Archiving removes the card from play and returns it to the game box. For cards that live in decks (resources, disorders, fighting arts, innovation consequences) the box is their deck, so they can be drawn or gained again. Anything not recorded on the settlement or survivor sheet is lost for that campaign, so archived gear leaves the settlement but can be crafted again, and the discard pile is separate: it holds cards out of the active draw.
