Expansion Overview

In Distant Lands, you basically have 2 different "decks" of cards; your kingdom that you leave behind (stored in your box from the time you embark on the journey) and your fleet bound for Distant Lands (seafaring, persons, cargo). Your fleet will reach the distant lands and start developing your land there. By the end of Distant Lands, card 159 tells you how to join these 2 decks back together. You will purge a lot of cards in these steps. Instead of destroying the cards immediately, store all purged cards in a separate pile and purge them simultaneously in step 8 of card 159. (Appendix text, card 159.)

Keywords

The keyword definitions below are the expansion's own glossary as printed on the cards' keyword banners. Each keyword applies wherever the card notes below name it.

Purge: Purge means destroying cards, but keeping their [vp] by writing it in sticker 16 and adding that sticker to your box's score path. If you are instructed to "Purge X", that means you shuffle your deck, then you deal X cards at a time and choosing 1 friendly card to set aside to destroy at the end of the purge. When you can no longer deal X cards, you sum up all [vp] on the set aside cards, write them in sticker 16, and add that sticker to your box's score path. Then, destroy all the set aside cards.

Permanent: This card is always active and is never shuffled into the deck. It does NOT count as being "in play", though.

Time Effect: You may discard this card (unless it is permanent) and end your turn to carry out this effect.

Forced Triggered Effect: This effect must be performed at the time detailed in the effect.

Passive Effect: This effect is always active, whether you want it or not.

Activated Effect: You may discard this card to carry out this effect.

Triggered Optional Effect: This effect may be used when it is triggered. The effect itself will explain when that is, such as "End of Turn" or "When played".

Variable Production: If you produce with this card, you must choose one of the available productions. If you add a sticker production to this card, you always get that resource when producing, in addition to the variable production.

Stays in play: This card is not discarded at the end of turn. It is still discarded when you produce with it or use an activated effect or action on it. At the end of a round, all cards are discarded, even this.

Block: Put this card on top of another card, covering it. The blocked card is ignored while blocked. If this card is discarded, the blocked card is free again. If the blocking card stays in play, so does the blocked card. If the blocking card is discarded because of the end of turn, also discard the blocked card, even if it has Stays in play; that effect is not available when the card is blocked.

Undiscover: To undiscover a card means to reset it (rotating it so that the serial number is visible and at the top) and put it back into your box of undiscovered cards, at the place indicated on the serial number and the seal it is printed on.

Defeat: Some enemies can be defeated, and each such card tells you within parenthesis what happens then. Most cards will turn or be destroyed when defeated.

Destroy: Destroy the indicated card. If no other card is specified, it refers to this card.

Destroy Effect: You may destroy this card to perform the effect.

Discover: Discovering new cards means you search your box for that card and put it in your discard pile.

Reset: Rotate this card so that the serial number is in the top center of the card (as it was when discovered).

End of Expansion (Card 159)

Card 159 is the end-of-expansion card. Its printed text (checked against the card scan) is:

End of Expansion. Carefully follow these instructions in order. All purged cards are set aside and purged together in step 8 of these instructions.

  1. Purge Nin'Gari (121), all expeditions (77, 139-142), Trail Scout (15), and you may purge the Goal if you wish (66).
  2. Join all permanent cards to your main deck. Also join all negative (red) non-enemy cards.
  3. Each seafaring card may be joined to your main deck, OR purged to instead join 2 persons or 1 land / building to your main deck. Remember that Convoy counts as 2 seafaring cards. (The seafaring cards are permanently turned into trade routes connecting your lands, giving your main kingdom access to these new riches.)
  4. Destroy your crates to join additional items, inventions, and animals to your main kingdom.
  5. For each card you join, search them and see if they reference any undiscovered cards. Move all such cards from the expansion box to the back of your main box to be discovered in future expansions. Do NOT search the undiscovered cards that you move (if they reference additional cards, those are lost).
  6. Destroy any further undiscovered cards from Distant Lands.
  7. Purge all remaining cards not joined to your main deck. (Cards that cannot be destroyed are automatically joined with your kingdom instead.)
  8. Now process the purge: sum up the fame and destroy all purged cards.
  9. Add 2x sticker 13a to your score path on your game box; this counts as 2 expansions. Calculate your total fame (main deck including all joined cards and all purged fame). Write your new score next to the second sticker.

