The hunting party is always four survivors, so fewer than four players means each controls several (two players control two each). The designer, in 2012, said the game is built around four survivors, that testing with up to six players raised no scaling issues beyond longer play, and that solo can feel like solitaire. It can be played solo, with one player running everyone.
