.

NOTE: Face-up Garden Feature cards and Flower cards are not discarded and remain on the board for the next round.

RETURN ARTISAN PAWNS TO YOUR BOARD: Retrieve your pawns from the game board and place them in the Artisan pawn spaces on your Château board.

FIRST PLAYER PAWN: Pass the First Player pawn to the next player in clockwise order.

GARDEN FEATURES WITH "END OF ROUND" ABILITIES: Starting with the player with the First Player pawn, each player in turn order resolves the ability text on any Garden Features they have with an End of Round ability.

CHARACTER ABILITIES: Starting with the player with the First Player pawn, each player in turn order resolves the ability text on their Character card.

RESET ARTISANS: Reset any Artisans who contributed to the purchase of a Garden Feature so they are oriented vertically in their spaces on players' Château boards.

CHECK FOR THE GRANDE SOIRÉE: If no player has 12 or more Prestige, the next round begins and play proceeds to the Start of Round step.

If one or more players has 12 or more Prestige, the Grande Soirée round begins. Play proceeds to the Start of Round step, but this will be the final round of the game. The game concludes at the end of the Grande Soirée round. (See Ending the Game.)

CHARACTER ABILITY EXAMPLE: Aurora checks each of her Character's abilities when it is her turn at the end of the round. Her first ability states, "At end of round, gain +1 Flower card for every 3 Flower Allure type at your Château." Her Château has 7 Flower Allure, so Aurora gains +2 Flower cards.

Her second ability states, "At end of round, gain +1 Coin for every 3 Vista Allure type at your Château." Her Château has 4 Vista Allure, so Aurora gains +1 Coin.

Her final ability states, "At end of round, gain +1 Prestige if you have 5+ Flower cards in hand." Aurora has 6 Flower cards in her hand, so she gains +1 Prestige on the Prestige tracker on the game board.

CHARACTER CARD:

  • NAME: The fictional name of the Character.
  • ABILITIES: The abilities that are activated at the end of each round.

Ending the Game

GAME END: The end of the game is triggered when any player has 12 or more Prestige. The game ends after the final round (the Grande Soirée round) has been completed.

End-of-Game Scoring

GARDEN FEATURES WITH GAME END ABILITIES: Starting with the player with the First Player pawn, each player in turn order resolves the ability text on any Garden Features they have with a Game End ability.

COINS: Each player gains +1 Prestige for every 8 Coins they have remaining in their play area.

FLOWER CARDS: Each player gains +1 Prestige for every 3 Flower cards they have remaining in their hand.

THE HOST OF THE GRANDE SOIRÉE: The player with the most Prestige is declared the Host of the Grande Soirée and wins the game! If there is a tie, the tied player with the most total Allure on their Château board wins the game. If there is still a tie, the win is shared.

END-GAME SCORING EXAMPLE: At the end of the game, James has 14 Prestige. He has 3 Garden Features, each with Game End abilities, and resolves them one at a time:

The first Garden Feature's ability states, "If you have 2 or more of each Allure type, gain +3 Prestige." James' Château does have 2 or more Path Allure, Vista Allure, Flower Allure, and Architecture Allure, but his Château only has 1 Water Allure. As such, James does not gain the bonus from this ability.

The second Garden Feature's ability states, "+1 Prestige for every 3 Flower Allure on your Garden Features." James' Château has 4 Flower Allure, so he gains +1 Prestige on the Prestige tracker, bringing his total to 15 Prestige.

The third Garden Feature's ability states, "If you have 4+ Flower Allure, gain +2 Prestige." Again, James' Château has 4 Flower Allure, so the ability activates, and he gains +2 Prestige on the Prestige tracker, bringing his total to 17 Prestige.

Finally, James counts his remaining Coins and Flower cards. He has 10 Coins remaining in his play area so he gains +1 Prestige, bringing his total to 18 Prestige. He has 6 Flower cards remaining in his hand, so he gains +2 Prestige, bringing his total to 20 Prestige.

With a final score of 20 Prestige, James checks his score against Aurora, who has 19 Prestige. Since James has the highest total Prestige, he is declared the Host of the Grande Soirée and wins the game!

Solo Mode

When you play the La Fleur solo mode, you compete against another of the Character cards in the game as your opponent. They will gain Flower cards and Coins and move their Allure tokens as described below. Any rules not referenced here remain the same as in the normal 2-player game.

Set up the game board and your play area for a 2-player game. To the side, set up a Château board and Allure tokens for your opponent. Perform the following additional setup:

CHARACTER CARDS: Shuffle Characters Mademoiselle Niwa, Marie-Amélie, Louise-Marie, and Captain George, then randomly select 1 to play against. You will only need this card and their starting resources (more on this in a moment) to play.

EVENT CARDS: Remove the following Event cards (indicated by a special symbol on the cards): La Seine, On the Terrace, Goats, Grand Château, and Hot Air Balloon Voyage.