Your kingdom grows, you can be proud! What adventure awaits you now?

The appendix text for card 159 (from the card database) explains these steps in more detail, and differs slightly in wording and numbering from the printed text above. It is reproduced here for the explanations:

  • Step 1 (appendix): Purge the Nin'Gari permanent card (121). Also purge any current expeditions (77, 139, 140, 141, and 142). Note that once you finish an expedition, it becomes something else, the reward. It is then no longer an expedition and will not be purged in this step. Only expeditions you did not finish are purged here. Lastly, you may purge your goal card (66). Why would you want to do that? Because a lot of cards will be purged in this end step of Distant Lands. If you purge them now, they will count all cards you currently have (not the cards in your kingdom that you left behind). If you do NOT purge it now, you will count everything that gets joined to your kingdom, but NOT the cards you purge in these steps. For example: If you selected the Just Like Home side of the goal, you get fame for each furniture. However, it may be the case that you don't have enough crates to bring that furniture back home. In that case, you might want to purge the goal card now that it gives more fame, than bringing the goal back home without the furniture.
  • Step 2 (appendix): Join all the permanent cards with your main deck. Corner Case: This includes Fiddler's Green from the Adventures expansion, it will not be active for the rest of this purge and cannot be used to score fame for seafaring cards purged in later steps.
  • Step 3 (appendix): By default, the only cards you will join from this adventure with your main deck are the seafaring cards. If you want to join other cards, you must pay by purging seafaring cards instead. For each seafaring card you purge, you may instead join 2 persons OR 1 land / building. Decide now how many of these cards you want to join.
  • Step 4 (appendix): To join items / inventions / animals, you must instead have crates (for example 87). Make your selection now. Any unjoined items / inventions / animals will be purged.
  • Step 5 (appendix): For each card you join, search them for references to further cards. If you find a reference to another card, add that card to the back of your box, after your other undiscovered cards. They may be discovered later through these references. However, those cards may themselves have further references, but such references are NOT added to your discoverable cards. They will never be found.
  • Step 6 (appendix): Destroy all remaining cards in your Distant Lands box. Those are cards you did not discover and have no means of discovering anymore.
  • Step 7 (appendix): All cards that are not joined to your main kingdom are added to the purge. This includes all persons, lands, buildings, items, inventions, animals, and any other cards that you did not manage to join. Note that since they are purged, you will still be getting their fame, even if you cannot bring the actual cards home.

Print Changes (Version 1.1)

The publisher's change log for Distant Lands lists these print changes. They apply to the printed cards in the version 1.1 set.

  • Added a skull icon in the keyword banner of all negative cards. Check both fronts and backs, as many cards are negative on both sides. Affected cards: 24, 26, 28, 31, 32, 33, 34, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 54, 70, 73, 81, 107, 108, 109, 110, 112, 113, 114, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 157.
  • Card 0 (back): purge 6 instead of purge 7.
  • Card 45 (back): Blood Curse reworded as in the base game's version: "When you advance, play 2 additional cards."
  • Card 159: refers to seafaring instead of seafaring cards, since convoy counts as 2 seafaring but does not count as 2 cards. Added a parenthesis about Fiddler's Green.
  • Added version number (1.1) to the box.
  • Box purge info changed to purge 6 instead of purge 7.

Card Notes

Printed rules text and keyword banners for each Distant Lands card, cards 0 to 159, in card-number order. Card 13

The card will turn when you sail away, and then you will only be able to use as many resources as you stored up. Note that this card is different on stage 2 than the other cargo cards: you can only use as many as you have persons in play. It kinda makes sense...
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Activated Effect.
  • Stage 4: Note that you can only mark as many as you have persons in play. Keywords: Activated Effect, Destroy.

Card 14

  • Card text: Hurry up, you're running out of time!

