Components
- 30 red attack cards
- 30 blue block cards
- 20 life tokens
Objective
The players are Kung Fu masters trying to deal damage to their opponent. Cards are used to attack or to defend. Some cards will provide special powers to players. The player who is first to knock down his opponent wins the game.
Set Up
- Sort the cards by colour. Shuffle both decks separately and place them face down in the middle of the table.
- Both players draw three cards from each deck.
- Decide who will be the start player. This initiative player will be the attacker in the first round.
- Each player places 10 life tokens in front of him.
Game Sequence
The game is played in rounds. Each round the player with the initiative will be the attacker. The other player will be the defender. A round consists of four phases:
A. Change of Initiative (optional)
The player currently having the initiative may voluntary decide to change the initiative. If he decides to do this, the other player is obliged to become the attacker for this round. He may voluntary decide to change the initiative again and so on.
Note: You may change the initiative even if you gained it the previous round by winning a battle as a defender or when the cards "Drunken Master" or "Bridge of Heaven" have been played.
If the (new) attacker doesn't have at least one attack card in his hand, the initiative changes again.
Important: Each time the initiative changes during the game, the new defender immediately draws three cards. He may draw cards from one deck or from both decks. There is no hand size limit.
B. Attack
The attacker plays one red attack card from his hand in front of him. There are two ways of doing this:
- He places the card face up. OR
- He places the card face down. When this happens, the defender immediately draws one card from a deck of his choice and adds it to his hand.
C. Block
The defender plays one blue block card from his hand face up in front of him. If the defender doesn't have a block card in his hand, he can't play a card. In such a case his defence value will be 0 for this round.
Important: The defender must play a card, if he has at least one block card in his hand.
D. Outcome of the Battle
- If the value of the attack card is higher than the defence card, the attacker wins: the defender loses a number of life tokens equal to the difference between the values of both cards.
- If the value of the attack card and the defence card are equal, the attack has no effect.
- If the value of the attack card is lower than the defence card, the defender wins: the defender chooses one of these options:
- He draws a number of cards equal to the difference between the values of both cards. He may draw cards from one deck or from both decks. OR
- He takes the initiative and becomes the new attacker for the next round. His opponent draws three cards.
Important: The attacker will not lose life tokens if the defender wins a round!
In either case, all played cards (except cards with power coins) are discarded to the discard piles. Cards with power coins remain in front of the player. The coins in the bottom frame can be used for activating the special effect of a card in another round. The value of cards with power coins in front of a player will be ignored in upcoming battles.
Note: It is allowed to have multiple cards with power coins in front of you at the same time.
End of the Game
When a player loses his last life token, the game ends. His opponent wins the game. If both players lose their last life token at the same time, another battle has to be played to decide who is the real Kung Fu master.
Special Cards
Cards with Power Coins
These cards show coins in the bottom frame to activate the special effect on cards played in a later round. After using the coins on a card, the card is discarded to the appropriate discard pile.
Coins on both attack and block cards can be used to activate the special attack or block effects.
Special Effect Cards
These cards show a special effect that can be activated. When a player plays a card with a special effect, he doesn't immediately have to declare if he wants to activate this effect. When both players have played their card, the attacker is first to decide whether or not to activate the special effect of his card. Then it's the defenders turn to decide whether or not to activate the special effect.
To activate a special effect, you have to discard cards with power coins in front of you. You can't discard other cards from your hand to activate the special effect of a card. The number of coins needed to activate a card is shown on the right side of this card. You can discard multiple cards in front of you to match the requirements for the special effect of one card. If the number of coins on the discarded card(s) is higher than required, the excessive coins are lost. Each special effect can only be activated once each round.
Note: It is allowed to play a special card without activating its special effect. You don't have to pay any power coins, when you don't activate the special effect.
Overview Icons
- Attack/defence value rises (icon: 1 → 3, 3 → 6): the attack/defence value rises. Note: If the special effect isn't activated the value of the card is equal to the smaller lower number. Important: Some cards also have a special effect in the bottom frame. Both effects are activated at the same time.
- Your opponent loses a life (icon: arrow pointing from a card to a life token): when your opponent loses a life, use the special effect next to the arrow.
- You gain the number of power coins indicated on the card. The card remains in front of you and can be used to activate a special effect in an upcoming round.
- The block of your opponent is discarded without taking effect (icon: crossed-out blue block card). Note: Even if this card is played face up, your opponent must play a block card.
- The initiative changes after the outcome of the battle (icon: arrow between two cards). Note: The new attacker can still change the initiative in phase A.
- You immediately draw three cards. You may draw cards from one deck or from both decks.
- Your opponent cannot play a block next round.
- Randomly draw two cards from your opponent's hand and discard them.
- Discard one card with power coins in front of your opponent. Note: If he doesn't have any card with power coins in front of him, this effect is ignored.
- You immediately get two life tokens (icon: plus sign with two life tokens).