VISITOR CARDS: Remove the following Visitor cards (indicated by a special symbol on the cards): Kai, and Catherine.

GARDEN FEATURE CARD: Remove the following Garden Feature card (indicated by a special symbol on the card): Pergola.

TURNS: You always play first in the first round, then your opponent. (Remember to rotate the First Player pawn each round to alternate who goes first between you and your opponent.) Place all your Artisans on your turn, 1 at a time, rather than taking turns with your opponent.

On their turn, your opponent acts in the following manner:

  1. Discard the rightmost Flower card to the Flower discard pile.
  2. Take the Garden Feature card from the top of the deck and place it in front of your opponent. Score this at the appropriate time, if applicable (note that rewards related to Companions, Garden Features, or Artisans will never score).
  3. Take cards from the top of the Flower deck equal to the number of Visitors present in the Visitor area and earn Allure according to the Allure types on the cards. (For each Wild card, gain the Allure type that appears most frequently among the Visitors. If tied, choose the one that was displayed first. If none, your opponent doesn't gain any Allure from the Wild card.) Discard these to the Flower discard pile in the same order drawn (first drawn is first discarded, etc.) after scoring them on your opponent's Allure tracker.
  4. If you are playing against the hardest opponent, note that they also gain the Allure shown on the first 3 Visitors displayed (or 2 if only 2 Visitors are displayed).

ENDING A ROUND AND STARTING THE NEXT ROUND: At the end of the round, your opponent will score Prestige, Flower cards, and Coins from the Visitors and their own Character abilities, just as you or another opponent would. They will also score any End of Round or When Visited Garden Feature cards if applicable. Score their points on the Prestige tracker and adjust the number of Visitors received each round, just as you would in a multiplayer game. To start the next round, slide all Garden Feature cards down and slide all Flower cards to the right, then fill in their respective empty spots. Your opponent will keep all Flower cards earned through Visitor and Character rewards face-down. They will never collect Artisan cards.

NOTE FOR EVENTS AND VISITORS: Your opponent will always take the action (such as spending Coins or Flowers to gain Prestige) offered by Event and Visitor cards if they are able to. Some Events won't apply to your opponent (but you can still take advantage of them!). For Notre Dame de Paris, your opponent will always take 1 Prestige.

GAME END: Once 1 player reaches 12 or more Prestige at the end of a round, the final round is played. At the end of the game, add your opponent's bonuses from Flower cards (1 Prestige per 3 Flower cards) and Coins (1 Prestige per 8 coins) to get their final Prestige score. If your Prestige score is higher, you win! Congratulations! You might be ready for a higher difficulty or the challenges (see below).

Solo Difficulties & Challenges

SOLO DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Choose your difficulty level, and set up/play accordingly:

Easier: Opponent starts with nothing on Allure track, 3 Coins, and 3 Flower cards.

Starting Level (normal - used for challenges): Opponent starts with 3 Coins and 3 Flower cards. Each round, including the first round, opponent gains 1 Allure from the Allure type that appears most frequently among the Visitors (if tied, choose the first to appear; draw additional Visitors to get an Allure type if none are present and then place any extra Visitors on the bottom of the deck).

Harder: Opponent starts with 3 Coins, 3 Flower cards, and 1 Allure of each on their Allure track. Each round, including the first round, opponent gains 1 Allure from the Allure type that appears most frequently among the Visitors (if tied, choose the first to appear; draw additional Visitors to get an Allure type if none are present and then place any extra Visitors on the bottom of the Visitor deck).

Hardest: Opponent starts with no Allure, 3 Coins, 3 Flower cards. Every round, opponent also gains 1 Allure from each of the first 3 Visitors' (or 2 Visitors' if only 2 Visitors are present) Allure type. If no Allure type is present, your opponent doesn't gain Allure from this Visitor.

SOLO CHALLENGES: For an even greater challenge, try to complete each of these scenarios, in order:

  1. Win with 20+ Prestige.
  2. Win with 10+ Coins at the end of the game.
  3. Win and be the player to trigger the final round.
  4. Win with 2 Allure types at 10+.
  5. Win with all your Allure types at 5+.
  6. Win with 6 or fewer Garden Features at the end of the game.
  7. Win with 7+ Flower cards in your hand at the end of the game.
  8. Win with 30+ Prestige.
  9. Win with only 2 Artisans at the end of the game.
  10. Win without ever activating your Character's abilities.

A Note from the Designers

Is this game historically accurate? La Fleur is a work of fiction. Most of the art throughout the game is historical art from the Rococo period. However, the characters' and visitors' names and stories, the events, and all other content in the game have been created from our whimsy and imagination. Any historical inaccuracies in the game are due to the limitations of sourcing art from the 18th century, and we do not have any association with or connection to the actual people or places whose likenesses are represented in said art. Flower card common and scientific names are as accurate as possible given the evolving understanding of botany in the time period and inconsistencies or artistic license taken when the original artist captured their likenesses.