  • Stage 2: (effect is icon-only; not in the text database)
  • Stage 3: (effect is icon-only; not in the text database)

Card 15

  • Card text: The red arrows at the top of this card means that when you discover it, you must choose which of its 2 sides should be face up (the serial number must be at the top of this card, whichever side you choose). Choose wisely, since you cannot change this later. This is a tough choice. The Captain is a seafaring card, so he won't take up any precious space for persons on the journey, and his effect is costly but amazing. The Trail Scout, on the other hand, will let you embark on expeditions, reaching parts of the Distant Lands that you may not get to otherwise...
  • Stage 1: Note that this card still has to be in play to use his effect. The "at any time" phrase only refers to the timing of the effect, not that he can use it wherever he is. Keywords: Triggered Optional Effect, Variable Production.
  • Stage 4: With his sticker on, this card will let you discover 1 of 4 expeditions. Leads to: This card leads to this , this , this and this . Keywords: Variable Production.

Card 16

  • Card text: This is a card from the Distant Lands expansion.
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Discover.

Card 17

  • Card text: The red arrows at the top of this card means that when you discover it, you must choose which of its 2 sides should be face up (the serial number must be at the top of this card, whichever side you choose). Choose wisely, since you cannot change this later. A knight with might in his own right, or a diplomat depending on resources from other cards to use his skills?
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Activated Effect.
  • Stage 4: (effect is icon-only; not in the text database)

Card 18

  • Card text: The red arrows at the top of this card means that when you discover it, you must choose which of its 2 sides should be face up (the serial number must be at the top of this card, whichever side you choose). Choose wisely, since you cannot change this later. The Royal Ship lets you bring one more person (which might make all the difference), but the Cargo Ship will make sure you have your resources at the ready.
  • Stage 1: This passive effect applies when you make up your deck for the journey, even if this card is technically not "in play" at that time. For the owner of this ship, rules are more like actual guidelines... Note that this effect only applies to the journey TO the Distant Lands, you cannot use this effect on the way back. Keywords: Passive Effect.
  • Stage 4: Note that this effect is triggered when the card is played, and this card itself is not discarded when performing it. Keywords: Triggered Optional Effect.

Card 19

  • Card text: Well, you're going on this trip, whether you like it or not!
  • Stage 1: Note that if you do not have 4 ships, you MUST upgrade until you do (the keyword "seafaring" does not count, the cards must have the "ship" keyword). If you have no cards left in your deck with production, you can upgrade without destroying further cards, but you can ONLY upgrade cards that turn into ships, and you have to stop when you have 4 ships. Keywords: Destroy.

Card 20

  • Card text: It's time to set sail!
  • Stage 1: (effect is icon-only; not in the text database)
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Discover.

Card 21

  • Card text: This is a track card, letting you spend your seafaring cards to gain fame . End your turn by spending an increasing amount of seafaring cards to cross out the boxes from left to right. You must take them in order, and only one per turn (unless you use an effect that prevents your turn from ending).
  • Stage 1: NOTE: Although this card signifies seafaring cards , it actually counts the number of seafaring keywords. If you have Convoy ( 83 / 86 ), it counts as 2 seafaring. In future editions, we will most likely remove the "cards" signifier and only write "discard seafaring". Keywords: Permanent, Time Effect.

Card 22

  • Card text: If you plan well, you'll be well prepared. It's that simple!
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Time Effect.
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Passive Effect, Destroy.

Card 23

  • Card text: Nothing builds friendship like enduring hardships together.
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Passive Effect.
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Passive Effect.

Card 24

  • Card text: You can't hide from this heat...
  • Stage 1: Note that cards played at the start of your turn (4 cards) and when you advance (2 cards) are played simultaneously, so if more than 1 person is played at a time, you choose which one is considered the first person, even if it was the last of the cards played. It cannot use any effects, not even " When played" effects. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Permanent.
  • Stage 4: If you gain several different resources from the same effect/card, you choose which one is considered the first. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Time Effect, Destroy, Permanent.

Card 25

  • Card text: The red arrows at the top of this card means that when you discover it, you must choose which of its 2 sides should be face up (the serial number must be at the top of this card, whichever side you choose). Choose wisely, since you cannot change this later.
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Time Effect.
  • Stage 4: Note that if you use this card's effect, you discard this card, and mark the other card, but you do not discard the other card, meaning you can use it at another time. Keywords: Activated Effect.

