What gear do the starting survivors have, and when do they gain survival after the First Story?
Each of the four starting survivors begins with 1 Cloth armor and 1 Founding Stone weapon. Returning survivors gain +1 survival when the settlement is named, capped by the Survival Limit, and this happens before Language raises the limit later in the First Story. If the whole party dies in the prologue, their gear is not lost: it returns to the settlement.
