Which rules version should I use, and are 1.5 expansions compatible with the 1.6 core?

Use the current version (1.5, then 1.6): 1.6 mainly replaces cards with updated versions, 1.5 should always be incorporated as its instructions say, and 1.5 expansions work with the 1.6 core (level 3+ monsters have Indomitable, and level 3 expansion quarries give Black Lichen). Core 1.6 does not update the expansions' errata: you need either the old expansions plus the Legendary Card Pack or the reprinted ones. A mid-campaign upgrade to 1.5 is workable, though Saviors need a house rule.