Card 26

  • Card text: Everything is moving. Even your bowels... But at some point, you'll get used to it.
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect.
  • Stage 4: This cards effect does not just mean that persons cannot produce; it means they don't have any production at all, so other cards that might make use of their production are also hindered, and persons cannot be discarded to produce. Keywords: Passive Effect, Activated Effect, Destroy.

Card 27

  • Card text: You forgot you had this list, but it seems you did let an extra person accompany you on this journey. You're not sure if it was the Adventurer you let on board, or the Madman who swore he was able to navigate any water you might want to cross. They both have their benefits...
  • Stage 1: This card has two upgrade possibilities. Look through the card's stages to make an informed decision!
  • Stage 2: (effect is icon-only; not in the text database)
  • Stage 3: Keywords: Activated Effect.
  • Stage 4: This card stays in play, but if you use her effect she is (of course) discarded. If you do use it, you discard the top card of your deck to produce with it, use a effect OR use a effect on that card as normal. If you use a effect, your turn ends, just like normal. Keywords: Passive Effect, Activated Effect, Time Effect.

Card 28

  • Card text: You better do some maintainance on your ships, or you just might lose them...
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Time Effect, Forced Triggered Effect, Destroy.
  • Stage 4: Note that this card destroys a card with the keyword "Ship". not just a seafaring card. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Destroy.

Card 29

  • Card text: This boy you did not let on board. Well, might as well put him to use! So... brains or legs?
  • Stage 1: This card has two upgrade possibilities. Look through the card's stages to make an informed decision!
  • Stage 2: Oh, a Disciple!
  • Stage 3: Keywords: Triggered Optional Effect.
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Activated Effect.

Card 30

  • Card text: More freeloaders! You definitely did NOT let these on board...
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Discover.

  • Stage 1: Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Time Effect.
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Time Effect, Destroy.

Card 35

  • Card text: "Well, fancy meeting you here! We might have what you need (at the right price, of course). But we have to be quick and get on our way..."
  • Stage 1: Leads to: This card leads to this , this and this . Keywords: Time Effect, Discover, Forced Triggered Effect, Destroy, Permanent.
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Activated Effect.

Card 38

  • Card text: Maintainance!!
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Time Effect, Forced Triggered Effect, Destroy.
  • Stage 4: Note that this card destroys a card with the keyword "Ship". not just a seafaring card. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Destroy.

Card 39

  • Card text: Well, it was bound to happen to someone...
  • Stage 1: Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Block, Stays in play, Time Effect.

Card 45

  • Card text: The red arrows at the top of this card means that when you discover it, you must choose which of its 2 sides should be face up (the serial number must be at the top of this card, whichever side you choose). Choose wisely, since you cannot change this later.
  • Stage 1: Note that when you produce with cards, you do so with 1 card at a time. So if you use 3 cards to produce 1 each, you have to discard 3 friendly cards in play. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect.
  • Stage 4: Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect.

Card 46

  • Card text: They don't seem as keen on you leaving them as you are...
  • Stage 1: Immediately when discovering this card, discover the 3 pirates AND SHUFFLE THEM INTO YOUR DECK. You have 1 round to get away before the ship's cannons are alongside you... Leads to: This card leads to this , this and this . Keywords: Permanent, Forced Triggered Effect, Discover, Time Effect, Destroy.
  • Stage 4: Note that the first effect happens at the end of each turn, not round. You have to spend , it is not enough to have cards in play with -symbols on them. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Destroy.

Card 47

  • Card text: You can now guess the fate of the sailors that have disappeared... The maelstrom will limit your options on your turns, but if you use your ships well, you might just make it through.
  • Stage 1: Note that this cards' effect does not just apply to Advancing; it also hinders playing cards from your deck or your discard pile. Keywords: Forced Triggered Effect, Passive Effect, Permanent.

