Do milestone story events trigger immediately or only at the Check Milestones step?

Usually immediately, as soon as the condition is met; the Check Milestones step is a reminder not to miss one. A few can wait, such as the Hooded Knight's innovation trigger when the fifth innovation was gained outside the settlement phase. Deaths from childbirth are recorded at once rather than at the next check.