Card 159

  • Card text: See below for clarifications on the 2 sides of this card. Completing another epic chapter in your kingdom's story. What will be next?
  • Stage 1: In Distant Lands, you basically have 2 different "decks" of cards; your kingdom that you leave behind (stored in your box from the time you embark on the journey) and your fleet bound for Distant Lands (seafaring, persons, cargo). Your fleet will reach the distant lands and start developing your land there. By the end of Distant Lands, this card tells you how to join these 2 decks back together. You will purge a lot of cards in these steps. Instead of destroying the cards immediately, store all purged cards in a separate pile and purge them simultaneously in step 8. 1) Purge the Nin'Gari permanent card ( 121 ). Also purge any current expeditions ( 77 , 139 , 140 , 141 , and 142 ). Note that once you finish an expedition, it becomes something else, the reward. It is then no longer an expedition and will not be purged in this step. Only expeditions you did not finish are purged here. Lastly, you may purge your goal card ( 66 ). For example: If you selected the Just Like Home side of the goal, you get fame for each furniture . However, it may be the case that you don't have enough crates to bring that furniture back home. In that case, you might want to purge the goal card now that it gives more fame, than bringing the goal back home without the furniture. 2) Join all the permanent cards with your main deck. Corner Case This includes Fiddler's Green from the Adventures expansion, it will not be active for the rest of this purge and cannot be used to score fame for seafaring cards purged in later steps. 3) By default, the only cards you will join from this adventure with your main deck are the seafaring cards. If you want to join other cards, you must pay by purging seafaring cards instead. For each seafaring card you purge, you may instead join 2 persons OR 1 land / building. Decide now how many of these cards you want to join. 4) To join items / inventions / animals, you must instead have crates (for example 87 ). Make your selection now. Any unjoined items / inventions / animals will be purged. Keywords: Purge, Destroy Effect.
  • Stage 4: 5) For each card you join, search them for references to further cards. If you find a reference to another card, add that card to the back of your box, after your other undiscovered cards. They may be discovered later through these references. However, those cards may themselves have further references, but such references are NOT added to your discoverable cards. They will never be found. 6) Destroy all remaining cards in your Distant Lands box. Those are cards you did not discover and have no means of discovering anymore. 7) All cards that are not joined to your main kingdom are added to the purge. This includes all persons, lands, buildings, items, inventions, animals, and any other cards that you did not manage to join. Note that since they are purged, you will still be getting their fame, even if you cannot bring the actual cards home. 8) Now process the purge. Sum up all fame on all the cards that are about to be purged. Write that number in sticker 16, and add that sticker to the side of your box (under "Purged Fame"). Note that this purge is not affected by cards in your main kingdom, since they are not active right now. For example, if you have the Library from Ambitions, it doesn't count these cards. 9) Now that you only have 1 deck again, because you have joined the 2 decks together, it is time to calculate your new score! Count the fame on all your cards, including both the cards you have joined from the Distant Lands, and the cards that have been stored in your box throughout this expansion. Add the 2 13a stickers to your score path: This expansion counts as 2 expansions played after each other. You don't need to write down a score after the first one, but if you want to do so, we suggest writing you halfway score there.

Transcription Notes

This rulebook is transcribed from the publisher's card database for Distant Lands, not from a rules PDF, because none is published. Its scope and known gaps:

  • Card titles are not in the text database, so cards are listed by number only. The card scans carry titles and printed text the database does not; for example, card 1 is printed as "Coastline" (front) and "Coral Reef" (back), card 21 as "Fleet Maneuvers", and card 46 as "Pirate Ship".
  • Effects and costs printed as symbols (production, resource, mark, cross-mark, fame and discovery symbols, and card-number references shown as icons) are not in the text. Where a card's effect is icon-only, the note says so. The keyword names are included wherever the database lists them.
  • Card-number references printed as symbols appear as "this" in the database, so "Leads to: this" means the card's discovery targets are printed as icons and are not transcribed.
  • The database's appendix wording for some cards does not match the printed card. Card 46 is the spot-checked example: the printed Stage 1 reads "When revealed, discover and shuffle 3 pirates into your deck" with a Flee effect and an End of Round effect, while the database paraphrases this differently. Where printed text and database text differ, the printed card governs; only the cards checked against scans are confirmed this way.
  • Spot-checked against the card scans: the Welcome sheet (card 0 front), card 1 front, card 21 front, card 46 front, and card 159 front and back. The remaining 150-plus cards are transcribed from the database only and have not been checked against their scans.
